Myth Clash II: Ovid vs. Euripides for Medea, a sadness of love As one of the most well known ancient Roman love poets, Ovid has demonstrated bountiful talents within his writing. When reading myths from his book titled Metamorphoses, you gain an enlightening insight of how he viewed mythology. To Ovid, love was the origin of everything. Therefore, it should not come as a surprise that most of his poems relate to the theme of love. However, not all poets are the same and every re-telling of a myth has its own unique perspective. In this paper I will compare and contrast the myth of Medea in Euripides Medea and Ovid’s Metamorphoses Book 7. I will then explain how Ovid’s approach to love and loss correlate to his general approach to myth as a whole. I will support my belief with evidence from Ovid’s Metamorphoses Book 14. To begin comparing Euripides Medea and Ovid’s Metamorphoses Book 7, we need to look at three components: context, characters, and themes. Both Euripides and Ovid tell the story of Jason abandoning Medea for another woman; however, they do not always share a perspective on the female protagonist’s traits, behavior, and purpose. Euripides portrays a woman who reacts to discrimination by beginning a battle to gain revenge all who harmed her, which she is prepared to follow through with even if it means resorting to the most despicable methods. Ovid, on the other hand, tells of a much less severe figure whose modest goal is only to persuade Jason to return. Despite these written differences, both of their Medea’s create trouble by acting with emotions instead of with reason, and as a result, put themselves in undesirable situations. Euripides and Ovid present two different sets of motivations for Medea's behavior wh... ... middle of paper ... ... is one example of how he used a poem to write about what the power of love can do to someone, i.e. bring someone to his or her demise. This kind of approach to myth telling is also prominent in another myth written by Ovid, which can be found in Book 14. This is the story of Dido and Aeneas. In this instinct Dido is tricked and deceived by Aeneas, when he takes advantage over her and uses her. Therefore Dido is left on her own and since her passion of love towards Aeneas was so great, she then finds herself depressed and kills herself. This action is called upon from the power of love and by killing herself she deceived others as well. Now, this is not the exact same comparison as to Medea’s story but it does depict what beholds those who have fallen deeply in love. Good reasoning and justice falls second when it comes to women’s emotions of passion and persuasion.
The depiction of the Greek and roman myths are given unique insights from different authors. The Hymn to Demeter and Ovid's Metamorphosis provide and insight to Demeter's love for her daughter, Persephone, and explores its affect on the surrounding environments. Medea and Lysistrata are two Greek literatures that depict the power which women are driven to achieve in an aim to defy gender inequality. In The Medea, Medea is battling against her husband Jason whom she hates. On the other hand, in Aristophanes' Lysistrata, the protagonist Lysistrata plotted to convince and organize the female gender to protest against the stubbornness of men. In terms of defining the purpose of these two literatures, it is apparent that Euripedes and Aristophanes created characters that demonstrate resistance against the domination of men in the society.
Virgil’s The Aeneid, to this day, remains one of the most influential epics to ever grace the merciless limitations of manuscript, inspiring, in pop culture as well as literature, an onslaught of themes, mythology, values, and the general sense of what a hero must be-or do- in order to overcome the obstacles of the gods and man. Written somewhere between 29 and 19 BC, consisting of twelve books (although never completely finished), The Aeneid takes us through the turbulent journeys and prophesied triumphs of Aeneas, a warrior and man bound by piety and destiny. Like usual, in every great epic, there are many battles: heads gashed open and gore galore; however, to say that this master piece is just for men would be atrocious, considering that Venus, Aeneas’s mother (the goddess of hunt, extremely beautiful), plays a major role in the book from beginning to end, but, although women are portrayed as a symbol of strength (most of the time, at least), one cannot ignore the invocation to the muse at the very beginning: “I sing of arms and of the man” (3). Through the wars, travels, monsters, and grief that awaits our protagonist, I feel that the relationship between Aeneas and Dido, the queen of Carthage, holds special relevance in my life, for I have loved and lost as well, but one thing may surprise you, I have seen it through the eyes of Dido, not Aeneas. Fortunately, for me, I didn’t have to sacrifice myself, but I did learn to love, relish it, and then, sadly, let it go.
The Aeneid, by Virgil, is an epic poem about dedication, love, pain, and kindness. Aeneas is Trojan that is loyal and dedicated to his country. His heroic action is shown when he carried his father on his back and his son by the hand. I chose to write about this poem because it shows how one character can change dramatically. Aeneid is a great Roman leader that is cares for the safety of his people. He turned down the love of his life to go fulfill his destiny. He was destined to be in Italy. This poem is structured the same way as modern literature. Virgil’s use of the three female characters in the story: Venus, Dido, and Juno depicts power and the decisions women encounter that can change the way they are seen by society.
The beginnings of the world are mythologically recorded by the poet Ovid, who lived from 43 BC to 17 or 18 AD. During this time period, he wrote a collection of poetry that spanned the history of Rome’s beginnings up to Julius Caesar. His poetry had political purposes, but was also well known for its codification of love affairs. While it met the standards of traditional epic poetry, the style of his couplets varied in rhythm and length, so it was labelled more ambiguously as “Roman mythological poetry.” In his largest and most famous work, The Metamorphoses covers hundreds of Roman myths. It is comprised of a series of 15 books, each with a different theme or virtue. The theme of Book 10 seemed to center around the love affairs of the gods. Each love story has an initial period of happiness, followed by a tragic event, resulting in the lovers being separated. There is a lot of sex and passion, but also a focus on mourning and sorrow. Nature also plays a large part in the lives of Ovid’s characters. By entwining nature and its animals with the human protagonists of his myths, Ovid wrote a creation epic that appealed to Medieval authors like Boccaccio, as well as writers such as Shakespeare and Dante.

The tragic play Medea is a struggle between reason and violence. Medea is deliberately portrayed as not a ‘normal woman’, but excessive in her passions. Medea is a torment to herself and to others; that is why Euripides shows her blazing her way through life leaving wreckage behind her. Euripides has presented Medea as a figure previously thought of exclusively as a male- hero. Her balance of character is a combination of the outstanding qualities of Achilles and Odysseus.
Medea’s illegitimate marriage and the betrayal of Jason drive Medea to extreme revenge. Medea chooses to act with her immortal self and commit inhumane acts of murder rather than rationalize the outcomes of her actions. Medea see’s this option as her only resort as she has been banished and has nowhere to go, “stripped of her place”. To create sympathy for Medea, Euripides plays down Medea’s supernatural powers until the end of the play. Throughout the play Medea represents all characteristics found in individual women put together, including; love, passion, betrayal and revenge. Medea’s portrayal of human flaws creates empathetic emotions from the audience. The audience commiserates with Medea’s human flaws as they recognize them in themselves. Medea plays the major role in this play as she demonstrates many behavioral and psychological patterns unlike any of the other Greek women in the play; this draws the audience’s attention to Medea for sympathy and respect.

Sophocles’ tragic play, “Oedipus the King”, or “Oedipus Rex” as it’s known by its Latin name, is the Athenian drama that revolves around the events which lead to the demise of Oedipus Rex. The King Oedipus is forced down a preordained path that throws his entire world into a spiral of tragic providence, in this trilogy of a Theban play. Sophocles assigns the tragic hero to a downfall with the impossibility of changing the written fate; perhaps the views of today’s society would feel sympathy for the predicament that Oedipus is forced into, however, the publics of ancient Greece would accept that the path laid before them was a creation of the Gods. “Oedipus the King” reflects the ancient Greek credence in the belief that a person can do nothing to avoid their destiny, an idea that contrasts with what society believes today.
