I know that life is really hard because we faced struggles during high school. And, sometimes most of the students stress and pain. We let the pain and stress to take control over us because we are weak. And there's is where and when we start to getting bad grades, being disrespectful to their parents, and teachers. Chase Mielke’s spoken word piece, “What Students Really Need to Hear”, shines many lights on the purpose of school and how students contribute to said purpose. There are a myriad of important points, although the central idea stands out above all. More specifically, the idea that the point of school is not to memorize facts, but to learn how to deal with difficult times properly. He writes, “It is your resilience in conquering the main event- adversity- that truly prepares you for life after school.” Mielke illustrates this concept using rhetorical devices such as pathos, or emotions. Simply, the author’s use of pathos emphasizes the idea that school’s ‘main event’ is to instruct students on how to keep moving in the face of seemly insurmountable harshness.
These last four years have been rough on me but luckily there have been some lessons learned through it. I have just looked forward and moved on to greater things in life. Gwendolyn Brooks’s poem, “A Speech to the Young,” is a refreshing reminder to simply stop worrying so much about negative people and to quit stressing over the future. She encourages her readers to just take life as it comes, and live in the present time. We could all use this kind of positivity that Brooks seems to be encouraging her readers to do throughout her poem. The message of this poem was clearly evident, and certainly made a motivating statement to all young adults (and regular adults too) that need to hear these wise words of wisdom. Freshman year of high school careened past my very eyes before I had the maturity to fully comprehend the knowledge and life experience that was being imparted to my young impressionable intellect. The somewhat nebulous idea of high school loomed before me, acting as both a mirage and a reality. The atmosphere itself was cramped. Every detail about the school was small, building size, classrooms, the student population. Yet in a broader sense I was overwhelmed by the enormousness of the task that lay before me. I was more concerned with surviving the first year than with anything else.
My life was a mess at the beginning. It all started in the year 2007. I was in grade 7 at that time. I used to be that boy who loved to sit with his friends play around and laugh on stupid jokes just to have fun. Almost everything changed that year nothing stayed the same again. I enjoyed my time a lot with my friends never saw that day coming. That they will all turn against me just because I refused to give them the homework on a Sunday morning. I used to give them the homework all the time. However this time it was different. The homework would have a huge effect on my final grade. I was scared that’s why I never gave them the paper. I felt that change like a wound deeply in me that really hurts I got stabbed by them for more than ten times. My friends who were my second family in school became my enemies unworthy of my trust anymore. It’s funny how the world really spins in a way that even if you get stabbed more than once you keep going on and on. I knew that they were capable of destroying anytime I gave up. I felt frustrated at first from them but I continued my way alone I gathered my strength again. What was similar to my life and Jimmy Baca life was simple determination that held us together, without determination we could face our struggles and issues and over came them. Me and Jimmy Baca wanted to prove something that was very simple which was that we both deserve to live with respect cause we deserve it, we aren’t saying that we are better than everyone else me and Jimmy Baca are saying it out loud we deserve respect that was our ultimate goal.
As discussed in class, discourse is our communication. Furthermore, author James Paul Gee of “What is Literacy” defines discourse as an “identity kit” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). Gee includes discourse as a combination of one’s thinking, acting, and language that is associated to a group of others. There are different kinds of discourses; two discourses that will be discussed in this paper are primary and secondary. Primary discourse is the “oral mode developed in the primary process of enculturation” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). The primary discourse in this paper is the first-person experience I had in high school. Secondary discourse is “developed in association with and by having access to and practice with these secondary institutions” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). School, work, and church are examples of secondary institutions. The secondary discourse in the paper is attending the University of Arkansas and writing this paper. According to Gee, “secondary discourse can serve as a meta-discourse to critique the primary discourse…” (“What is Literacy?”). Throughout this process I wanted to know if high school is destined. Was my high school experience awful or is there a sociological reasoning behind the events? With that, I have researched the social construct and applied it to my previous experiences enabling me to truly discover if high school is destined.
Life is sad, everything about life is sad, I used to think life was all gumdrops and love, but life is not gumdrops and lollipops. When we become freshmen we experience many new and exciting thing. We meet new people and form new friendships. Sometimes we get so caught up in these new experiences, and forget the important things. We forget what a true friendship should be like, or even forget that no matter how different people may seem, we are all the same on the inside. These are to very important lessons that freshmen should be reminded of before they begin their freshman year.
