When students are in their new place, they usually feel stressed for various reasons, such as new circumstance, a lot of homework, and relationships with people. Feeling stressed relates to depression, and then may cause of homesickness, so they should get rid of stress by doing physical activities. According to “How to Deal With Homesickness?”, YouTube video, 2:01, “Research has shown that exercise releases endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins can help fight anxiety and depression, which are both common side-effects of homesickness” (LIFE COACH, 2:01). Some students do exercise regularly to make feel better. Other students hang out with their friends to feel refreshed. Moreover, another way to dealing with stress is to find causes of being stressed. Every year many students pursue higher education and relocate themselves to enroll in colleges and universities around the world. Personally, many of these instances have occurred to me and affected me in becoming more accepting to live in new places. Although shifting places have had a negative impact on me, it has also given me new experiences. As an incoming college freshman student, homesickness was something I experienced first-hand and learned to cope with. Even though I am only two hours away from home, it was still hard getting used to the fact that I could not just go home whenever I wanted. In the article, “Homesickness and Adjustment in University Students”, prevention strategies were given to provide college students with coping methods. The prevention strategy that stood out most to me was initiating contacts prior to the first day of school. During some of my summer visits, I had the opportunity to meet some of my future classmates. I remained in contact with a few of them over the course of summer. When the first day finally rolled around, I felt a sense of relief knowing that I had already made some friends. In my revised response, I explained three prevention strategies that I found to be the most useful. I was able to mention the importance of self-compassion, which is ultimately in my opinion, the most important element in overcoming homesickness. I also mentioned how adjusting to college life just takes time. This seems to be how the majority of college students overcome feelings of homesickness. After reading the article, it just made me realize how many students are actually affected by homesickness. Moving to another place that one is unaccustomed of requires a person to adapt. To acclimatize oneself to a new environment, different traditions/cultures may lead up to one’s loss of identity. In my experience, when my family migrated from the Philippines to America, I was surprised with what I witnessed (from the cleanliness of the environment to the way people act and speak towards/about other people, especially to the elders). Everything was completely different that I was so scared to approach or befriend someone in fear of being made fun of or of being thought as weird for not being alike to them. Living almost 13 years of my life in the Philippines, I was raised in a very different environment. I grew up believing different beliefs and having different views, so when I relocated it was very hard for me to connect. As time passed by, I learned how to accept and be part of this new life, new beginning. But in exchange of being able to fit in and connect with the new people in my life was the person who I used to be. A part of me sometimes wishes to go back in time and be the person who I once was. Furthermore, when one relocates, his/her child(ren), younger siblings, or anyone who moved with him/her may not even get the chance to meet or get to know his/her other relatives. Stress is a state of mental or emotional tension resulting from adverse or difficult situations (Merriam-Webster). When you are in potential danger, your body responds with a “fight-or-flight” response to protect you from any harm. Although situations in life can increase stress, there are plenty of methods to diminish it. Some pros are: managing the levels of stress in your body, boosting your self-esteem, and improving learning and memory.
