I have often wondered why people went through so much time and money disposing of dead bodies. Once the person dies, I seriously doubt that they care what happens to their body. In the past, bodies have been put to rest many different ways. Cultures have a large effect on this. Some cultures would burn the body or hang them up high so the spirits could be released. Nevertheless, I have only found three legal ways to dispose of a dead body in the United States today.
Burial is the traditional way to go. The majority of our population is put six feet under in an expensive casket, just so they can rot. Burying someone almost seems rude because it allows the worms, bacteria, and other decomposers to eat away at the

Some people think that cremation is morbid and sick, but I believe that it makes good sense. By cremating the body, large land plots are not wasted and the body can not be eaten by insects. The family does not have to spend their life savings trying to pick out the fanciest casket for the deceased to rot in either. The act of sprinkling ones ashes upon a sacred place is just as sincere as burying their body. This method of disposing of a dead body seems much less painful to the family because they do not have to cope with seeing the person with out life. I believe that cremation is a very economic and logical way to rid the family of pain and still dispose of the …show more content…
This seems to be the very best method of the three. After a person is dead there is no reason to save the body when someone still living can be helped or maybe even saved by a part taken from the deceased. Selfishness should be considered in choosing a disposal process. Giving a body to science can not be selfish in any way. If looking for a cost efficient method, donating one’s body to science has got to be the cheapest way to go. Environmentalist agree that this technique is the smartest and safest manner of discarding dead bodies, and scientists love to have new bodies to experiment on. Overall, I deem that this procedure is what all Americans should begin
In the past four decades the cost of a funeral service has risen 1,328% (Boring) and that’s not just because Morticians wanted to out of pure greed. One must take into account that modern mortuaries are much more of a business than before. Prior to 1970, the majority of funeral homes were were independent, family run. Today about 14% of funeral homes are run by a publicly traded corporation (Boring) meaning there’s a plethora of capital involved in these businesses now. The homes are built better and by professionals rather than by individuals with some tools, the home’s are extremely more sanitary since there’s more than likely no one living in these funeral homes unlike before, and the quality of the products these services are providing is greater than before.
“In most human society's death is an extremely important cultural and social phenomenon, sometimes more important than birth” (Ohnuki-Tierney, Angrosino, & Daar et al. 1994). In the United States of America, when a body dies it is cherished, mourned over, and given respect by the ones that knew the person. It is sent to the morgue and from there the family decides how the body should be buried or cremated based on...
Death comes to all in the end, shrouded in mystery, occasionally bringing with it pain, and while some may welcome its finality, others may fight it with every ounce of their strength. Humans have throughout the centuries created death rituals to bring them peace and healing after the death of a loved one.
After the death of a person the eyes are closed, so the person can finally rest in peace. Some Jews place the body of the deceased on the floor immediately after death. This is done to cool the body to slow the deterioration of the body and also fulfill the biblical prognostication "for dust thou art and unto dust shalt thou return"(Genesis 3:19). A candle is then lit and placed near the corpse head to show respect to the soul that departed. In the past twenty-six candles were light around the body; twenty-six is the Jewish numerical number meaning "God." Today this is done only to show respect to the dead. Jewish people treat a close family members death similar to Americans. Relatives and friends of the deceased feel great distress, sorrow, and pain.
As all humans are well aware death is inevitable. Human cultures and death have always been closely knit together. Varying between location, time, and struggles you may notice societies adopt and update their cultures and as these cultures change it sometimes if reflected by how a civilization honors their dead. In fact, the way a civilization’s way of honoring their dead is very important to historians and archeologists as they help put together pieces regarding religion, the civilizations stance on mortality, art style and tell stories that can further clarify history. The topic of death is an extremely broad subject having many confusing and sometimes hard to notice difference that are hard to distinguish. An example of this might be Greek
Did you know that there is a such thing as burying without embalming? This is referred to as natural or green burial. Green Burial is typically done in the UK. When green burial is done, the body is put directly in a body bag and buried, without using any chemicals. This is done so that the body can recycle naturally. Green Burial should not be allowed because it causes foul odors, has the potential of spreading diseases, and can attract animals to the body due to the smells. While people may have religious or personal reasons for advocating burying without embalming, the health and sanitary risks are too great to ignore.
Death is something that no one wants to go through or have to deal with, especially concerning the loss of loved ones. Unfortunately, it is not possible to go through life without experiencing this loss. Throughout the past several decades, the way that we view death and the funeral industry has changed significantly. Recently, it has seemed much more apparent that funeral industries are using death as a means of getting rich. But why?
Ancient Egyptians had many beliefs and rituals about the burial process of the dead. It was important to them that the body was ready for the afterlife. They believed ‘’death was only a temporary interruption or pause to life.’’cite text.
Although ethics is concerned with the difference between right and wrong, what is right and what is wrong when it comes to issues of death and dying vary widely from culture to culture, religion to religion, and even individual to individual. There are three general sets of ethical issues that need to be faced when considering matters of death and dying: Defining life and the cessation thereof; determining the quality of life that the individual experiences, and; deciding how the body should be treated after death. For many people, the parameters of ethical behavior are defined by their religious beliefs. No matter how decisions of death are dying are informed, however, such questions are best faced when the individual is still mentally sound
Euthanasia has been an ongoing debate for many years. Everyone has an opinion on why euthanasia should or should not be allowed but, it is as simple as having the choice to die with dignity. If a patient wishes to end his or her life before a disease takes away their quality of life, then the patient should have the option of euthanasia. Although, American society considers euthanasia to be morally wrong euthanasia should be considered respecting a loved one’s wishes. To understand euthanasia, it is important to know the rights humans have at the end of life, that there are acts of passive euthanasia already in practice, and the beneficial aspects.
I have chosen to plan my own funeral and post mortem arrangements with the minimal budget of $2,700. Since I have such limited funds to work I have decided to cremate my body instead of the more traditional burial in a coffin. Cremation is a cheaper alternative to an earth burial, more environmentally friendly, and increasing in popularity throughout the United States. This is a practical choice especially for someone with a small budged, burials in this day and seems more unnecessary and obsolete in a society of growing population and
Before the burial, the body is fully cleaned and covered in a plain shroud, for that a poor person should not have less honor than the rich (Lamm, 2000). Common among many Religions but in the Jewish faith the cleanliness of the body is highly emphasized, when the body has been removed from the house everything must be cleansed to restore them to purity (Kraemer, 2005). Judaism teaches that the body should be buried intact. This would deem cremation prohibited and autopsy is allowed only if the body is being used for medical benefit and saving the life of another (Ross, 1998). In some societies, a volunteer support group known as Cherva Kadisha help arrange the funeral, and attend to the other needs for the family mourning (Mintz, 2015). A Jewish funeral should be done as quickly as possible, it is often held at gravesite with the family of the deceased throwing dirt on the lowered coffin, and flowers are not present during the funeral because they symbolize life (Ross, 1998). During the funeral, the casket should not be open, exposing the body is considered disrespectful because it allows family and friends see the body in its helpless state (Lamm, 2000). Women are also encouraged to cry during the burial, to give the expression of sadness and to evoke remorse of those participating (Kraemer, 2005). This practice is used to express grief and a sense of closure when witnessing the burial of the deceased. This is a means of giving individuals a safe environment for them to express their
There comes to that point in life where you have to sign a will and figure where things are going and to be cremated or buried. Over the time I have noticed different opinions people have on what to choose. Me personally would choose cremation. When I was 7 I remember hearing my uncle talking about dying and how he wanted to be buried. And on the other hand, my mother wanted to be cremated. I listen to there opinions on why they choose it. My uncle said its traditional and wanted to be laid by the family. Now my mother said she was to be cremated so they I could spread her ashes over the Grand canyon. She felt as though her spirit would be free that way and not trapped in a box under the ground.
Most of the time it is due to the person’s own request but sometimes it is done when the person cannot speak for itself and the family members have to decide for them. Euthanasia is really not a bad thing and it should be legalized in my opinion.
burial, instead they will be left laying on the ground to rot and to be eaten by the animals. This
