When the lab began, we went outside and collected our oven mitts. Then, we were handed our bag of supplies. Students were allowed to take the twist tie off without our oven mitts on, but as soon as we finished, we had to put them on. I then took out my paper and bamboo sticks. I attempted to stick them into the dirt, but the soil was too hard. I tried to tie the sticks together with a twist tie at the top, but the oven mitts prevented me from doing that.
The unknown bacterium that was handed out by the professor labeled “E19” was an irregular and raised shaped bacteria with a smooth texture and it had a white creamy color. The slant growth pattern was filiform and there was a turbid growth in the broth. After all the tests were complete and the results were compared the unknown bacterium was defined as Shigella sonnei. The results that narrowed it down the most were the gram stain, the lactose fermentation test, the citrate utilization test and the indole test. The results for each of the tests performed are listed in Table 1.1 below.
The beet Lab experiment was tested to examine bio-membranes and the amount of betacyanin extracted from the beets. The betacyanin is a reddish color because it transmits wavelengths in red color and absorbs most other colors. The membrane is composed of a phospholipid bilayer with proteins embedded in it. The phospholipid bilayer forms a barrier that is impermeable to many substances like large hydrophilic molecules. The cells of beets are red and have large vacuoles that play a big role for the reddish pigment. This experiment aimed to answer the question, “How do cell membranes work?” The hypothesis we aim to test is: Cell membranes work as a fluid mosaic bilayer of phospholipids with many embedded proteins. Mold is a member of the fungi family. Since mold is part of the fungi family, it cannot use the sun to obtain energy. This means that mold has to use other plants or animals to grow. Even though they cannot see them, there are millions of mold spores in the air. These spores settle down and start to multiply which can be done rapidly or slowly as long as it has a food source. Mold usually grows best in warm environments, but it can still grow in cold environments also. Mold can cause illness such as vomiting or feeling nauseated when it is eaten or when it smells bad.

In this experiment my lab partner and I collected an unknown sample (sample A) and performed a series of tests and analyses to determine the chemical composition of the unknown. One of our learning goals was to practice performing the basics of analyzing an unknown; this entails measuring boiling point, melting point, and noting its physical properties (color, smell, etc.) In addition to this, we also practiced reading basic spectra, looking at and interpreting test results, synthesizing derivatives of our unknown, and testing the melting point of said derivatives to help us further identify our unknown.
A. According to the facts, Smith bought a stove that was manufactured by the ABC Company. Since he bought a stove it was certainly foreseeable that that he would use the stove to cook. Smith should have known that the intended use of a stove is to cook food. There was not any heat in Smith’s kitchen which is the reason why he had the oven door wide open. However, this brings to me to the question of why didn’t he just use a miniature personal heater and place it in his kitchen? The activity that Smith was engaged in (resting his feet on the oven door) was rarely foreseeable. Moreover, resting your feet on the inside of an oven door is considered a highly dangerous and irresponsible activity. It is predictable almost to a certainty foreseeable that a possible injury could occur when someone is misusing a stove.
