In Jeremy Polk’s article, Traits of Effective Teachers, he mentions ten characteristics of effective teachers. Those ten traits are, “good prior academic performance, communication skills, creativity, professionalism, pedagogical knowledge, thorough and appropriate student evaluation and assessment, lifelong learning, personality, content area knowledge, and the ability to model concepts in their content area” (Polk, 2006). Polk understands that these are not the only traits that effective teachers will showcase, but it is the start to a list of highly important qualities (Polk, 2006).
In my twelve years of teaching experience, one thing that most of my colleagues have struggled with at some point in their career has been classroom management. Classroom management is one many keys to instructional success. Unfortunately, many have left the teaching field due to lack of knowledge of classroom management best practices.
Everyone knows that when it comes to making a difference in a child’s academic and life achievements, their teachers play a large role. A teacher’s ability to relate to their students, and teach them to achieve both socially and academically contributes to how effective they are. What does it mean to be an effective teacher? Overall there seems to be an emphasis on teacher effectiveness related to how well their students are performing on standardized testing. As teachers we know there is more to being an effective teacher then just teaching our students based on tests. This paper will identify different definitions of an effective teacher along with how to assess teachers on being effective.
Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
Knowledge of Content: My high school Algebra teacher was very knowledgeable of her content area. She could explain the rules and methods of Algebra with ease. She also knew how to make it easier for her students to understand.
One question that we are faced is what does quality teaching look like. The way in which a teacher approaches the classroom is very important to look at. It is known to us that the most important factor in the school setting is the teacher. They must be very organized and prepared and most importantly they must know the material they are teaching. A teacher should involve students and give them the chance to get out of their seat. Teachers must create lessons for different students because all students work on a different pace. There are many things which make a teacher great and they all can`t be defined.However i`ve always considered several of them essential.In my opinion a good teacher is someonewho first of all creates interest in studying,doesn`t underestimate the children,has equal expectations of siccess from everyone and last but not least likes his job.
Some of my favorite childhood memories involve teaching my stuffed animals what I had learned in my schooling. As I grew older I found myself still wanting to teach, but with children instead of stuffed animals. I have always strived to live a life of honesty, integrity and, full of passion while being compassionate, and understanding with all things. I remember my fourth grade year as if it were yesterday. My homeroom teacher, Mr.
Relates to standard one, an effective teacher knows processes and strategies that work for students to learn lessons. For instance, he/she knows how assignments work in making students understand concepts, how to communicate with students, how to vary his/her teaching style, how to speak so that students understand concepts being presented, and to offer help for students when they need it. Those were effective ways that work together in making students learn any material better. In addition, an effective teacher also knows the learning characteristics of his/her students according to their age groups. For instance, he/she knows a teenager student is more likely to be emotional compared to older ones. In West Carrollton, I observed the teacher teaching a reading and writing lesson with students who have a disability when learning to write. I realized they could not write in the correct way. I asked her because some of them spelled book, bok. She said this was ok as it was typical of 1st grade students to spell this way. This aligns with standard.
Broadly, an effective teacher does not only involve having a deep content knowledge but also organisational, management and communication skills. He/she must be able to organise instructions, provide relevant assessment and fair evaluations. In addition, an effective teacher is responsible to create a warm classroom climate to promote enthusiasm, motivation and an interactive teacher-student relationship. It also implies to be caring and understandable and above all enhance learning. An effective teacher should be able to provide effective teaching and learning process.
Being a successful teacher depends on creating a learning environment with the open exploration of ideas, a relationship in which students feel respected as well as challenged. Students should be encouraged to stretch themselves a bit beyond their level of comfort and be given an opportunity to leave every class feeling that they have overcome a new challenge successfully.
One good quality a teacher should have is, respect for the students. Each person’s ideas and opinions should be valued and not judged. They should be able to express themselves without feeling insecure. Another good quality is, having high expectations for your students. Each student should be encouraged to do their best and achieve goals that they may have never met before. Another good quality is, I believe a teacher should have is good communication skills. They should keep not only the students informed on what is going on in the class, they should definitely keep the parents informed as well. Teachers need to know how to communicate with all their students because some are at different levels than others.
