The idea of “Outliving Oneself” depends on the concepts of trauma and most importantly the self, in a situation where said trauma obliterates the self for an indefinite amount of time. Brison presents the self in three interwoven parts: the embodied self, the self as narrative, and the autonomous self. Any of these parts of self depend largely on the individual’s society, culture, and interactions with other people. The embodied self represents the self in conjunction with the physical body, which our society separates from the self, to intimate a soul or personality, and also assigns genders to certain traits. Trauma dissolves this separation of body and mind because violence brings the traumatized to face their own mortality. They have to see their body as an object because their assailant treats it as an object. Trauma is so damaging because the self cannot exert any power whatsoever; the interaction between the assailant and the victim, essentially a social situation, robs the victim of a voice, because the assailant ignores it, a personality, because it is of no consequence to the assailant, and a self, because the assailant uses the body as an object, and the body plays a more central role in the interaction than the self does. Brison quotes Cathy Winkler in saying a rape is a “social murder,” because the rapist’s part in the interaction defines the victim through their actions that take away the victim’s sense of self. Any control that the victim felt over their body gets taken from them by the rapist. The consequences of this trauma include a loss of control over physiological functions, such as emotion and incapacitation from anxiety; the body and mind are out of balance, which leads the victim to be stigmatized by societ... ... middle of paper ... ...nts changes, that person’s self changes. The victim of the trauma must regain control over their life through the cooperation of others. In this way, the autonomy connects to the dependence of the victim on those around them. The dependence on others to be autonomous gets destroyed when the victim is traumatized; they lose their trust in those around them and they lose their ability to connect with humanity. Related to the idea of the narrative self, the autonomous person that existed before the trauma dies and the new self must become autonomous through narration to others. In this way, the self as an independent, the self as dependent on others, and the self as the physical being are integrated with one another and cannot be divided. Just as a self cannot exist without the context of its society, society cannot be without the selves that constitute its existence.
Lee uses the example of a Navaho mother to show the personal autonomy of a child. In this example the baby walks around the house without the mother keeping an eye on it. Although knowing that the baby could get hurt by the knife or the fire, she does not put away the sharp object, nor does she keeps the baby away from the fire. According to the authors of “Enhancing Care and Advocacy for Sexual Assault Survivors on Canadian Campuses”, “Sexual assault has immediate and long-term health consequences for victims including suicide, HIV infection, depression, and social isolation,” (Quinlan, Clarke, and Miller). Another common side effect these victims face is post-traumatic stress disorder. Someone experiencing PTSD may have random outburst of anger, have trouble concentrating on day to day tasks, or may even have flashbacks of their attack. These consequences make it hard for victims to get back into the normal routine of everyday life (“Effects of Sexual Assault”). In a case at Amherst College a young women named Angie Epifano faced many of these consequences after she was raped by an acquaintance in one of the college’s dormitories. While immediately choosing to ignore what had happened to her Epifano soon became an emotional wreck. Before the attack Epifano had believed herself to be an extremely strong and independent individual. In an article done on Epifano’s story she stated “Everything I had believed myself to be was gone in 30 minutes,” (Epifano). Sexual assault takes away a piece of someone. Oftentimes, people reach a point in their lives when they realize that they need to think for themselves and take responsibility for becoming who they are cut out to be. Whether or not they actually become that person is questionable. In Sickness Unto Death, Soren Kierkegaard argues that to become the "self" we must avoid despair and the influence of the world, and we must become what God wants us to be. In his essay, Self-Reliance, Ralph Waldo Emerson promotes the idea of individualism and how we must rely upon only ourselves and God to establish and support ourselves. I will first explain Kierkegaard’s idea of what it is to become a “self” then I will show the many parallels between Sickness unto Death and Self-Reliance.

In her essay “An Army of One: Me” Jean Twenge discusses about how self-esteem plays a role in the society and how it impacts the society. Both of these authors have woven their texts around the same theme which is ‘self ’. The self-dissociation which Stout illustrates in her essay is one extreme of the self. When people self-dissociate their minds go in one way while their body is still in the place where they were. These people don’t feel like they are in a normal condition. Overly enhanced self-esteem or narcissism, which is the eventual consequence of the overly enhanced self-esteem, is the other extreme of the ‘self’. Highly self-esteemed people think their point is always correct and they always deserve the best. Defense mechanisms are coping techniques used by people to relieve them from psychological trauma they experience when they fail to accomplish something. When people try to use defense mechanism excessively it will most probably lead to a life with severe hardships. Both self-dissociation and overly enhanced self-esteem are results of over usage of defense mechanisms; this will lead them to think their mind is far apart or different from their true selves. It will be difficult for both overly enhanced self-esteemed and self-dissociated people to have a day-to-day life in the society. Rape “is the perfected act of male sexuality in a patriarchal culture—it is the ultimate metaphor for domination, violence, subjugation, and possession” (Morgan 134). Story of a Rape Survivor shows these aspects of rape through its portrayal of Salamishah Tillet’s physical and mental recovery. In the first song of the performance, the focus is on how the rape left Salamishah Tillet “black and blue.” This demonstrates the physical violence endured by Tillet, and the bruising left behind. In addition, the bruising is also symbolic for the psychological bruises left behind. There is a stigma associated with rape that places the burden of guilt on the victim (Morgan). Salamishah Tillet discusses how she felt humiliated and depressed following the assault because of this stigma, and she struggled to overcome these difficulties, even refusing to tell her own sister until a few years after the attacks. The Reality of Death Dealing with the death of a loved one is one of life's most challenging obstacles. The pain and suffering that a person goes through cannot be fully understood unless experienced firsthand, like people that have experienced death through abortion. However, for some who have experienced death in war, death is something more like a game, where it is feared, yet made fun of in hopes of lessening the truth of reality. In the short story, “The Things They Carried”, by Tim O’Brian, the author demonstrates his attempts to make death less real through tactics like telling stories about the dead as if they were living, joking about zombies and conceiving the dead as items instead of people.

Every living organism from the coral in the sea to a human undergoes birth, a specialized life cycle and eventually death. Life is such a broad term with so many philosophical attachments from religion to evolution. Simply put, life is the ability to grow and change. Life separates plants and animals from things like water and rocks. For this paper I will focus on the different stages of human life, death and how the advancements in technology and medicine have directly affected both.

I agree with him because his statement is true, Steve Jobs’s statement says when someone finds out that that death is near, people tend to stop living the way they were living and start to make big changes on how to live and how to change their life. With my personal experience it is true. For example, when I was little I had to go to the ER due to having problems with my stomach. The doctors had told me that if I didn’t take care of my health I could end up dying in six months top. Death is something no one wants to have in mind, but by just accepting that it is bound to happen anytime you feel like a switch has turned on in your head and your mind starts guiding you towards making huge choices you wouldn't have done. I was depressed at first but then I realized I didn’t want to die at such a young age so had to make changes to keep myself safe from dying. I changed my diet plans, I started to increase my education and I also changed my aspect in life.
The distinction between life and death largely relies on the current definitions of life and death. Illogically, there seems to be less disagreement about the definition of death, while the definition of life remains controversial. In a legally perfect world, the factors considered for declaration of death would be the same factors considered to define life, however, that does not appear to be the case. While the current definitions of death are fairly consistent but not free of conflict, the definition of life remains controversial.
