What is Bullying?
Bullying is repeated negative and hurtful acts, against another person, especially children who are vulnerable.

Over the past years, bullying has grown to become a widespread and serious problem affecting nearly 3 out of 4 students at some point during their school age years.

A recent report from the American Medical Association on a study of over 15,000 6th-10th graders estimates that approximately 3.7 million youths engage in, and more than 3.2 million are victims of, moderate or serious bullying yearly.

It is further estimated that nearly 160,000 children in the United States are absent from school each day for fear of being bullied or picked on by other students. Source: National Education Association.

• About twenty percent of teens had been made fun of by a bully.
• Sixty-four percent of children who were bullied did not report it.
• Sixty-four percent of students enrolled in weight-loss programs reported experiencing weight-based victimization.
• Eighty-four percent of students observed students perceived as overweight being called names or getting teased during physical activities.
• School-based prevention programs decrease bullying by up to twenty-five percent (Pacer's National Bullying Prevention Center).

When and how does bullying occur?
Bullying can occur anywhere and at any time and causes the victim to feel uncomfortable, helpless and unable to defend himself or herself.
Bullying usually starts as playful teasing during elementary school and may worsen in middle school. Although bullying never completely stops, it may decline in high school.

Who are Bullies?
A bully is a person who purposely tries to hurt or intimidate others. Bullies usually select those who are younger, smaller and/or different than them.

Types of Bullying Bullying can be:
