In high school, my favorite class to attend was outdoor leadership. I plan to continue to study the criteria of this class by pursuing a career in environmental studies and recreational management. My goal is to become a forest ranger for the state of Maine and travel to states that may need my assistance and help during bad times. I have always enjoyed the outdoors and wildlife and I was lucky enough to attend a school that offered an outdoor class. I have always been interested in the outdoors and recreation. Being a course about leadership, I was able to learn several takeaways important to being a leader.
I am fond of leadership because of my experience with the empowering feeling that being a leader provides. I see leadership as a daunting challenge in a school. There are so many factors to consider and how each decision affects so many different aspects of the school environment. I know I need practice in presenting my vision and mission to a staff and being an effective leader to get a community to follow my lead.
For the public space observation assignment, I went to Barnes and nobles from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. I sat to the left of the Starbucks counter next to the restroom facing those who were sitting and standing near me. Once I sat down, I grabbed a pen and a piece of paper and began to observe what I saw. This assignment took me out of my comfort zone, giving me the opportunity to think, see, and hear like a sociologist. I was able to separate myself from the surrounding things, which helped me focus more on the behaviors and interactions of others. Because this is a place where people go to study and read the appropriate behavior would be to respect those around you by being quiet. Coming into this major I had no idea what to expect and the same went for this course, but I did know that it dealt with leadership, something that I have been steeped in for a good part of my life. So with that, it was hard to really set any goals as to what I would want to improve in with my leadership style but I was able to pin point a few aspects that could use some work through learning about different leadership techniques and methods. By learning about how leaders are formed, different approaches to leading groups and various aspects effecting group dynamics, I could determine an individuals or my own strengths in leadership and the methods necessary to effectively lead various types of groups. Also by observing many others in facilitating the after school program it gave me much more of an opportunity to see what works and what does not, this is an opportunity very few leaders get without being thrust into a role that they are ill prepared for.
Learning from some of the best facualty in the Recreation field has prepared me a wide array of job opportunities. Courses in Event Planning, Park Planning, Tourism Management and Outdoor Recreation Leadership have given me the skills and knowledge to be a successful recreation specialist and program manager.
Over the course of the semester, I observed at three off campus locations and experienced general music in grades K-5. In addition to my off campus experiences, I also observed Dr. Whitcomb’s in-class preschool demonstration. My final observation at the daycare on campus will not be included in this paper, as I will only be completing my field experience there a few hours before the submission of this journal.
I observed at St. Eve’s Learning Center location in their preschool room. The center has a naturalistic feel to the environment and all of the staff is friendly and welcoming. The classroom displayed best practices, modern theories and research, and followed expected standards set by their accreditations.
Students in grade school attend school for about 7-8 hours a day where they sit in the same four wall classrooms and develop their intelligence on the same subject. Over time the work ethic of the students begin to decrease. This is where an Outdoor classroom needs to be developed, to enhance the work ethic of the students and, for school club use. Have you ever realized that playgrounds help shape us into the people we become and they are the first place we experience socialization? Playgrounds aren’t just a place for children but for every age, ethnic background and so forth. They are the place where we go to hang out with friends, watch our children, play games, have birthday parties, listen to music, and just to observe others. The paper I am going to write consists of a few things I observed while watching my daughter.
My interest peaked when I took up a Diploma in Sports & Leisure Management with Outdoor Education Elective. I continued to pursue my interest and have been working as an outdoor educator since 2008.
The school that I visited was new. It was the first year of the school opening. The school board had combined two schools into one, so the students had to adjust to their new environments and new individuals. They seemed to be getting along well with each other. Since the school is new the teacher has to adjust to new problems that araise. Times for the subjects and times for using the computer labs change. So the teacher must always be fixable for anything. In this observation of this classroom I learned about the enjoyment of teaching. How you have to adapt to each of the students.
I attended a second grade class at Smallville Elementary on February 22, 2014; the class began promptly at 0855. There are 26 children in this second grade class. There are 15 male students and 11 female students. The student diversity is 2 Hispanics, 1 African-American, 1 East Indian, and 1 New Zealander (White but with an extreme accent). Three children were left-handed.
The students that I observed in the classroom were of middle to high school. I went to see 8th, freshman, 10th , and seniors classes, they seemed excited and very curious to why I was there. The middle school was more alive and rambunctious while I observed them. The High school kids were more relaxed, more comical. Some were paying attention while others seemed tuned out to the lecture or involved in socialization with friends within the class. By the end of the class Mr. Hasgil had restored the attention of everyone by using tactics such as history jeopardy with candy as the prize with the high school kids. In both he middle school and high school the kids were mostly Caucasian with a mixture of black, Asian , and Hispanic in the classes.
For my observation experience I went to Southern High School in Harwood, MD. Southern High School has a special education department for the students with disabilities. The teacher that I met with for this classroom observation was Ms. West. In the classroom there were at least four assistant teachers that helped Ms. West throughout the school day. The assistant teachers helped Ms. West co- teach the class and were there to help the students if they needed extra help. The school also has a couple of student aides that come in to help the teachers and the students in the classroom. There were at least twelve students in the classroom. The students in the class had many different exceptionalities such as learning disabilities, Down syndrome,
