“You will grow up on your own time; no one can force you,” is the main lesson in both of the stories Everything Will Be Okay and Out of my Mind. Both of the main characters, James and Melody, want to be just like someone and want to do what they do. Also, these two characters realize that they have to be themselves, and no one can force them to be something that they aren’t. These two stories may be very similar in the way that they teach this life lesson, but they are also very different. In both of these stories, the main characters are letting other people control who they really are inside. In the story, Out of my MInd, the main character Melody has a disability where she cannot walk, talk, and she can barely move her body, but this doesn’t affect how her brain learns. She wants to be able to run, walk, and talk just like all the other kids. She wants to have all of these things before she can accept who she really is. This is truly important because it shows the kids that read the book how important it is not to judge people based on if they have a disability or not. This is just like in the story, Everything Will be Okay, how James is trying to be just like his brothers and his father. For example, he was going to go hunting with his dad, not because he wanted to, but because he wanted his father to like …show more content…
him. He also struggled with this because if he went, he didn’t want to kill animals. Another example of this is when in the story James wanted to work at Dr.Milk’s (town veterinarian) clinic, just like all his brothers did when they lived in town. In both stories, the main characters are letting other people to control who they are. In both stories, it takes something for the characters to realize that they have to be who they truly are. The bad things that happened to both of these characters helped them realize that they need to be themselves, and that they can’t change who they are. In Out of my Mind, Melody wanted to be just like all the other kids. She wanted to be able to hang out and talk to them. She wanted to to be “normal”. At the end of the story Melody realizes after she competes in the Whiz Kids competition (a jeopardy-like competition for kids that try out) that she has her own special gift, which was her brain. Melody realizes that she doesn’t have to be like the other kids because she is perfectly fine just the way she is. In the short story, Everything Will Be Okay, James realizes that he doesn’t have to be like his brothers or his dad. This happens when near the end of the story James and his brother, Paul, have to put down the sick kitten that James found by the woods. James was devastated, and he realized that since he would have to do these types of things, he will not work for Dr. Milk in his future. He also realizes at this point that he doesn’t have to be like his dad. The story quotes, “ When I am older, I will go hunting with my father the way my brothers have done. I try not to think about this. I want to go, because I want my father to like me. But I don’t want to kill animals.” So James then realizes that he doesn’t want to go hunting or work for Dr. Milk because he doesn’t want to kill animals. In conclusion, both of these stories teach an important lesson, that you will grow up how you want to, and no one can tell you different.
Out of my Mind teaches this in a great way. It teaches us that you can’t judge someone by if they have a disability or not. Melody wanted to be just like all the others at her school, but she never realized how special she really was. In the story, Everything Will Be Okay, it teaches us that you don’t have to be like the other people in your life and that you just have to be yourself. This lesson goes out to everyone in the world because you have to remember, you will grow up on your own time; no one can force
you.
He was offered a “Club cap” but James “gave it back” to his friend, Kris. They waited until Kris left the apartment building, then played a game of checkers. James had wanted to fit in with his friends in the “K-Bones” club but had realized that his brother was more important. He pushed his friend away to play games with Isaac. Furthermore, James has to “take care of” Isaac when his mother is at work. Even when he is trying to fit in with a devious club, he would still “hold Isaac’s hand” or even “carry him home”. James is a very nice and caring brother. This is logical because, that is what a good brother should look like. James must truly love Isaac as his brother, and admires his family more than his
The basic premise of the two plots is the same. Both stories deal with the capture of a young person who is to be groomed to live in a private, controlled environment to make them happy, but where they are never able to leave.
These two stories, although written by two different authors present similarities in the characteristics of the main character. Sammy and Tommy are presented with adversity they had previously never faced. Sammy has to decide should he stand up for the girls by quitting and be the hero or should he mind his own business and keep his job. Sammy is forced to quickly make a decision which his boss Lengel feels he made to rashly. “’I don’t think you know what you’re saying,’ Lengel said” (Updike, pg. 146). For Sammy his decision is what he feels he needs to do and he never regrets his choice. Tommy is faced with adversity of a different kind, he has to decide should he believe the teacher and listen to what she is saying or should he, like the other children, think she is strange and a liar. When she loses her job Tommy is forced to make a decision, confront the child who got her fired, or stay quiet and let the matter slide as it is not his problem. For both the boys their actions could be beneficial to them or it could cause them future problems. An example, if Sammy...
Unknown, to James at this point he did not realize that he was having a problem with a psychological theory called behaviorism. Now this theory is one that is saying human behavior is developed through learning experiences which in this case would apply to James. His behavior as an adult was reflected by the way he was treated as a kid by his father and mother because they fought all the time. They never truly paid any attention to him, which in terms taught him how to stay out of their way and learn how to steal and burglarize places without getting caught. Therefore, within the psychological theory of behaviorism Behaviorists saw crime as something that is a learned response to life’s situations such as James situation which led him to a life of crime because of his parents. Although, he was never truly mistreated, he did not receive his father attention due to the fact of the way his father was treated as a child growing up an abusive household. Therefore, he did not want to place his son in the same situation. There is also the fact that James could be suffering from the psychodynamic theory which says that a person’s personality can be controlled by their unconscious mental process and that is grounded in them in early childhood. These entire things such as the id, ego, and superego
An excellent example of this view of the mentally handicapped can be found in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, with the character Lennie. The other characters in this novel such as George and Curley treat Lennie as if he were a child all throughout the novel. George never lets him do any of the talking when t...
Being left out is never a pleasant experience for anyone, especially when society is shaped to exclude people who do not fit the standards of being “normal.” A sense of belonging is a fundamental human need. Human contract is essential for surviving; therefore, being left out hurts on a physical and psychological level, often times resulting in severe depression and anxiety. One part in the book that stood out to me was when the taxi driver refused to take her to her hotel by saying “this is not an ambulance.” These kinds of situations are hurtful and result in a sense of loneliness; however, Simi does a good job by moving forward. She becomes accepting of her disability by forcing herself to realize that she does have an important role in the world regardless of her impairment. As a society we need to correct our negative views on disability so that we can progress and focus our behavior on improving society’s overall atmosphere to avoid having unfavorable interactions between
We have learned our own individual personality can drive our sense of direction. The choices James made during his childhood where not his fought, he did not have the parental guidance during his developmental stage. Amazingly, he conquered all to obstacles to become successful.
Both stories deal with a young girl who, with the help of a little magic, is able to find her prince and live happily ever after. Needless to say on of these versions is much darker than the other, but the story sends an overall good message.
Another powerful video, Including Samuel, ignited my insight in this week’s class. As I heard in the video, “inclusion is an easy thing to do poorly.” The movie chronicles the life of a young boy, Samuel, and his family. With the shock of learning about their son’s disability, it caused his parents, Dan and Betsy, to experience the unexpected. Nevertheless, they did everything to include their son and help him live a normal life focused on his capabilities, rather than his incapabilities. I even admired how his friends knew so much about him, his likes and dislikes, his strengths and his weaknesses.
The biggest difference between the two texts is that one is about gangs and racism while the other is about the way a boy’s perception of his father changes as he grows up. However, both texts cleverly use techniques to convey messages that are relevant to our society.
...r but Octavia tells him "You not a bum," she says. "You a man."(p.404) This is significant because it shows he is not seen as a young boy by his mother anymore, he is now seen as a man. We see the influence and change in James by all of the life lessons his mother instills in him, she tells him he needs to not cry, to be strong, and be able to stand alone symbolizes that he must be independent, he must also put others before himself and do things he may not like to do but must do as a necessity to live, such as killing the cardinal birds for supper. Helena also shows James that everything in life you must work for, that is why she tells him to take out the trash cans.
Out of My Mind is a book by Sharon Draper. Out of My Mind is about a girl named, Melody with cerebral palsy. She is unable to move or speak, Melody uses her Medi-Talker to communicate. Although Melody is very intelligent because she has a photographic memory, she has to endure being bullied and teased by the other kids without disabilities. I believe this book deserves 3 stars because of the plot, language, and the character development.
Things that are similar about the two novels and how both of their dreams were crushed are both are groups of people who have these dreams and each finds or meets something that can help their dreams come true, the pearl and Candy. Furthermore, the realization of their dreams coming to an end is, in both books, caused by the death of someone who is a part of the dream, Coyotito and Lennie.
James was an authoritarian parent. He was controlling, in-charge and no one questioned him. He would play the role of the doting father. When his children made mistakes, he made a point to criticize them. He often compared them to other kids that he felt were “more perfect.” When his often unspoken expectations were not met he would yell and scream striking fear into his entire family. “He’s not a warm, fuzzy kind of guy, and he’s not going to inspire feelings of intimacy. But when his system works, he can boast about one thing: His recruits tend to obey” (Dewar).
...d handicap can be taught but it could be a bit of a sore subject for students who have suffered these issues. Teachers may use films and videos to show what may happen when a family lacks either a mother or father figure. According to Lisa A. Miles a dysfunctional family is”is affected by mental illness, trauma from tragedy, or simply by being headed by individuals with very poor parenting skills.” (PsychCentral). A student who has dealt with this may not be comfortable with this. The same can be applied for any of the themes or topics discussed in the play. If a teacher wishes to teach of dealing with a handicapped person a teacher could make her students speak sentences backwards just like Jhana did in order to show how hard it may have been for Maddie to deal with. These topics if taught the right way by the right teacher can make for a very good play to teach.
