Recommended: Our town analysis

This is a review for the play Our Town produced by Northern Stage Theater White River Junction, VT. Our Town is a playwright by Thornton Wilde. Wilder explores human traditions and the steadfastness of natural environment. The people, the individual human lives in Our Town transient, are influenced greatly by the rapid passage of time. The Stage Manager often notes that time seems to pass quickly for the people in the play. At one point, having not looked at his watch for a while, the Stage Manager misjudges the time, which demonstrates that sometimes even the timekeeper himself falls victim to the passage of time. The stage and the surrounding help make a play what it is. Northern Stage Theater has a very nice setup and lighting. And also their sound setup is very well thought out. I know what it should be like from personal experience and what they did with it was very good. Also the lighting and how it could go up and down was also very good. Their choice of not using props was very original to the play and I think it made everyone focus more on the actors than on anything that they were doing. Their choice of using modern cloths was a nice touch because It allowed the spectators to connect more with the actors. My opinion of the play is that it was very well throughout and the actors did a nice job. They stuck true to the play with only a few modern touches. The audience seemed enthralled with the actors which made it easier to pay attention. I would have changed what they did with the slide show but I think they did everything else well. I would recommend everyone should see this performance. It really lets you experience the play to its fullest. I would even go and see it again if I

    This production was originally a book and was made into a play by Simon Stephens. The actors he casted such as Joseph Ayre, who played the main character Christopher, were perfect for the production (About the Show). He was able to correctly portray the life of a child with autism and how the brain of an autistic child operates. The audience was really able to feel all of the emotions and struggles that he had to go through on an everyday basis. It is very difficult to act out the symptoms of a disorder that many people don’t understand. An additional actor that added to the play was Nicolas Tennant who played Ed Boone, Christopher’s father (About the Show). He was full of emotions of anger and displayed to the audience how much patience and calmness the parents of an autistic child need to make the relationship between them work. Where the production could have been better were in the category of the set and the lighting. It was overwhelming and took away from parts of the actors performance. The role of the lightning and video designers were taken by Paule Constable and Finn Ross (About the Show). The use of the set, props, lighting and sound in a production should all be supportive and add depth to each of the characters roles. The characters, the three part scenery and costumes represented well the period of time these people were going through. As far as the performers entering and exiting the stage, it could have been more organized.     The most successful aspect of the performance for me were the scene changes. I found that the rotation of the blackboard, center stage, where the actors were able to stoop beneath it in order to enter and exit the stage, was an effective touch to this non naturalistic performance. When this was first used, at the end of the first scene, when the characters Ruth and Al left the stage, I thought it didn't quite fit as at the beginning the style was leaning towards realism. But as the play progressed and the acting style became more and more non naturalistic, and this rotation of the black board technique was used more frequently it fitted in really well and became really effective.
