Almost 9 years later, I reflect back on my grade school adventures at Incarnate Word Academy and wonder what grand things my future in high school may hold. I look back fondly on all the years and lessons I have learned. Out of all the years, all the homework, projects, reports, field trips and friendships, my kindergarten teacher taught me a very valuable lesson. This is the message that I feel that Our Lady of the Elms will assist me to foster in high school and eventually into my adult life. The lesson I learned in kindergarten was something that I remember my teacher whispering everyday… “small miracles”. I see my love of dance continuing. Although a tiny percentage of young dancers will move on to a professional dance career, it is the “small things” that happen in a dance studio, that are some of the “great things” that I hope to spread to others. I would love to be part of the dance program revitalization at Our Lady of the Elms. Dance is not just about an individual. It teaches one that by contributing the same effort as everyone else remarkable things can be done. Through dance I have gained a sense of balance in life by managing commitments to both dance and academics. In his book, Ordinary Resurrections: Children in the Years of Hope, Jonathan Kozol pulls back the veil and provides readers with a glimpse of the harsh conditions and unrelenting hope that exists in a community located in the South Bronx called Mott Haven. Mr. Kozol provides his own socially conscious and very informative view of the issues facing the children and educators in this poverty ravaged neighborhood. Just his commentary would paint a very bleak picture of the future. It is the words of the children that give this book optimism and meaning. The courage and care exhibited by the volunteers of St. Ann's after school program and the creativity of the teachers at P.S. 30 are utterly inspiring. They work long hours and go beyond the call of duty to protect the innocence and cultivate the hope that resides in the hearts of Mott Haven's youngest residents.

This experience also helped as the same friends and I had 2 weeks to choreograph, perfect, and perform alongside a famous Indian singer as he sang live. Ballet is an athletic art form that utilizes muscle control, flexibility, and physical strength. It requires extreme discipline from the dancers and takes an extreme amount of mental concentration. This discipline causes dancers to have success throughout life and specifically in academic studies. There are many ways that dance can affect the success of a person’s life; however, there are two in specific that make dancers generally more successful. To begin, ballet causes dancers to be self-motivated workers; dancers cannot rely on others to push them to be better, but must have the drive within themselves.
It will allow me to be a manager and better my leadership skills. I will learn how to manage a big group of people, which is something that can be applied to many various careers. I will learn the best way to be a teacher and to stay calm and focused when things get difficult or crazy. All of these skills are not only applicable to the dance world, but to life in general.
Since the age of two, I have been dancing. I have been involved in lyrical and classical ballet, contemporary, pointe, hiphop, jazz and tap. When I turned 6 I also took up gymnastics. Through middle school I danced, and did gymanstics as well as softball and soccer. I loved these sports but when high school hit, I had to pick one and I chose cheerleading. I chose this sport because it was not only a extraordinary team athletically but they were extremely involved with the community. We had fundraisers for less fortunate children multiple times and even got to interact with them every winter. The leadership role on the cheer team taught me so much, we lead the entire student body to have school spirit and respect at the football games every friday night. My senior year I decided to switch back to dance and tried out for my high school dance team, and made it! It has been such a blessing to me by showing me even more leadership and how to serve others at our school and in the community.
My traits have led me to my current path in ways unimaginable. My dancing skills allow me to persevere through difficult challenges, be more flexible, and adapt to change more efficiently, while my quiet confidence allows me to be more humble. With the help of these talents and traits and the lessons I learned from them, I am able to be the most excellent version of myself and make the best out of my life. In the present day, I can assess how these traits help me in school, at home, and in the dance studio. According to Judith Hanna, “dance may promote wellness by strengthening the immune system through muscular action and physiological processes,” which shows that a person can benefit from dancing by allowing the body to do physical exercises which can allow the body to strengthen itself. In order to do this, there are multiple ways in which Judith Hanna focuses in on to show that dance can have a powerful impact on the body. I have been dancing since the age of four. I started my intense training with Tanju and Patricia Tuzer, Debra Bale, and Linda Brown at Tuzer Ballet. I developed as a dancer, attending every summer intensive performing in every show, advancing from intermediate to apprentice to junior company and finally to senior company. Dance has always served a form of great exercise that allows people to express themselves through movement, and will continue to do so into the future. Dance education in the elementary level is a place that may need some help in child development, and the way to solve this problem is by getting classroom teachers who are skilled in dance and creative movement instruction. Dance education in the secondary level also needs to get highly skilled teachers who are also certified in dance themselves. It would also help attract more students if dance was presented in a different department other than physical education. Dance education in the college level is taught by certified dance instructors, therefore dancers in this level are able to explore movements, while being critiqued by someone who knows what is happening. Dance education has played a major role in the development of children of all ages, and will continue to do so, as long as dance educators and dancers have the proper support.
