The film ‘O’ directed by Tim Blake Nelson is a recognised contemporary interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Othello, which addresses a number of issues that are relevant to a modern day audience compared to that of the past. The director of the film has changed crucial parts of the play which makes the play such a classic, which has essentially ruined the literary value of Othello. This is evident for a number of concepts including, the overt links between the play and film, the power of words and language and Iago and his motives
The director of ‘O’ has made errors which causes Othello to lose its literary value. Othello is known as classic artistic play however, the director of the film has caused the play to lose this element. Of course the director has made overt links between the play and the film. The obvious links between the play and the film include the naming of the characters for example naming Othello’s character O and naming Desdemona’s character Desi. When Desi and O first have sexual intercourse they are in a hotel called ‘Willow’ which represents the song sung by Desdemona when she is about to die. The role of women in the play and the film remain the same, the submissive and obedient type. Yet, in today’s society women would be more confident and feministic in their ways. These obvious and almost childlike connections between ‘O’ and Othello does not necessarily mean that ‘O’ is effective appropriation of the play.

The new – give motives (typical hollywood) drugs and dad – brings Iago back to audience’s ‘reality’ of the world and hence destroys any substance to character and movie.
Nelson goes so far to completely interpret the character of iago incorrectly, and impress his interpretations on the audience.
In the film the director has made the mistake of giving Hugo motives such as the use of steroids and his father saying ‘I love Odin like he is my own son’. This causes Hugo to rage with anger and jealousy and therefore plan his devious revenge. This is the typical Hollywood film that spoon feeds the audience so they know exactly what is going on. In the original Iago is given know reason to act like this towards Othello, the audience is left to interpret

Jealousy is a dominating factor in both the modern day and Shakespearean Othello. In Othello, the jealousy develops from Iago, who thinks he has been overlooked as his flag officer and as Othello's loyal best friend. In "O", Hugo is jealous of his father's relationship with Odin. Hugo's father, Duke, is also the basketball coach of the team both Odin and Hugo play for. Odin is the team captain and receives the "most valuable player" award which he shares with his "go-to guy," Mike--not Hugo. Hugo believes that he is the M.V.P. of the Hawks and is filled with jealousy when his father gives the award to Odin and says, "I'm very proud to say this publicly, I love him like my own son" ("O").
These differences are created to relate to people in this generation. Iago is a very confident, devious, terrible person. For example Iago never doubts his plans. He always believes that his plans will work to convince Othello of the worst. What creates his almost perfect plan is how well he knows Othello. Iago knows what will make Othello second guess himself. What makes Iago devious is the way in which he performs his plans. He acts as if he is a best friend of Othello while he secretly attempts to ruin his life. Lastly, what makes Iago a terrible person in general is how he has no respect or care for who he hurts in the process of ruining Othello’s life. He kills his own wife, Emilia, which proves his lack of care for others. However, in a few scenes Iago can be humorous. For example in many scenes with Roderigo the audience sees a humorous way in which Iago manipulates people and lies through his teeth. On the other hand, Hugo has similar personality traits such as being devious and manipulative. In “O” Hugo sneaks around and discovers ways in which he can make Odin or others look bad without getting any blame. Hugo manipulates a boy name Roger, which like Roderigo is the one who does the dirty work. Unlike Iago, Hugo appears to have childish or jealous-like characteristics. He has ‘daddy issues’ which means he wishes that his father would approve of him the way that he does

The film “O” produced in 2001 is a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Othello. The movie was both filmed and is centered around Charleston, South Carolina. The movie follows the downfall of Odin James (Othello) a revered high school basketball player who is made to believe by his best friend Hugo Golding (Iago) that his girlfriend Desi (Desdemona) is cheating on him with fellow teammate Michael Cassio (Cassio). Like the original play it focuses on themes like sexuality, deception, betrayal, and murder. However, it includes themes of race and substance abuse in order to modernize it as well as bring in relevant issues.
As early as the first scene of the play Iago shows us strong motives for his actions. In this first scene we see Othello, a general of Venice, has made Cassio his new lieutant. Iago feels he truly deserves his promotion as he says "I know my price, I am worth more no worse a place."(l.i.12) Iago over here is confused why Othello has made such a stupid decision. Iago is a man with a tremendous ego who knows, sometimes overestimates, his worth. Roderigo, a Venetian gentleman, understands Iago when Iago said that he is "affined to love the Moor."(l.i.41-42) What Iago really means is "I follow him to serve my term upon him."(l.i.45) Iago wants to use Othello for his personal goals. We also must put ourselves into Iago's shoes. He is a man whose self-esteem and professional carrier have just been torn apart. Iago makes his actions of revenge toward Othello almost immediately by informing Brabantio, a Venetian senator and father of Desdemona, that "an old black ram (Othello) is tupping (his) white ewe (Desdemona)."(l.i.97)

There are many reasons why we study William Shakespeare’s plays today. There is the insight into human nature that he knows well, allusions to old mythology and legends, and others. However, one reason stands out above the rest: his power of language. Also, this power of language is clearly shown in his play, Othello, through Iago, the antagonist of the play. Iago, who is an ensign of Othello, is furious that he was not given the promotion of lieutenancy. As a result, he uses his craftiness and his “power of language” to take revenge on Othello. Within Shakespeare’s Othello there is an analysis into the context of the female. Brabantio’s rhyming couplet “Look to her, Moor, If thou hast eyes to see/ She has deceived her father, and may thee,” demonstrates his domineering and patronising attitude, as the Elizabethan era was a patriarchal society and the role of the female was to be ‘obedient’ to their father or husband. Brabantio also endeavours into placing a seed of doubt in Othello’s mind as a result of his jealousy. Consequentially Brabantio objectifies Desdemona when he states, “Where has thou stow’d my daughter?” exemplifying how he deems her as a possession, which can be stolen like any other. Othello prolongs this objectification through asserting that he “won his daughter” portraying Desdemona as a prize to be won, and a possession to be owned and argued over by husband and father. Essential to the success of Othello is the fact that the issues and themes explored in this tragedy, written by Shakespeare in about 1604, are still relevant to the modern audience. The interest of an audience is held by themes that are fundamental to the human condition, as these reflect our world and examine human nature. Othello explores the issues of racism, gender, domestic violence, the supernatural and the pathology of the entirely evil person, which are all remarkably relevant to our time. Thus the interest of the audience is held, as issues that affect the viewers and readers of the play spark individual opinions, reflection and thought.

Iago gives many reasons for his duplicitous actions throughout Othello. In the opening scene he tells Roderigo that although three great men of the city told Othello to name Iago as his lieutenant, Othello instead chose Cassio, who Iago describes as a man “that never set a squadron in the field / Nor the division of a battle knows / More than a spinster – unless the bookish theoric, / Wherein the togaed consuls can propose / As masterly as he” (I.i 23-27). This jealousy derived from Othello passing up Iago in favor of Cassio is most similar to the reasons given for Hugo’s actions in O, but it is expanded in the film to include another character that overlooks Hugo: his father. Iago has no family other than his wife, yet Hugo is given a basketball coach for a father to reinforce that jealousy is the basis for Hugo’s actions. While Hugo’s father may be filling a role in the film equivalent to that of the Duke in the play, Iago and the Duke have no recognizable relationship.
