Tragedies and Comedies are two type of genres Shakespeare used to shape his many of his plays. Although these two may seem entirely different in their ideas and plots, they share similar emotions. Even though emotions can be depicted differently by the plot, they ultimately are the same when stripped and broken down into their core meanings. Jealousy is an emotion when broken down, can be seen as a representation of something that is negative and only brings hypocrisy along with destruction. Jealousy is an emotion that plays a crucial role in the two plays Othello and Much Ado about Nothing. Iago is a cynic man who is able to twist the truth and deceive Othello into believing his wife desdemona has been unfaithful to him. Othello, who is quick to judge immediately becomes jealous because he thinks Cassio is sleeping with his wife. Unable to see past the wall of lies, he becomes engulfed in a world of anger. This anger is caused by jealousy and prohibits him from thinking clearly as he quickly decides he must not only kill Cassio but Desdemona too. He tells Iago that he“ will Chop her into messes!” (IV.i.203).Othello’s level of ferocity during this moment creates a negative tone from his violent threats; the phrase “chop her into messes” has no positive connotations as Shakespeare deliberately attempts to show that anger and jealousy are both negative emotions. Othello’s inability to see that these allegations are simply lies, shows that jealousy has taken control over his judgement and has caused him to become confused of what is the truth.What is surprising is how quick he is willing to end the life of the woman he loves over a lie that has not been proven true.
