In chapters 1 to 8 of the novel Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, there is the presence of a human relationship. The human relationships that were present in chapters 1 to 8 are about family, friends and sexual relationships. In chapters 1 to 3 of the book the main character Jimmy also called as Snowman, his father works in an OrganInc Farm and HelthWyzer as a scientist, which his job is to provide human organs for transplantation, and through this they use an animal like pigs to customized the genetic makeup of an individual who is in need of a replacement of an organ. The animal that has the genetically human organ was called ‘pigoons’. Jimmy’s mother was once a scientist who worked in the OrganInc

Farm too, where his father is working but then his mother became disappointed with her work so she quit the job. Jimmy’s mother quit the job because she claimed that she wanted to spend more time with her son, this shows a human relationship between mother and son which most mothers wanted to be with their child while they are still young.

Mothers like to spend more of their time for their children because they want to see their children grow by their side and teach them lessons. In the novel, Jimmy’s mother was a housewife who prepares food for her family, cleans the house and provides care for her son and husband. As the chapter goes by, the family of Jimmy was broken in which his mom left suddenly. Jimmy’s mother left because of the argument that she had with his father. The argument that his parents had was the job of his father in which the another reason why Jimmy’s mother quit her job was because the company where she once worked and where Jimmy’s father is working which is the OrganInc Farm and the HelthWyzer, she knew that the company were introducing diseases or sickness into the society in order to profit from their cures which are transplanting human organs. Jimmy’s mother argued with his father because she does not want her husband’s work which is immoral because they are spreading disease while Jimmy’s father does not want to leave his job and so Jimmy’s mother left. Even though the mother of Jimmy left, she left a

note for Jimmy saying that she still loves him.

Another human relationship that appeared in the chapters that I read is about friendship.

Jimmy met a friend named Glen who was called in the book as Crake. Before the disappearance of Jimmy’s mother he met Crake who did not react much on the disappearance of Jimmy’s mother which he just said that “Some people needed to change”. Jimmy and Crake met in the school which Crake was a new student in their school and the teacher asked Jimmy to be with Crake to tour the school and time goes by Jimmy and Crake became friends because Jimmy found that Crake’s sense of humor is appealing. As time goes by Jimmy and Crake always hangs out at lunch and during weekends. Jimmy and Crake started playing video games during their past time, also they would surf the internet together and watch movies. There are times that Crake hacks his uncle Pete’s private code to gain access to websites that are not for young people, and Crake also knew where his uncle Pete hides his skunkweeds. When Crake and Jimmy smoke the weeds that they stole they will use Uncle Pete’s code to access sites where they can watch porn and executions. Then when Jimmy goes home, his father and the live-in partner of his father do not realize that something is wrong with Jimmy. In connection to our society, I believe that some group of friends has also something that they are hiding just like Jimmy and Crake which they smoke weeds, and watch unforbidden movies. I believe that some of these people must be the ones who also

have a family problems, in which the youths will rebel when they know that something wrong is happening in their family but in Jimmy’s situation his mother just left and through this he knew that no one will get mad at him knowing that his father does not care much about what he is doing and some youth in our society today use to do bad things knowing that nobody would care what they are doing when their parents is not around with them. Lastly, sexual relationship is also present in the chapters that I read in which, when Jimmy and Crake use to watch porn, Jimmy caught the attention of one girl in the porn movie that they are watching. Since the time that he caught the attention of the girl he asked Crake to print off a picture of the girl, and through this, I think that Jimmy is having a sexual desire for the girl that he saw in the movie.

Human Relationship in the novel Oryx and Crake, was all about the family that was once happy and suddenly was broken which is Jimmy’s parents. Another human relationship that is in the novel was about friendship which Jimmy met Crake who he can trust, have comfort, and play with and became his Best Friend. The sexual relationship had also appeared in which Jimmy found a girl from the movie that they are watching and had a sexual desire for the girl.
