One of the very first things you need to do is to determine if the orthodontist in question is actually a sspecifialy or if the individual is a dentist that does orthodontics. While it may not seem like there's a difference between the two, an official orthodontist receives approxiamtely 4,000 to 6,000 hours of hands-on expereince and they have to go through 3 years of additonal tretyament after they have finished dental school. Dental hygiene is amongst many professions that come with an increased risk of injury. In fact, evidence suggests that the incidence of dental professionals acquiring musculoskeletal disorders is reaching 96%. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), these complications are a result of “repetitive motion or awkward posture for more than 2 hours at a time, unassisted frequent manual handling (eg, scaling an area using the same strokes), and unassisted forced manual handling (eg, heavy calculus removal using hand-activated instruments)”. These complications not only affect the quality of life for the
We have all had those dentist or orthodontist appointments that were a complete nightmare. Getting poked, jabbed, and pinched in the mouth. Well, I have been thinking since I have had this experience and wouldn’t want anyone else to go through that. Maybe I could become an orthodontist and ensure to my patients that these problems do not happen. I enjoy helping people that I don’t know and being as precise as I need to be, to be an orthodontist. Though I have never had any experience at all with any of this, that is what school is for. I realize that being an orthodontist is the best career choice for me.

First of all, if I had not gotten my braces, then my teeth would not be how they are today. They are perfectly straight thanks to Dr. Spiller. I wear my retainer every night. Their company has allowed me to design my own retainer, and I wear it every night to keep my teeth straight for the years to come. Every time that I have an orthodontics appointment, I am greeted with a smile. The staff always makes me feel welcome, and they are gentle when working on my teeth. Every trip I have taken to the orthodontist has

Over ten years ago, I met two patients who forever changed the way I viewed my role as a practicing dental hygienist. I greeted the first, a 34 year-old male patient, and escorted him to my operatory. He looked different from most patients, as he wore a medical mask covering his mouth. Surprisingly, I noticed he could not speak, communicating only by using a dry eraser board. On his board, he wrote that he only had six months to live and wanted a tooth pulled so he could be out of pain. As he removed the medical mask from his face, I saw a large tumor that displaced several teeth on the inside of his mouth. The tumor was very disfiguring, and he was clearly in pain. I knew I was staring at oral cancer in the face. Ultimately, the dentist came in and the patient received palliative care that day. But, I never saw him again.
Professionalism in the dental profession refers to our responsibilities and obligations that exists throughout our entire dental career. “Professional competence is the habitual and judicious use of communication, knowledge, technical skills, clinical reasoning, emotions, values and reflection in daily practice for the benefit of the individual and community being served (Kirk, 2007).” A health professional must be able to regulate their own behavior and comply with a code of ethics in professional practice. Fundamental principles of professionalism include primacy of patient welfare, social justice and patient autonomy (Kirk, 2007).

This why many orthodontists and dentists retire at an older age.they spend so much time in school and in residency to gain the experience they feel they need After the required years of college, which is eight, dentists will already have four years of experience, and orthodontists will have
