The constellation that I chose is the Orion's Belt. I have chosen this constellation because of its orientation in the night sky. The myth behind the constellation is also intriguing to me. The Greek creation myth is one of my personal favorite. Orion's Belt is a group of three stars either vertically or horizontally aligned with each other. It usually disappears from the night sky when the Scorpion constellation appears. Orion's Belt's origin myth can be traced to Greek Mythology. Orion was the brother of two giants that had fought against the Olympian Gods and lost. Orion was a hunter and frequently went on hunts with Artemis, goddess of the hunt. Artemis was quite fond of Orion and spend a lot of time with him. This made Apollo, Artemis's …show more content…
twin, jealous. Apollo sent a scorpion to sting the heel of Orion while on a hunt. Orion killed the scorpion but not before he felt the sting of the scorpion. He died of the poisonous sting and while Artemis was enraged with her brother for killing Orion, she forgave him. Apollo was struck with grief over his part in Orion's death so he helped Artemis put Orion in his place in the heavens. Orion was the son of the great king Archon.
Orion had two other siblings, Daedelon and Helen. Daedelon and Orion were inseparable and frequently went on hunts together. One day Orion and Daedelon went into the forest. Orion saw a beautiful woman, bow in hand, as she moved through the forest as if she was gliding. This was the Goddess of the hunt, Artemis. As soon as Artemis saw Orion, she beckoned him to join her. As Orion looked back at his brother, then to Artemis he made his choice. He went with Artemis. As Daedelon saw his brother being led by Artemis, he shook with rage and called out to him. Orion paused, then turned around to face his brother. "Why are you leaving me brother?" shouted Daedelon. Orion merely shrugged and said "To be with Artemis." Daedelon was further enraged and threw the spear that he carried at Artemis. Orion was wide eyed with shock and his body seemed to move on his own. He leaped in front of Artemis, sacrificing his own life to save her. As he lay dying, Artemis leaned over him and said "Your courageous spirit will be forever remembered." Orion breathed his last and was no more. Artemis turned to Daedelon and said "What you have done will affect you for the rest of your life." So she turned Daedelon into a scorpion forever tormenting travelers and hunters alike. Artemis put Orion in the heavens where he can still be seen today. He burns bright in the night sky, but when he sees the scorpion coming he falters and fades as he sees his brother come

Constellations have helped many people for many years. Draco the Dragon is by far the coolest constellation in the sky. The things that make draco the dragon interesting is the facts and myths.
Escher’s Moebius Ring With Ants and the Greek Myth of Sisyphus both share the same theme: the meaning of life or the “futility and greatness of human existence“. In Camus’ tale, Sisyphus was sentenced to an eternity of rolling a rock uphill just for the weight of the rock to pull it back down. This redundant task was symbolic to Sisyphus’ many attempts to return back to earth. No matter how many times Sisyphus was forced back to the underworld, he relentlessly came up with a plan to escape again. Sisyphus’ “images of earth [clung] too tightly to memory” and caused him to be oblivious to his surroundings. Not in the sense that Sisyphus was unaware of where he was but in the sense that his “objective perspective” became more important and apparent
The constellation I have chosen is Ursa Major, specifically the Big Dipper within it. Ironically, Ursa Major is my favorite because of one of its many creation stories. Ursa Major is also known as the Great Bear, and lies in the northern hemisphere. It was one of the 88 constellations first recognized by the International Astronomical Union. It is also the third largest constellation in the sky. I recognize that the Big Dipper is not a constellation, this creation story is too good to pass up sharing. I love sharing it whenever I am camping with friends and the sky is clear enough to see it. This story is of Native American orgiin.
If there is one great constellation, it is the constellation of Gemini. As a Zodiac Constellation, it is only visible during parts of the year. It's two brightest stars, Castor and Pollux, give it the name of the Twins. Anyone born in the end of May until late June is said to have two faces: one of Pollux's and one of Castor's.
Perseus, the twenty-forth largest constellation, is depicted as a man holding a sword in one hand and the head of Medusa in the other. Ptolemy discovered the constellation during the second century. Measuring 28 degrees in length, it lies in the Northern Hemisphere and can be seen best in December around nine o’clock P.M. It can also be seen in the Southern Hemisphere during the summer from latitudes north of negative thirty-five degrees. The Mark of Athena, written by Rick Riordan, is a thrilling, suspenseful, and action packed book about seven demigods going on a dangerous quest to save the world. The seven main characters are Percy, the son of Poseidon, Jason, the son of Zeus, Annabeth, the daughter of Athena, Piper, the daughter of Aphrodite, Frank, the son of Mars, Leo, the son of Hephaestus, and Hazel, the daughter of Pluto. All of these seven demigods are a mix between Roman and Greek demigods. Since ancient history, the Romans and Greeks have hated each other. But in order to complete their quest, both Romans and Greeks must overcome their differences. The plot summary of the story starts out with Leo. As an eidolon, a possessing Greek spirit, takes over his body, he starts attacking the Roman camp. This action destroyed the little trust and respect that the Romans had for the Greeks. However, this was Gaea’s doing. Gaea is one of the oldest goddesses of all. She plans to take over the world and destroy mankind. Stopping this awakening goddess is the main mission for these demigods. As the demigods sail to the...
Ares was symbolize for many things. Many would say the main symbol of Ares was the spear. There are several adjectives that corrisponds with the spear and Ares. Ares loved war more than anything else. He also is natural a very violent person. In which case the spear is a very dangerous weapon. Another common symbol for Ares is a dog. I disagree with this anaylses because a dog symbolizes faith, loyalty, and protectiveness. These three adjectives are completely different with Ares. Instead he is more of the opposite of a
The tales of Greek heroes and the gods are older than all of us. Most of these tales are thought to be myths, but every interpretation of Greek mythology and the stories that it contains correlates with something in the real world today. The story of the creation of the world, and the stories of the heroes Hercules, Perseus and Theseus, are only but a few of the compelling stories Greek mythology has to offer.
made him kill his wife and children. In horror and remorse at what he did,
The Orion Nebula contains one of the brightest star clusters in the night sky. With a magnitude of 4, this nebula is easily visible from the Northern Hemisphere during the winter months. It is surprising, therefore, that this region was not documented until 1610 by a French lawyer named Nicholas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc. On March 4, 1769, Charles Messier inducted the Orion Nebula, M42, into his list of stellar objects. Then, in 1771, Messier released his list of objects for its first publication in Memoires de l’Academie.1
Apollo was the standard model for male beauty. He was a beardless, muscular man with a perfect figure. Apollo is often found carrying a lyre, a type of harp, or a bow and arrow, which was his signature weapon. As mentioned before, the oracle at Delphi and the lyre were sacred objects to him. Some of Apollo’s trademark animals are the raven, dolphin, wolf, and hawk. Some other important symbols were the laurel branch and herdsman staff. The laurel branch came from an important myth that is a highlight of Apollo’s
She also became exposed to caring and helping others at an early age, which is why she has such a strong desire to care for others. Artemis was also the goddess of virginity, and the legend of Artemis and Orion perfectly depicts that. She only saw Orion as her hunting partner when she accidentally killed him; her brother had tricked her into doing it. The moon was associated with Artemis because she has a caring and feminine nature, but she can also react in anger and rage. The story of Artemis killing Niobe’s children when Niobe insulted her mother is a perfect example of this trait. When thinking of a strong, independent, and protective goddess that cared for others with great power, didn’t need a man in order to complete her, and defended others and herself intensely, Artemis is one that comes to mind for
Who is Artemis? Some believe that she is a harbinger of Death and wickedness, other believe she protects the weak and the young. Whether or not Artemis is good or evil is unclear. However, what is clear are her intentions. Artemis was the child of Zeus and Leto, she has a twin brother Apollo, whom she shares many similarities with. Artemis and Apollo were said to work alongside each other (whether or not they were married is unclear), their overall bond allowed them to complete their duties as god and goddess in a more streamlined manner. Artemis is a very confusing goddess overall! She had done things throughout her time that were both seen as good and evil and many stories were told very differently. Artemis is perceived as good due to her
Zeus through his thunderbolt with all his strength and as it flew through the air, Phaethon though his last thought as the thunderbolt struck him killing him instantly. In greek Mythology some important lessons are in Daedalus and Icarus the moral is to always listen to the advice given to you by the people you trust. In the myth Phaethon the moral is to never lie to people or it's the consequences that will hurt the most. In the myth Arachne the moral is to never bragg because the consequences that will be fatal.
