I want to be an Orientation Peer Advisor or Panther Camp facilitator because I would like to have the opportunity to help freshmen start their first year of College with enthusiasm and joy. I would like to see them smile and relieved knowing that I am here to support them. Just a few months ago, back July 2015, I was that freshman. I was terrified at the idea of leaving home and moving to college but the minute that I stepped into the GC ballrooms, something changed. My day was transformed by the welcoming environment and all the smiling faces that I saw around the room. Although it happened gradually, I ended up loving the campus and not afraid at all. Throughout the long walks I had with my Peer Advisor, Satchel Mede, I discovered the beauty of the campus. Somehow, she reassured me with her smile, enthusiasm and excitement that I was going to be okay. My worries about being in college disappeared during those two days. I was so excited, inspired and motivated that I wanted to do everything right away. I signed up for Panther Camp and there, I had the time of my life. Panther Camp was the key that smoothed the way into my first semester at FIU. I learned so much at Panther Camp about the school, the residential life, the FIU fight song, the clubs, and opportunities for involvement. I was at Fort Benning Georgia in August 1988 to attend jump school. I had done my basic training here four years earlier with Sgt. Smith who would be my black hat true instructor for airborne school. I was standing in formation at five in the morning. It was cold now, but Georgia has hot, humid daytime temperatures that were draining mentally and physically for a student from Northern California. I knew I wanted to be here even though there would be physical and mental stresses, challenges and the possibility of serious Injury. The students would be weeded out at every point. I did not want it to happen to me. During my four years in the Army, I learned that I like to be an independent, resourceful, goal oriented problem solver. In the infantry, I had to obey the orders and not think for myself. Uniformity in everything was demanded.
“Do I have to go? I mean, it’s not required for me to finish high school or anything. It’s just something you want me to do,” I pleaded with my parents. “Yes you have to go and there’s no way you’re going to get out of it either. It’ll be a good experience for you, and you might even make some new friends,” my father replied. Tomorrow I was going to HOBY, which stands for Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar. It is specifically for sophomores in high school and I was chosen to be one of the candidates to represent my school for the year twenty fifteen. There are many HOBYs around the United States, but I was going to HOBY Ohio West located at the Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. The seminar started on June fourth and concluded on the seventh. This was a four day event and I wouldn’t see my family for two of the days. I had just turned sixteen in April and I had never stayed more than an hour away from my family for a night or two. It was very nerve-wracking for me, but I had to go no matter what. Little did I know that this experience would make me into the more confident young woman I am today.
I genuinely believe that peer interaction is a vital component in the development of academics as well as character in which I have the skill set and experience to do so. Growing up in a diverse and culturally rich community exposed me to various personalities and constructed me to undergo everything with an open mind. My unique background will expand the boundaries of the Honors Program with the incorporation of my personal experiences. With my strong work ethic and my willingness to explore a vast scope of courses, I can be an integral influencer in peer-to-peer learning environments. My preparation for every course beforehand assures my ability to participate and contribute during each class. I am always on top of my workload which proves that I would be an active student in classroom discussions and have thorough development in my research opportunities. I will be the thermostat in this program by setting the emotional and personal climate and setting examples for other students with a vision that we will all strive for the extra mile inside and out of the classroom. My passion to learn and the dedication I hold to my studies exemplify the type of student needed in this program. I hold the ambition that is needed to be successful in the Honors Program at the University of Georgia.

Summer term 2016 was the very first time I was considered a college student who attended Florida International University or any university for that matter. I was nervous, intimidated by the drastic changes that were about to occur in my life. As a first semester freshman I did not know what the college life held for me and did not want to. During the past three years of college, my interest in counseling has been affirmed through a variety of experiences. One important experience that influenced my decision to pursue a career as a school counselor was my involvement in my community service sorority, Chi Delta Alpha. Through Chi Delta Alpha, I volunteered on several occasions, among them I babysat children to provide parents with a night off; I was responsible for a group of elementary students as they experienced college classes and I painted a caboose for a local playground. A theme that has remained constant throughout all my different experiences is that making a difference in a person’s life is a rewarding experience, and I know that I desire a career that enables me to support high school students as they face difficult situations.
My first two weeks on campus were great. When I first walked on to the campus, it felt very foreign like I was in another country. I didn’t feel connected yet and still felt like a visitor. Most of the time I didn’t know exactly where I was going and of course, I didn’t want to look like a freshman. Eventually, I did find where I was going, after going to Cajun connection.
In August of 2014, I began my college career at Columbia College; as a Midland Valley High School alum, I quickly thrust myself into a new environment. Columbia College is a private, and small, women’s college planted in the Richland County school district, a short eight minute drive from the University of South Carolina. Upon entering, I became active in many on-campus organizations, such as NAACP, Alpha Beta Tau, and much more; I attempted to leave my reserved self in the past. My last year there, sophomore year, I worked as a desk assistant for the freshman dormitory, leaving me with adequate time to work on my, seemingly, mounds of homework. I enrolled in USCA in the fall of 2016. I have, adamantly, decided to stick with my biology major,
I have participated in the school’s marching band for four years has a member of the color guard. The last two years I have even earned a leadership position. From being in marching band, I have learned the ability to look for a bigger picture in things. For instance, something that may not seem clear now may take a true shape in time. I have also gained working experience through my two lifeguarding jobs from the last three years. I have learned how “size up” a situation and see how to properly deal with a problem. I have also learned, through both commitments, how to time manage myself and both achieve in activity/work and in school. I believe that through these experiences, I can bring a different perspective to the Honors Program’s community and help better it in any way possible.

I had no problems transitioning into college life and had no doubts that I made the right choice. College life at FSU was everything I expected. High school was fun, but nothing compared to the college life and how I felt at Florida State.
As the end of my senior year in high school approached, I had to make an important decision. What school was I going to spend the next few years of my life at? When the financial aid packages arrived, I was torn between two colleges. After sitting down with my mother and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of both schools, I came to my final decision. It seemed like a year ago I was imagining what college life would be like and suddenly before my eyes, I would be a college student in a matter of four months.
I want to be able to provide guidance and support, as well as fun opportunities such as the Freshmen Flotilla and Bedtime Stories, in order to foster a sense of community amongst students and faculty. I have noticed that many of my friends that I lived with the Honors dorm who moved to live off campus have become disconnected with the community of the Honors College, and I would love to make an impact by keeping older students involved. I hope that I will be also be able to impact USC helping make the student population grow through helping to encourage prospective students to come here and answer any questions they have that might cause hesitation or delay. Through the last 13 weeks I have learned about whom I am and what makes me who I am. I have made some great friends not only my age but also older and younger than me. I have realized many things about myself that I never would have realized if I wouldn’t have came here. College is a whole new experience that you could never imagine unless you are there.
