Dorothea Orem published Nursing Concepts of Practice in 1971, in which she explained her theory of nursing the Self-Care Theory. Self-Care Theory established Orem’s as the leading theorists in nursing practice and education. Orem’s has published many other paper, spoke at conferences and workshops around the world, and received many awards for her contributions. Orem’s was inducted into American Academy of nursing and nursing honor society. Orem’s believed that people have natural ability to self-care and nurses need to focus on promoting these abilities. Although there are many theorist that have influenced nursing Orem’s theory of Self-Care helps maintain patient’s abilities to stay in their own homes. Dorothea Orem was born …show more content…
This focuses on patient’s actions to meet their own self-care demands. Orem’s used these assumptions and evaluations to build the frame work of her nursing career. Orem’s initial definition of nursing concerns included “man’s need for self-care action and the provision and management and health, recover from disease or injury and cope with their effects” (Orem, 1959, p.3). Orem’s basic definition of nursing goals was “overcoming human limitations” (Orem, 1959, p.4). Orem’s theory of self-care is made up of three related theories; 1.) Theory of self-care, 2.) Theory of self-care deficit, and 3.) Theory of nursing systems. According to Orem’s “the three part theory focuses not on individual, but on persons in relations. Each of the three theories has as its focus a specific dimension of the person: the theory of self-care focuses on the self, the I, the theory of self-care deficit on you and me, the theory of nursing systems on we, persons in community (Orem, 1990, p.49). The self-care theory assess the ability to engage in self-care by assessing age, gender, developmental stage, …show more content…
Orem’s theory is significate in that it shows that all patients want to care for themselves, making recovery more quickly, preforming their own self-cares as much as they can. Assessing the universal, developmental, and health deviation requisites ensures that each patient is receiving individual cares and achieving patient appropriate outcomes. Orem’s theory utilize the assessment, diagnosis, implementation, and evaluation that is used in all health care settings to promote health maintenance. Although there are many theories that have influenced the nursing process, Orem’s self-care theory is straight forward but generalized enough to apply to a wide variety of
... Through the demonstration of these values on a daily basis, the nurse is able to not only take better care of his or her patients, but is also able to take care of his or herself. Through self-care, the nurse is able to better understand the phenomena of the client, and is able to provide better client-centered care.
Every person’s needs must be recognized, respected, and filled if he or she must attain wholeness. The environment must attuned to that wholeness for healing to occur. Healing must be total or holistic if health must be restored or maintained. And a nurse-patient relationship is the very foundation of nursing (Conway et al 2011; Johnson, 2011). The Theory recognizes a person’s needs above all. It sets up the conducive environment to healing. It addresses and works on the restoration and maintenance of total health rather than only specific parts or aspect of the patient’s body or personality. And these are possible only through a positive healing relationship between the patient and the nurse (Conway et al, Johnson).
This approach is based on four principles which are; to teach patients to assume their responsibility, to be well informed about their prevailing health issues, make them realize that their cooperation and willingness in treatment and prevention plan is in their own benefit and, let them take their own decisions. As narrated by Taylor (2006), Dorothea E. Orem's Self-care deficit theory of nursing emphasize that "People should be self-reliant and responsible for their
I chose to do a concept analysis on ‘Self-Care.’ The nursing theory that uses this concept is Orem’s theory of nursing. This theory is a grand theory and consists of three minor interrelated theories; self-care, self-care deficit, and nursing systems. (Parker & Smith 2010). Orem defines self-care as when an individual initiates activities and performs to maintain life, health and well-being on their own and self-care deficit as not meeting adequate self-care requisites which include “limitations for knowing, deciding and producing care to self or dependent. (Parker & Smith, 2010)
Throughout this philosophy paper, I have explored what nursing is based on my personal values and beliefs as it relates to the body of work in nursing. I value the importance of holistic nursing and the care of patients being individualized for them and their family. Also, effectively collaborating among health care professionals to ensure quality care for patients. Additionally, the importance of health promotion as one of the main roles of nurses is being a teacher, since promoting health prevents illness and increases the level of health in clients. These principles will serve as a guide for my personal standards of nursing practice.
The nursing theories that are currently in place in the emergency room to promote professional growth and development are vital; however, there are other nursing theories that could be implemented to help improve professional growth and development. A theory that should be implemented to more effectively promote professional growth and development is Orem’s theory of self-care deficit. Orem’s theory is considered a “realistic reflection on nursing practice” (McEwen & Wills, 2014, p. 146). If the nurse is not taking care of him or herself, “stress [can] accumulate [and the] nurse can … become angry, exhausted, depressed, and sleepless” (Ruff & Hoffman, 2016, p. 8). By the nurse having these feelings he or she is not able to take care of him

Self-care has a very different meaning for people. It varies from person to person and can be based on age, gender, religion, occupation, and their type of lifestyle that they live. For myself, my self-care has changed since starting nursing school and I now know have to look at it in terms of nursing. Although my self-care has not changed substantially I now have to realize that being a nurse, I will have more responsibility’s and will be taking care of others and I cannot take care of others until I take care of myself. Self-care is very important for many reasons; in my opinion a healthy person in mind, body and soul is a happy person. You cannot take care of others if you yourself are not healthy and happy.
The concept of person needs to be explored to go into further depth with the remaining concepts of the metaparadigm of nursing. Person refers to the person undergoing nursing care which includes individuals, families, groups, and communities (MacIntyre & McDonald, 2014, p.63). It is evident that each person may be unique with different biological, psychological, social, and spiritual depth (Thorne, 2010, p.66). Therefore, it is necessary for nurses to realize that each person at the centre of any nursing care will experience different feelings in regards to their body as a whole. The theorist, Parse, defines the concept of person as being “linked to an unfolding process, the relating of value priorities, meaning, and quality of life” (Wu, 2008, p.6). Also those human beings are free and choose in situations that arise from personal experience and becoming with the universe (Thorne, 2010, p.71). The nurses’ role in regards to this theory is to act encourage individuals in their human becoming process. Wu (2008) looks at the p...
One of the theories of nursing is Dorothea Orem’s self-care theory, also called the self-care deficit theory. Nursing theories are important for several reasons. The profession is strengthened when knowledge is built on sound theory (Black, 2014). Theory is important for reasoning, thinking, decision-making, and supporting excellence in practice (Black, 2014). Dorothea Orem’s theory is a conceptual model that provides a structure for critical thinking in the nursing process (Black, 2014). A conceptual model provides a comprehensive and holistic perspective of nursing (Black, 2014). Orem published her theory in 1959 and continued to develop her model, eventually formalizing three interrelated theories: theory of self-care, theory of self-care deficit, and theory of nursing system (Black, 2014). The focus of Orem’s model is the patient’s self-care capacity. The process helps to design a nursing process specific to each patient that will provide for the self-care deficit of the patient (Black, 2014). Self-care deficits exist when the patient has limitations and the self-care requirement is greater than he patient’s capacity (Manzini & Simonetti, 2009).
Nursing entails self- directed and cooperative health care for the society at large in all contexts. It includes the promotion of appropriate practices to enhance health, prevention of diseases,
Self awareness in nursing refers to how glowing nurses comprehend themselves, their strengths, weaknesses, attitude and ethics in order to better transact with their patients. Self- awareness includes review of self, together with self confidence. Self -regulation express beyond one`s emotion and being trustworthy. For nurses to be able to empathize with their patients and treat them with compassion, they have to be self aware. When nurses are self aware, they are capable to adapt to, or certainly change their attitudes and deed in order to understand how unusual people take care of them hence improving the nurse- patient relationship. Nurses must reflect carefully on whether they can sustain in dependence in caring for a client and whether the relationship interferes with gathering the client’s needs. It is also essential to be sure that providing care to family and friends does not interfere with the care of other clients or with the dynamics of the health care group. Before making the conclusion, the nurse may possibly wish to discuss the situation with colleagues and the employer.
There are three primary concepts in the SCDNT. The concepts are self-care, self-care deficit and nursing systems (McEwen & Wills, 2011). In addition, authors McEwen and Willis breaks down Orem’s self-care theory with several requisites. They are universal, developmental, health deviation and therapeutic (McEwen & Wills, 2011). Plus, concepts of deliberated action and product of nursing are defined.
The American Nursing Association defines nursing as ““protection, promotion, and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (American Nurse Association, 2011, p. 7). There is so much more to nursing as a whole moreover throughout this paper I will be examining my own personal nursing philosophy, which is what I believe is the core characteristics of nursing, the approach of my nursing philosophy, along with my belief and value system of caring, compassion, advocacy, respect, honesty and integrity. I will be discussing my choice of becoming a nurse, what
