Recommended: Musical performance analysis

An orchestra concert is a show where people perform their music pieces to people like their parent, friends, or others. I had the same thing on May fifth. During that night, groups of students from sixth, seventh, and eighth played pieces the director, Mr. Dean chose. My classmates and I had many improvements from the year before but some mistakes were included. Instead of first telling what the groups or the group I was in I want to start out with saying what I did. First, I maintained the tempo Mr. Dean waved with his baton well because I listened to the orchestra.     I attended the Missouri Western Jazz Ensemble concert on February 3. I can thoroughly say I enjoyed the performance. For being a rather small band, less than twenty members, they certainly packed a very large sound. To me the band sounded as though it was very well rehearsed. There seemed no lack of confidence in there playing; you could tell they knew and enjoyed playing the songs. All of these factors made it very entertaining to watch this ensemble.

    I have been to many different concerts throughout my life but this year I experienced two exceptionally unique ___ that I had never seen before. The first one was a spectacular chamber recital that took place at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed by pianist Yefim Bronfman and violist-violinist Pinchas Zukerman. The program included Schubert's Violin Sonatina No. 2 in A Minor, Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 7 in C Minor, and Brahms’ Viola Sonata No. 1 in F Minor. The second was a performance by the notable quartet “Anonymous 4” presented by the Universality of Chicago at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. The program included a series of medieval French motets from the 13th Century French polyphony, taken from the Montpellier Codex. The two performances were extremely different in nature and but at the same time very similar in what they were trying to achieve. For instance, while the first concert consisted entirely of an instrumental performance, the other was exclusively vocal.     Everyone else seemed to walk in with a phone in their hand verses a notebook, thus made me feel a sense of awkwardness and feeling that I was taking this too seriously. Despite the awkward vibe I got from others as they watched me take two pages of notes over the five albums of music was something I eventually learned to ignore and laugh at. I can’t put enough emphasis on how I really enjoyed getting into it and letting the music clear my mind and sooth my thoughts by taking note on how each piece made me think of short stories that would go with each one. I regret one thing though and that was not bringing a jacket. It was absolutely freezing in the auditorium and the little side chatter from others talking seemed to interrupt the process of enjoying the beauty of the classical music. I couldn’t smell much for the girl sitting to the right of me had just lathered herself in perfume and it just masked everything around me. Another thing I couldn’t help but to take note of was how disrespectful some students where. Two of them didn’t care to turn their phones off and the majority of the rest of the audience, in which am assuming must not have been enjoying the performance, decided to quietly walk out as the sets changed.     For this concert report I chose to go to a performance of student composers held at the Kimball Recital Hall. I chose this one because I wanted to see some of the talent that my peers have in the music realm, and also it was one of the only concerts I have been able to attend because I usually work at night. I cannot imagine creating something as complex as a musical composition, much less actually performing it, so this aspect of the concert was particularly awe-inspiring.
