One of the essential concepts in the novel Candide is the lack of optimism the protagonist, Candide, has. Pangloss, his mentor, and philosopher, teaches him that “everything is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.” This idea was first introduced in the first chapter and is repeated throughout the novel. In the first chapter, the quote is written when describing the castle and the bareness, before Candide is banished for kissing Miss Cunegund.
