The apartheid in South Africa was stopped by Nelson Mandela, Oprah Winfrey, a talk show owner/host, was an inspiration to millions, and the World Wide Web was invented. This decade was a time of change, and innovation.

During the 1990s, many places in the world went through dramatic changes. South Africa was one of these places. From 1948-1994 South Africa was going through the apartheid, which is a system of racial segregation. One man would not only stop, but make South Africa a better place. An amazing woman dedicated to her work, and the first female African-American to own and host a television show. Oprah Winfrey had a tough childhood, but when she moved in with her dad at age 12, he helped her turn her life around. When she was a sophomore at TSU (Tennessee State University), she became the first African-American girl to anchor local news. From that time she knew she wanted to be in the television industry, and help people. Later on she began the "Oprah Winfrey show” in 1986, at age 32. By 1994, her show already had 17 million viewers. In 1991, there was a story of a 4 year old girl who was molested and murdered. This story really hurt Oprah Winfrey, because of her experiences as a child, so after hearing it, she stood up for children by creating the National Child Protection Act to help prevent child abuse in 1994. This was only one example of many kind things she did. Throughout the decade Oprah Winfrey was known (and still is) for her endless kindness and the way she connected with viewers on her show. Throughout her career she wrote a book called "Connection," and donated to many organizations and institutions. Because of the way she affected millions with her show talks, book clubs, and her book she wrote, Oprah Winfrey was adored, and won many awards. Some include an Emmy award for Best Talk Show and Best Talk Show Host, 1994, she was named one of "America's 25 most Influential People of 1996,” by Times Magazine, nominated for a People's Choice Award for Female Television Performer, 1997, and was even nominated to be in the Television Hall of Fame in 1994. History remembers Oprah Winfrey today as a kindhearted, selfless, giving woman. After endless donations, relatable television shows, and her loving attitude, people remember her as an amazing person.
