India is well known to be one of the countries where gender equity is far from being reached. For specific constraints like cultural, social, economic and legal factors that will be explained later on, women are seen as secondary in the society. If one takes a look at the Declaration of Human Rights , one can see that women in India don’t fully have all their legitimate human rights: A few example we could give would be the right to safety, the right to marriage and family (and therefore, no forced marriage) and the right of a fair trial where one is innocent until proven guilty. This oppression against women can be seen everywhere. Therefore, one would have to step on those traditional values in order to see the growth of human development in the country. As seen in the lectures, this is a strong critique of international development: In our era of the incredible time-space compression that is globalization, is changing the traditions in a country for the sake of development is a synonym of cultural homogenization? Taking to the end such values could mean that international development is an imposition of Western values. It might seem like it, but in the case that millions of little Indian girls are thrown away at birth, aborted or raped through out their life, it’s time to take action and make some change. If one would wish for a bottom-up approach for development, the first step in India is gender equity. This social disparity must disappear. The issue seen with international development is that this situation is very touchy. From a historical perspective, India has a past of colonization by England. As we can see that through colonial technologies , cultures, values, social norms and such are almost always taken to the ground by the colonializing west. Colonialism is already seen as a human rights violation, as a crime against humanity, therefore development in India must note be
