The Vietnam War took place on 1st November 1955; it was a war between north and South Vietnam. This war also included America, which was on South Vietnams side. The events that took place during the Vietnam war- in 1960 the Vietcong was formed by north Vietnam, this was led by the following events of operation chopper(January 12th 1962)- operation chopper was the first combat mission for America against the Vietcong. American helicopters transported over 1,000 South Vietnamese paratroopers for an assault on a Vietcong stronghold, around 10 miles west of Saigon. The Vietcong were not ready for the attack, and were easily defeated. A year after this attack the battle of Ap Bac commenced on 2nd of January 1963. This battle was fought …show more content…

The aim of the operation was to eradicate or get rid of the so called ‘iron triangle’, a massive stronghold of the Vietcong’s. This operation began January 8th 1967. This was the largest American ground operation of the whole Vietnam War. This operation involved 30,000 American and south Vietnamese troops. However, the Vietcong evaded this massive search and destroy, by escaping across the border to Cambodia or hiding in a intricate system of underground tunnels. The allies destroyed some of the tunnels, and also destroyed large stockpiles of the Vietcong’s supplies. Sources say that the cause of the war was that by having president Johnson deploy troops in Vietnam, is considered to of started the war. Other sources say that by having Ho Chi Minh defeat the French forces, Vietnam was split into two- South Vietnam and North Vietnam. Secondary sources say that it is estimated that 282,000 allied troops were killed, 444,000 Vietcong were killed, and 627,000 civilians were murdered. Resulting in 1,353,000 deaths in total. in this event the positives were that we learned how to fight wars better than before and to create better strategies, and the negative effects of the events were that it was a massive loss of lives, and that it was all caused by government, and that the effects from the Vietnam war will always be remembered.
Overall, to society, this event would have been considered useless and a major loss of lives. And the legacy of the event left over time would be that it was a bloody war that was fought hard, but many lives were lost. And that the legacy of the soldiers will always be

At this point in time, the U.S. public supported the dispatch because the Vietnam War had been portrayed to the American people as a war against the spread of Communism. Johnson was president at the time and he kept adding more and more troops as the war went on. As the draft quotas increased, the American public protests started. When Nixon came into presidency his policy towards the Vietnam War was "peace with honor" in other words he wanted to widen the war. After more bombing and fighting, on January 27, 1973 the Paris Peace Accords was signed, restoring peace in Vietnam and U.S. forces pulled out. Nixon stopped all American attacks on Vietnam. The condensed summary of the Vietnam War is to see what presidents were involved in this war (Johnson, and Nixon) and what foreign policies were taken towards Vietnam mostly before the protests began.
