Online Dating

A few years ago, I was given my first computer and was introduced to the World Wide Web, and America Online (AOL) chat rooms. It never occurred to me that I would meet someone online that I would consider being in a relationship with, nor talk to more than a few times. I thought wrong.

In today's society where almost anything and everything is done online, online dating is not an uncommon or taboo thing to do anymore. There are numerous websites with billions of subscribers, who pay up to forty dollars a month, looking for their perfect matches. A few for examples would be: Match.com, Eharmony.com, FaceTheJury.com, Yahoo Personals, chat rooms, and the list continues. These websites let people create detailed profiles about themselves for others to read. Eharmony.com and Match.com actually create matches of the most compatible members, and then allow them to make contact and begin relationships. Free dating websites like FaceTheJury.com leave the match making up to their members.

Three years go I was in an AOL chat room, when a boy named Rob, Instant Messaged (Imed) me. We talked for hours everyday and became good friends. After about 6 months he suggested we have an online relationship. I thought the whole idea of having an online boyfriend was silly, but since I was so naive about the whole thing, I agreed. When I told my friends and family that I had become interested in someone who lives in Connecticut, that I had met online, everyone had a different opinion about it. My parents were skeptical because "everyone online is crazy and /or is a murderer". But after I told them everything I knew about Rob, they became more accepting. Some of my friends actually found Internet boyfriends of their own.

It is also not as hard to be rejected or reject someone online because you can avoid face-to-face contact. Another plus about meeting people online is the wide variety, so you can get to know numerous people at once. As I said before there are billions of people who subscribe to dating websites.

In conclusion, online dating has become a positive issue in my life. I believe meeting Rob was a great experience, although he is no longer my "online boyfriend", we are best friends and still talk everyday. Besides the horror stories of people being raped and killed by their internet mates, online dating today is a safe and effective way for people who want to find love, or just a friend, to do so.
