Away from Tradition
Tradition is losing its value; people want to experience new things rather than the same routine. In One Perfect Rose, Dorthy Parker changes the emotional feel the readers get from the beginning, then how it is towards the end of the poem. Emphasizing how she is tired of the traditional rose and hints her admirer in breaking away from the perfect rose. Her love story impacts how she wrote and definitely resembles in the poem. She also uses imagery and repetition to get her message clear on leaving the typical rose behind. For instance, the use of diction that portrays fascination is expressed at the beginning of the poem. A perfect rose states that the speaker is delighted in receiving that type of attention and is grateful. “The opening stanza describes the one perfect rose the speaker’s love has sent with all the standard romantic cliches and attitudes: uses the poetic language of the flower shop in its note to express his love.” (Francavilla1). By stating that it sounds like a sweet and caring action that many women would die if they were given a perfect rose once in awhile. It also shows that she is appreciative because she calls it the perfect rose.

In this poem Larkin uses a nonchalant tone to talk about his disappointing love life. Firstly the way he describes the women shows he only focuses on approaches rather than the person themselves- “a bosomy English rose/and her friend in specs I could talk to”. The fact that the persona used a separate line after the latter line to describe “her friend in specs” shows that the persona sees the friend in specs as inferior based on her appearance. This is because the noun “specs” has connotations of someone less attractive, especially when compared to a “bosomy English rose”. However this nonchalant tone changes later on in the poem. The persona shows emotion in the fact that he “gave a ten Guinea ring” to the “friend in specs”who left him. The fact that the persona only focuses on the material aspects of love shows how love has disappointed him. This also shows that his love life has been an annoyance to him, in the fact that he had to give something up (in this case a “ten Guinea ring”) to get something in return that he was displeased with. Rose Mary is a selfish woman and decides not to go to school some mornings because she does not feel up to it. Jeannette takes the initiative in making sure that her mother is prepared for school each morning because she knows how much her family needs money. Even though Rose Mary starts to go to school every day, she does not do her job properly and thus the family suffers financially again. When Maureen’s birthday approaches, Jeannette takes it upon herself to find a gift for her because she does not think their parents will be able to provide her with one. Isolation dominated the seventy four-year life of Emily Grierson in 'A Rose for Emily' by William Faulkner. Never in this story did she live in harmony with anyone one short time. Even when she died of age at seventy four, people in Jefferson town rushed into her house not because they wanted to say goodbye forever to her but because they wanted to discover her mystic house. Many people agreed that it was the aristocratic status that made Emily?s life isolated. And if Emily weren?t born in the aristocratic Grierson, her life couldn't be alienated far away from the others around her.
There are many different themes that can be used to make a poem both successful and memorable. Such is that of the universal theme of love. This theme can be developed throughout a poem through an authors use of form and content. “She Walks in Beauty,” by George Gordon, Lord Byron, is a poem that contains an intriguing form with captivating content. Lord Byron, a nineteenth-century poet, writes this poem through the use of similes and metaphors to describe a beautiful woman. His patterns and rhyme scheme enthrall the reader into the poem. Another poem with the theme of love is John Keats' “La Belle Dame sans Merci,” meaning “the beautiful lady without mercy.” Keats, another nineteenth-century writer, uses progression and compelling language throughout this poem to engage the reader. While both of these poems revolve around the theme of love, they are incongruous to each other in many ways.
The title itself is the first hint of symbolism that is shown throughout this short story. A rose is most often used as a symbol for love in which case during this story Homer is the "rose" for Emily, or also known as the love for Emily. Emily's father was a man who never allowed or agreed to any many being good enough for his daughter. Because of this, Emily was never able to experience love until the day she met Homer. A rose is also able to symbolize silence. This can be interpreted throughout the story that Homer was still Emily's rose, but then known as her "secret." Emily cherished and loved Homer and kept him to herself after his body was corrupted throughout time. Many women dry out roses in order to keep them forever. Emily was known to have a distorted and out of the ordinary mind, and with this said, she wanted to keep Homer forever by "drying out her rose." The speaker personifies the flower by describing how the moon-lily sings: “…it is singing—very far/ but very clear and sweet” (10-11). The voice of the flower is the voice of the woman. The flower is calling out to the man. The fact that the flower has to call out to the man implies that he does not accept the love of the woman. The speaker also describes the distance between the two people. He states, “The voice is always in some other room” (12). Once again the speaker is describing distance, but the man does not try to close the distance. The reason the man does not try to close the distance is because he does not love the woman. The lily represents the female and their love. In the poem, the speaker talks about a “garden” which is a metaphor for the female’s life (13). In the garden the speaker describes the flower as “in bloom” and that the flower “stands full and/ proud” (13,14-15). This section of the poem tells the reader that the woman’s love is strong and unwavering. The speaker compares the woman’s love to a lily because the love is pure of heart and beautiful. In contemporary times, the rose also symbolizes emotions like love and friendship. The rose symbolizes dreams of romances and lovers. These dreams belong to women, who like Emily Grierson, have yet to experience true love for themselves.
The rose is very fragile and needs constant care. Love is not a matter of choice; it is a matter of consequence; indeed, it is a matter of survival. Men must learn to love one another or expire. Love is what gives life meaning. The little prince's love for his rose is so important to him that his love gives the author's life purpose and direction.
