In the close reading that the class read. I caught the usage of metaphors,hyperbole's, Idioms,repetition,personification all in the reading. He also used the themes that we were to focus on. They all flowed together into the close reading. The themes being dreams can either save or destroy a person's,Values and ideas are worth fighting for,We do not simply live for ourselves, but for those who came us and will come after us, and the last them used was Only through self-respect and self-esteem can people live with themselves. In the beginning of the story the first paragraph i said, “ But being the a calm and quiet young lady, she did not say anything, although the whole high school buzzed with rumors, guesses, reportedly authentic announcements on the part of students who had no right to be making announcements at all.” ( Hughes 2 ) I say that this quote fits the theme of only through self-respect and self-esteem can people live with themselves. I say this because she has gotten info from other that she has won the scholarship but she doesn't over react because she has the respect for herself. Another quote that hit me instantly that when I read it i knew of a theme that fits is when the principle was reading a message to her of why all of the sudden change of her not winning it had said, “ It seems to us wiser to arbitrarily rotate the award among the various high schools of the city from now on . And especially in this case since the student chosen happens to be colored, a circumstance which unfortunately, had we known, might have prevented this embarrassment. but there have never been any Negro students in the local art school....” ( Hughes 10 ). One example of the theme occurs when the author first introduces the story. “But the summer I was 9 years old, the town I had always loved morphed into a beautifully heartbreaking and complicated place.” (pg. 1). The author is saying that the year she turned nine, she found out something about her town that broke her heart and changed the way she saw it. This quote is important because it supports the theme. It shows that now she is older she has learned something about her town that made her wiser than when she was younger. She is now more informed because the new information changed her and caused her to begin to mature.
In this short, but charming story, Amy Tan uses imagery to bring the story to life. With figurative language, the reader is immersed into the Chinese culture and can better relate to the characters. Tan main use of imagery is to better explain each character. Often instead of a simple explanation, Tan uses metaphors, similes, or hyperboles to describe the person, this way they are more relatable and their feelings better understood.

Without using any of these things writing would be straight forward and not so complicated to understand. When figurative language is used it makes the reader really think about what is being said by the author and what point the author is trying to make. Melinda finds the theme through the tough parts of the book and learning how to get them. When everyone is mad at her for calling the cops at the party she tries to get over it, but she still doesn’t know why she did it. So when she realizes why she called the cops, because Andy Evans/IT raped her. Melinda finally finds her voice, she decides to tell someone about what happened, even though they didn't take it well. Everyone at her school finds out what Andy did to Melinda and sides with her. But yet again she is acquainted with Andy Evans, and Melinda was locked in a closet with him and he tried to fight her but she used her voice and said ‘no’. Words are definitely powerful than actions, and when Melinda said ‘no’ she left Andy when no words. When Melinda found her voice I don’t think that she could let anything stop her, by the end of the book she decides to tell someone who will actually listen.
