On becoming white As a European immigrant in the USA, I have encountered many new cultural phenomena in the last 4 _ years that have challenged me to perceive who I am differently. This experience has been even more polarized by the fact that I have lived most of that time in Los Angeles, a melting pot to be reckoned with. Coming to America, I expected these adaptations to my Irish self but the intensity of becoming cognizant of my label of 'whiteness' has mocked the limitations of my anticipations. This cognizance really ensued when I first started work as an educational therapist in a residential placement for severely emotionally disturbed teenage girls. Being in such a arbitrary position of power was difficult enough with people who have issues with control and lack of respect from elders but I also happened to be the only male ever in this position at the facility and a "white guy" to boot. Ninety percent of my clients happened to be Latina or African American. This ethnic flash point did not initially bother me because of my lack of awareness of its existence and my naive determination that it was not important for my therapeutic and educational goals. However, of course I had not really considered at that time what being 'white' really entails in this society. Consideration of one's identity is obviously key to successful educational and therapeutic interventions but it took the actual experience of being what I call "white-washed" to make me realize that skin color may actually have something important to do with one's perceived identity. The incident actually occurred in my home in a banal everyday interaction with a plumber who was fixing our shower. Firstly, the plumber who was Caucasian continually bombarded his younger, Latino assistant with racial insults mostly to the tune of "you stupid Mexican". When he realized that we were staring at his comments he explained that his assistant "gets it from his mother's side". This young man was in fact the plumber's son! He then went onto talking about how America is today, and how being a fellow American, I should understand that. Of course I immediately responded with: "I'm not American," to which he countered: "Oh! I thought you were white!.....I mean American." I think that this slip by the plumber reveals something of great importance about attitudes, assumptions and beliefs about ethnic identity that is very open to semiotic analysis.
Seventy percent of the US population now receives fluoridated drinking water, an industrial grade level chemical most commonly associated with the prevention of tooth decay, and in Virginia especially, 95.7% of all public water is fluoridated (CDC). I present this numbers to your concern because for something that is almost in all public drinking water, it is not informed to the average Virginia citizen, but that is not the primary issue I am addressing you for. My main matter of concern is that more recent studies performed by scientist in the US and abroad are now finally advocating decade old cautions back then just acknowledged as unsubstantial research or even myths on how rather potentially hazardous the fluoridation of water is for
Though each individual experiences life differently certain experiences link them together. Specifically, being a person of color while being a singular experience, is also a very universal when it comes down to the way in which minority groups are subject to the oppression of the white mainstream. The friction between being proud of one’s identity or choosing to ignore it and assimilate into society, is complex and is a fact that many people of color struggle with, because it is not easy to be proud of one’s identity when everything around them is telling them not to be, so in a sense these individuals see themselves in two ways, a minority proud of their identity, and then as an outsider in a white world where they feel as if they will never be accepted.
In the relevant course, CRD 2, I was made aware of a few different theories of social identity development, particularly pertaining to race. As I began to examine these theories, I sought out similarities, something that would catch my eye and make me think, “That applies to me.” Beverly Tatum’s ideas caught with me most easily, and I will elaborate on them shortly, but for the most part, I had to struggle to find one that seemed synonymous with who I am and how I see myself. The closest likenesses I could find were for the most part milder versions of the theory’s anecdotes, and I found it unnecessary to make myself conform to a theory exactly. While the theories are excellent material for reflection, and possibly even enlightenment, I assert that, considering the individuality of each person, it’s illogical to assume that every person can be categorized into a theory.
Fluoride in drinking water has been a hot topic in the past decade. Some communities are all for it and some are completely against it. With such a range of opinions on the matter some organizations have took it upon themselves to present the pros and cons of the fluoride to the public so they can make informed decisions. Often times these surveys are bias to one side or the other, so I shall be giving information on both sides of the issue, the future outlook, and my personal opinion in order to help inform you to decide on your own.
Whiteness is a term that has been discussed throughout history and through scholarly authors. Whiteness is defined in many ways, according to Kress “pervasive non- presence, its invisibility. Whiteness seems at times to be everywhere and nowhere, even present throughout U.S history, and yest having no definable history of its own. Whiteness as a historically rooted cultural practice is then enacted on the unconscious level. Knowledge the is created from the vantage point of Whiteness thus transforms into “common sense,” while practices or behaviors that are enacted based on the unspoken norms of Whiteness become the only acceptable way of being” (Kress, 2008, pg 43). This definition for example, whiteness has become into hegemony. I define it as racial ideologies that have been established throughout history. Which has formed racial segregation between white and non-whites, and has led to discrimination and injustice. White privilege has also been a factor in whiteness; it’s the privilege that white color people get better benefits
One source that supports this racism history is the reading of How White People Got Made (Race in the United States in historical perspective). in late 1600s, Virginians made a law of a new class of people into existence which were whites meaning that they gave them certain rights, and took other rights from blacks. In the mind of America whiteness and blackness were born as a language of race around the 1680s. Whites could not be permanently enslaved like before and black slaves could never work their way into freedom (2). White people believed that God had made the blacks inferior to the whites, the same way that whites were lower than to the superior classes that owned property and land. However, before they didn’t give whites political
Every person will identify themselves as having some sort of nationality. However, it is the conditions of classes and gender that affect the everyday lives of the individual. If the form of literature is an accurate reflection of public opinion, through the study of the novels The Wig My Father Wore, Anne Enright, and The Woman Who Walked into Doors, Roddy Doyle, we should see the terms by which contemporary Irish society identifies itself.
A wedding coordinator is definitely a must for taking that stress off your shoulders. You won’t have to fight tooth and nail for that wedding hall, or haggle with that wedding giveaway shop that doesn’t seem to know what they are doing. Your wedding coordinator will gladly take that bullet for you. However this doesn’t mean that you always have to leave your decisions to the wedding coordinator. For example, a wedding coordinator might have double-booked your wedding date and end up messing up your dates. Instead of saying that you totally understand and that it’s cool, let them know that you were disappointed and you would take your business elsewhere. Keep in mind that wedding coordinators juggle at least 4 weddings at a time so mistakes can happen. Once they see that you mean business and you’re not a push over, they’ll make things clearer next time and they might even offer your discounts you never knew existed. If you accept everything a wedding coordinator does, whether g...
For decades now, there have been debates on water fluoridation. This is the addition of fluoride to a public water supply for the purpose of reducing tooth decay and promoting oral health. Fluoride, a compound of the element fluorine and other metals is a mineral that is known to be safe and effective at preventing tooth decay.
In light of our class discussion about the light skin, dark skin dichotomy I decided to write about my perspective on the issue. Growing up I quickly found out the color of my skin impacted my life in a foremost way. In my childhood years I traveled a lot, but I spent the majority of my life in Jacksonville, Florida. Jacksonville is mildly diverse, especially in the area where my family and I lived. Moreover, the school I attended was predominantly white. With that being said, I was immersed into a setting where I could not culturally or ethnically relate to anymore. Furthermore, I found myself struggling with my identity. In school my peers and classmates would ask: “are you white?” Of course inside I knew who I was— I knew I was black; however, I began to lose sight of my ethnic background and ethnic identity. Furthermore, I found that it was harder for me to connect with people of my own race and ethnicity. Most of my friends where white; yet, I noticed that I was always stigmatized as the odd ball out with my “friends” and it was almost as if I was not good enough to be their f...
Provided by numerous federal agencies, public drinking water fluoridation is an exercise that has found widespread use in the U.S as well as other countries in the world. Through the prevention of tooth decay, fluoridation has been acknowledged as one of the most momentous disease-preventive measures taken in the last century. Fluoridation proponents see this implementation as an effective, safe, and cost efficient method to bring health to the general population. Nonetheless, those who oppose these views regard fluoridation of water to be a sort of mass medication and find it to be an immoral activity. On top of that, many support their views with unreliable evidence that links the practice of fluoridation to mouth difficulties such as enamel fluorosis and other illnesses. Water fluoridation should continue to be the leading method in the distribuition of fluoride to the general population because of its positive effects on the human body.
Some of the chemicals, such as chlorine and fluoride are actually added at the water plant. Chlorine is added to kill bacteria, viruses, and other living organisms in the water, but it is also linked to bladder, rectal, and breast cancer (West). Chlorine also produces dangerous by-products during the disinfection process such as, bromate and haloacetic acids, which are both cancer-causing agents according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (Alton). The other aforementioned chemical fluoride, is added to municipal water supplies to promote healthy teeth. Fluoride being added to our water has been a controversial subject since it began back in 1945. The results of many scientific studies, show high levels of fluoride to have a neurotoxic effect on brains (Connet). Researchers from Harvard School of Public Health and China Medical University in Shenyang combined 27 studies and found strong indications that fluoride may adversely affect cognitive development in children

The use fluoridated products by children and adults is extremely effective in reducing dental caries (World Health Organisation, n.d.). Brushing teeth twice a day using fluoridated toothpaste is an easy and manageable way to introduce fluoride into a community which does not have it in their drinking water.
