When a group Olympic Valley, California residents decided to start a petition to incorporate the community, property owners and local businesspersons immediately began debating the issue. Those in favor of incorporation wanted to make Olympic Valley into a town, so the community could govern itself by electing a town council. Those against incorporation claimed that the town wouldn't be able to afford to maintain services, such as snow plowing, that were essential to the community. Proponents of Olympic Valley's incorporation spend thousands of dollars to back the proposal, while opponents spent even more money to oppose the petition. An article published through the Reno-Gazette Journal, which summarized the debate, noted that Andy Wirth,
CEO of Squaw Valley Resort, spoke out against incorporation. In the end, the state's Local Agency Formation Commission determined that Olympic Valley's incorporation was not a fiscally sound proposal; therefore voters would not get to decide the issue. As CEO of Squaw Valley, Andy Wirth has a vested interest in what happens in the Olympic Valley community. As reported in Powder Magazine, Squaw Valley Ski Resort plans to build a gondola to connect skiers with Alpine Meadows, another ski resort owned by KSL Capital Partners, the owners of the Squaw Valley Resort. By connecting the two resorts, Andy's plan is to make the area a preeminent destination for up to 300,000 skiers annually. Fortunately, Andy Wirth was recently appointed chairman of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board, so, according to a news release in the Sierra Sun, Wirth will have chance to increase the number of Lake Tahoe tourists coming to ski by increasing the number of flights destined for the airport. It's hard to imagine that one man, who has a demanding job and serves as chairman of the airport board, can also find time to work with many community service organizations, but Andy Wirth manages to do this, and more. According to Wirth's website, he is now the CEO of Alpine Meadows Ski Resort, which gives him an additional way to focus on his passion; making the Lake Tahoe region a top tourist destination for winter sports.
The topic the essay is mainly talking about is whether to initiate the San Joaquin River Project. I am with Bill McEwen on his article, “River Plan Too Fishy for my Taste Buds.” I chose this author because I do not think the government should spend more money on the river rights project. The author convinced me that he is more credible and can be trusted by all the experience he has. The article was published in Fresno Bee on March 26,2009 and is surrounded by farms so the people there know what will happen if big businesses were to start a project. McEwen demonstrates how this project will impact the city in a negative way by stating ethos, logos, and pathos.
The growth of the railroad was one of the most significant components in economic growth. However, the railroads hurt small shippers and farmers. Competition between railroad companies required some way to win business. Many railroads offered rebates and drawbacks to larger shippers who used their railroads. However, this practice hurt smaller shippers, including farmers, for often times railroad companies would charge more to ship products short distances. The freight rates were a burden on the farmers (Doc F). So the farmers grouped together forming National Grange of Patrons of Husbandry to protest these outrageous rates. Even though the farmers felt protesting the rates was a benefit for them it was actually a benefit fo...
Years ago, there was once a small town called Chaves Ravine within Los Angeles, California and this town was a poor rural community that was always full of life. Two hundred families, mostly Chicano families, were living here quite peacefully until the Housing Act of 1949 was passed. The Federal Housing Act of 1949 granted money to cities from the federal government to build public housing projects for the low income. Los Angeles was one of the first cities to receive the funds for project. Unfortunately, Chavez Ravine was one of the sites chosen for the housing project, so, to prepare for the construction work of the low-income apartments, the Housing Authority of Los Angeles had to convince the people of the ravine to leave, or forcibly oust them from their property. Since Chavez Ravine was to be used for public use, the Housing Authority of Los Angeles was able seize and buy Chavez Ravine from the property owners and evict whoever stayed behind with the help of Eminent Domain. The LA Housing Authority had told the inhabitants that low-income housing was to be built on the land, but, because of a sequence of events, the public housing project was never built there and instead Dodgers Stadium was built on Chavez Ravine. Although Chavez Ravine public housing project was the result of the goodwill and intent of the government, rather than helping the people Chavez Ravine with their promise of low-income housing, the project ended up destroying many of their lives because of those in opposition of the public housing project and government mismanagement.
Footlocker’s marketing plan entails selecting the target market, integrating the best marketing tactic to reach as many customers as possible, and customer retention initiatives. Essentially, this customer-driven marketing blueprint is classified as the marketing concept, which does not rely heavily on promotions to procure sales. Instead, the company learns to pinpoint what the customer wants before he or she does, to accommodate existing and future needs. Moreover, within the past five years, a new store entitled House of Hoops has made its debut in the same mall as Footlocker, which has caused the veteran shoe store to experience a decline in sales. This suggests that Footlocker may need to modify its sales strategy to help the company attract more customers to the store. “House of Hoops has a variety of shoes, and a large store front,” stated the interviewee, “customers are drawn to the store because it is new and possesses a
After settlements were established, farmers opposed the government. The farmers united to form their opposing union that would lead their opposing movement and solve their common problems that they had with economic distress and railroads. The grange and farmers´ alliances surged with the quest to get the government to support them. The rise of the populist party caused a scare and panic to other government groups, but it didn´t last, the populist party collapsed.
California water war has been an great example of different cities fighting against each other since they all share the common characteristics of greed, and selfish. Back in the 1800’s, Los Angeles grew largely in populations when finally it outgr...
Since the first Olympic Games in 1896 winning the Olympics meant more than just a medal, it showed the power that the winning country possesses. Although the Olympics are meant to show peaceful amiability between all counties, geopolitics is still a factor in the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee President states “sport can only contribute to development and peace if it’s not used as a stage for political contest, have the courage to address your disagreements in a peaceful direct political dialogue and not on the backs of athletes.” Many historians ask if geopolitics was a factor in the Olympics during the Cold War era. The answer isn’t an opinion; geopolitics has never been absent in the Olympics and that is especially true for the Cold War. The Cold War was a battle for political power that will dominates the rest of the world. The idea that this was a battle for power explains the arms race, Korean War, Vietnam War and the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. Logically, this need to upstage the opposing super power leaked into international sports competition. With all this competition whirling around during the Cold War, the Olympics became a literal race against communism or democracy. As geopolitics played such a major role in the Olympics during the Cold War era, athletes’ fates were ultimately altered.
The Olympic Peninsula is in the upper northeast corner of Washington State. The Pacific Ocean, Strait of Juan de Fuca and Hood Canal border the extensive forests, mountains, and beaches that contributes to a pristine environment. Right in the center of the Olympic Peninsula is the Olympic National Park. President Franklin Roosevelt designated this area the Olympic National Park in 1938 after he acknowledged the need to preserve such unspoiled land. Unfortunately he made an effort far too late because settlers and entrepreneurs with industrialist ideologies made their mark on the untouched land in 1910.

Honestly, I was shocked by the story, but at the same time, I don’t know why I was shocked. The first detail that surprised me was how she described Swat. In the memoir, Malala describes Swat as the most beautiful place in the entire world. “My valley, the Swat Valley, is a heavenly kingdom of mountains, gushing waterfalls, and crystal-clear lakes…we have fields of wildflowers, orchards of delicious fruit, emerald mines and rivers full of trout.” (Yousafzai 15,16) I’ve always had this image in my head that the Middle East was this colossal wasteland and the fact that there are enthralling places with beautiful families shocked me. Although, I don’t know why I imagined it that way. I don’t know why I was shocked.

Los Angeles is unique in that it captures the essence of a multi-ecological setting bringing the ocean, the skyscraper, and the happiest place on earth under one rooftop. Its deep-rooted culture engulfs the city’s character and overwhelms the spirit of L.A. Los Angeles has encompassed the circle of the Mexican pueblo that began in 1848 and has returned over two hundred fifty years later. Hordes of “land hungry Anglo-Europeans” began to migrate to Los Angeles from various parts of Europe. They viciously took land from the inhabited Mexicans by fraud, force, and imposing ridiculous property taxes. Although Mexican rancheros fought gallantly for their land, they could not afford to pay the property taxes and as a result lost a vast part of their holdings. The Mexican ranchero lifestyle gradually vanished as new settlers took over. As the Anglo-whites became the majority in Los Angeles, they also became the major influence on the development of the city and its capitalist structure.
One day when I was thirteen, I was at my sister’s apartment in June. I had just woken up at 7:30am, and the kids were still sleeping. That day was the first day I took care of my nephew Adrian, and my nieces Sophia and Penelope. They were still sleeping, so I let them sleep. I sat there wondering how bad they would be when they woke up. When they did wake up it wasn’t as bad as I thought, but they did wake up hungry.
