To be completely honest I have heard of most of the Rock n Roll bands but know nothing more than a couple of their songs. I did not know anything about what era they were during or where they began. I simply heard their songs and though I enjoyed their music I did not know their background. Their background helps to understand their music. I found a couple of Rock n’ Roll bands that interested me.
The Beatles were originally from Liverpool, England. When I first saw Liverpool, I was thinking about the town here in the United States right next to Alvin. George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr changed the expected course of music for their decade. Instead of following the already paved road, the Beatles insisted on creating their own pathway. On February 7th, 1964 they traveled to the United States. The Beatles had a persona to them in my opinion that made them mellow and loving people. The Beatles were exactly what American people needed after the assassination of their president John F. Kennedy. The fact that the Beatles set a record that has yet to be broken ...
What emerged after the explosion of rock and roll in the 1950s abandoned the roll and has now come to be known just as classic rock. This rock that was created following the decade of The King became a completely unique and different sound that changed the musical landscape and what was once a single, unified genre gave way for multitudes of variation in its sounds. These new sounds, that came mostly from abroad, had been notably influenced by the American rock of the 1950s, such as Elvis, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. These pioneers of rock came to be the essential reason for the arrival of the British Invasion and other sounds that defined the decade of the 1960s.
In Rock- The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Yorke provides a chronological approach to rock and roll from 1877- 1974. Although it is not extremely detailed, a general overview of each year’s music is presented. Throughout the book, many descriptive summaries of individual artists may be found along with classic pictures.
It is derived from African American roots in musical styles such as gospel, boogie woogie, jazz, jump, and rhythm & blues but also has strong roots from hillbilly music which would later be known as country. Rock and Roll has really been in existence since the early 20th century but never attained the name until April 12th 1954, the day some would say that Rock ‘n’ Roll was born, when Bill Haley & his Comets recorded ‘Rock Around the Clock’. Although considered the day Rock ‘n’ Roll was born, many other events in American history have given foundation to this much-loved idea. Rock ‘n’ Roll is much more than just music, rather it is the movement which underlines cultural imperialism. Rock promotes a culture of comfort and freedom from social constraints.
When I first started reading, the chapters in the textbook I was confused about how and why certain song are considered rock and roll. It is easy for me to understand why Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” is classified as rock and roll. The 2-bar blues derived riff from the guitar in the beginning draws you into the song. Then they hit you with the drums and vocals and your hooked. The thing that I could not understand was why groups like the Culture Club and their song “Karma Chameleon” would be studied in a class about roc...
I believe that the history of rock and roll demonstrates a link between culture and social class race, and age; by the way a genre brings all the people in these different categories into one big group. When rock and roll began to emerge people from different cultures and social classes started to come together as a group by the way they dressed. It was not only the music but also the fashion it brought along with it. People from this era changed the way they dressed, styled their hair and their means of transportation. This brought together people from different cultures and social class, race and age all together.
Rock and Roll is commonly known as the greatest music ever created. Most people do not know that Rock and Roll emerged out of the United States in the 1950s. Artists during this time like Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, and Bob Dylan were the first major stars among the birth of Rock and Roll in America. Since the 1950s, we have seen a rise in Rock and Roll culture. A peak in the 1960s-1970s was when the world began a musical, political, and social revolution. The revolution takes place during some tense times in the world- The Vietnam War, Political Issues with Cuba, JFK Presidency/Assassination, Malcolm X’s Assassination, Martin Luther King’s Assassination — you name it. The world was in a turmoiled state of mind, but what
After many of World War II’s harmful effects, the 1950s served as a period of time of musical change that reflected the dynamic of society as well as the traditional norms and values. Many factors contributed to this transformation. For example, the civil rights movement heightened many racial tensions, and the music produced consequently manifested this tension in itself. Rock-n-roll and R&B music universalized music typically associated with African-Americans, and many African-American musicians gained fame; however, as with any relatively-widespread success, there were many musicians as well who missed their opportunities due to the same racial segregation. While “radical” genres such as R&B and rock-n-roll laid the foundation for music future forms of music, the standard pop, jazz, and country music adhered to traditional values, and thus continued to maintain popularity amidst phenomena such as the Elvis craze.
Nobody knows where Rock and Roll first originated, it is still argued by Historians to this day. Many think the song “Rocket 88” by Ike Turner/ Jackie Brenston (1951) is the very first true definition. The genre first started to be called “”Rock & Roll” by famous disc junkie based in Cleveland, Alan Freed. He first used this term in a session
Brilliant, excellent, and beautiful are only a few words that can describe E.L Doctorow’s Ragtime. This novel represents many historical events and people in a fact and fictional manner. The story starts out in New Rochelle, New York just years before the First World War. Harry Houdini crashes his car into a telephone pole outside of the home of an American family. From here, the novel takes many shocking turns through history and fiction such as the murder of Stanford White all the way up to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Ragtime teaches the relationship between exploitation and violence by using many comparisons throughout history and by appealing to the reader’s portrayal of what is moral versus what is immoral. History and the influence of others such as parents, is what helps us define what we portray as justified and unjustified in certain circumstances that are reflected by Doctorow. For example, the Coalhouse Walker situation is one of many circumstances throughout the novel that helps the reader think about whether his actions are portrayed as justified or not. Doctorow’s portrayal of Coalhouse Walker helps the reader define how they think of what is justifiable or unjustifiable. The way this story is written, is to show that everyone has their own view of what is moral and what is immoral. Throughout the story, there are several characters that test this idea of moral versus immoral through the relationship of exploitation and violence. Another example of this idea would be the exploitation that is relayed through the story when the textile mills strike and the violence is portrayed through the Children’s crusade. These examples are just two of the several examples that exemplify the relationship between ...
Edgar Lawrence Doctorow, named after the famous Edgar Allen Poe, has been recognized in literature for his “overwhelming critical and commercial success of Ragtime,” published in 1975 (“Doctorow, E.L” 427). Critics raved about Doctorow’s success to capture post World War I zeitgeist with the help of historical figures such as Harry Houdini and J.P Morgan. The novel was later turned into the film making commercial success in the movie industry in 1981. Although Ragtime was written regarding society in the early twentieth century, the social tension and change was relevant in the 1970’s. Society was constantly changing in culture, making it harder for generations to adapt to their new, strange surroundings. Ragtime reveals how change can either be accepted or rejected within society.
Rhythm and blues, also known as R&B, is something that I really enjoy. I am a singer and along with country music, R&B is my favorite thing to sing. With rhythm and blues, there is a song for every emotion, so most of the time the songs can be very relatable. The songs have a variety of subjects like sex, work, and even drinking. In this paper I will briefly discuss how rhythm and blues started, how it evolved into today’s music and why I like it so much.
Beatles founder, John Winston Lennon, started his epic rock journey on October 9, 1940 in England during the Second World War. At the young age of four, Lennons parents were separated and Lennon then moved with his aunt, MiMi. His mother visited him regularly and showed him how to play many musical instruments until she found a new husband. Elvis Presley was in his prime while Lennon was only sixteen years old. Elvis was a major influence to him. Lennon had was married twice during his live, first to Cynthia
There is so much information on Rock that I will have to have questions I want to find the answers to about the music. My first question will be, "What instruments are commonly used in a rock band?" This will not be hard to answer as it is a very easy question that has a definite answer. The next question will be, "Who were the first artists to produce Rock music?" This is also an easy question were I will discuss the first Rockers. Continuing on, my next question will ask, "How was the term Rock and Roll' created, and by who?" This may turn out to be a hard question to answer because I am sure there a multiple answers. "Has Rock become more or less popular since its inception?" will be my next question. For this question I will have to look for a survey or poll of some type and present its data. My final question will be, "How has the Music been changed over the years and who changed it?" This will also be an easy question, albeit a long answer. For that question I will be referring to Alternative and Grunge Rock, my preferred form of the music.
The Beatles wrote hundreds of songs throughout their long career and many of which had the same main ideas in them. Those two ideas seem to standout in most of their songs, and they are the ideas of peace and love. They were so passionate about these two ideas especially world peace, that they became avid participants and leaders in the anti-war movement, against the War in Vietnam. It seemed strange ...
The Beatles are an English rock band who originated in Liverpool, England in 1960. They were a huge success locally even before they began to make records in the United Kingdom. The band was comprised of four members: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They owe much of their early, quick success to manager Brian Epstein who molded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin who enhanced their musical potential. Early in the 1960’s, their widespread fame in the United Kingdom was first referred to as “Beatlemania”. Eventually, they acquired the nickname “the Fab Four” as Beatlemania grew rapidly in Britain. By 1964, the Fab Four made their way overseas and officially became international pop stars. The Beatles were the leading factor in the “British Invasion” of the United States pop market.
