Netflix has become something of a hotbed for television binge-watchers, but despite some criticism, its selection of movie entertainment remains formidable as well. If you’re looking for something to whet your cinematic whistle, look no further than these five classics and modern favorites. Oldboy (2003) Before Spike Lee remade Oldboy with Josh Brolin, it was a brutal story of revenge known as Oldeuboi in its native South Korea. In it, Dae-su Oh (played by a haggard, simmering Min-sik Choi) seeks revenge after being held prisoner in a mysterious room for 15 years. The film includes the infamous hallway hammer fight and concludes with an ending that’s utterly visceral and shocking. If you can stomach graphic violence, don’t miss this original production. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) …show more content…
It’s hard to believe that this landmark achievement was released over 25 years ago, so fluid is the marriage of live action and animation. The late Bob Hoskins stars as a down-and-out gumshoe that gets caught up in a Toon Town murder mystery, and reluctantly aids the eponymous Roger in clearing his name. Full of inside jokes and classic cartoon characters from Bettie Boop to Daffy Duck, this is a must-see for the whole family. Starship Troopers (1997) From the name to the cover to the cast, almost everything about Starship Troopers can deceive you into believing it’s little more than mindless sci-fi action—and sometimes it is. In between, however, it is a commentary on government and global conflict, and although it replaces foreign warfighters with swarms of massive space bugs, the impact is still felt. Whether it’s playing at political undertones or video game-style intergalactic warfare, this one’s a wild ride from start to finish. Moonrise Kingdom (2012) Wes Anderson has cemented himself as one of the top directors of his time, and he crafts a storybook world for Moonrise Kingdom to play out a coming-of-age story that’s at once unique and universal.
With an all-star cast of Anderson regulars (Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman) plus plenty of other A-listers (Ed Norton, Frances McDormand, Bruce Willis) on tap, Kingdom is a colorful, heartfelt treat for any cinema lover. To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) With the recent release of author Harper Lee’s sequel of the original book of the same name, this Robert Mulligan-directed classic of To Kill a Mockingbird is perhaps the defining legal drama of its time. Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) is a white lawyer who agrees to defend a black man accused of raping a white woman in Jim Crow-era Alabama. He faces not only an uphill battle in the courtroom, but among his fellow citizens as well. Winner of three Oscars including Best Actor and Adapted Screenplay, Mockingbird is a tour de force that will surely be referenced for generations to come. Because Netflix can be known for swapping out its roster, be sure to check out these standouts before the streaming company switches it
up.

Atticus Finch, a lawyer and single parent in a small southern town in the 1930's, is appointed by the local judge to defend Tom Robinson, a black man, who is accused of raping a white woman. Friends and neighbors object when Atticus puts up a strong and spirited defense on behalf of the accused black man. Atticus renounces violence but stands up for what he believes in. He decides to defend Tom Robinson because if he did not, he would not only lose the respect of his children and the townspeople, but himself as well.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel written by Harper lee in 1960. The novel tells the story of Atticus Finch, a white lawyer, and Tom Robinson, a black servant, accused of raping a white female. Finch defends Robinson in court arguing lack of evidence as his main point. However, the judge and jury still believe the woman’s testimony and orders Robinson to be killed. The novel has been praised for its outstanding literature since its publication. However, it remains a banned book by the American Library Association for its use of racial slurs and profanity. Due to it being banned, many high schools have reconsidered the notion of teaching it to their students. Two prominent authors wrote articles pertaining to this piece of literature: Angela Shaw-Thornburg wrote an article on her re-reading of the novel and her opinions on it; while Malcom Gladwell wrote an article comparing Atticus Finch to a state governor liberalist, James Folsom, and the restraints of liberalism in the south. In addition, Rebecca Best contributes her thought on how the novel should be taught by introducing the idea of “the other.” Regardless of the modern day political arguments surrounding this piece of literature, this novel contains a large insight into the time period of the 1960s which is an influential topic that should be taught to young high school students.
To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee sheds light upon the controversy of racism and justice in his classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. The notion of equality in accordance with the law and the pursuit of justice are hindered by racial discrimination. The essence of human nature is pondered. Are we inclined to be good or in the wrath of evil? The novel reflects on the contrasting nature of appearance versus reality.
Miss. Evers Boys is a movie based on the real life study called “The Tuskegee Study” that took place in Macon County, Alabama, where 400 black men who had syphilis and 200 black men without this disease participated on this study without knowing the terrible truth behind it. Also the participants were poor and uneducated sharecropper who fell for Miss. Evers persuasions and rewards that doctors were offering to participants. The main results that doctors were trying to obtain from this experiment was to gain information about how African Americans men’s bodies reacted to syphilis. During the 1930’s, society believed that black men were inferior to white men, so diseases were supposed to affect differently black men. This study in particular, the participants were not informed about the capacity that this disease could damage their human system and they were not viewed as a human being and they were used as lab rat. Furthermore, one of the doctors who were involved in this experiment Dr. Raymond Vonderlehr used the term “necropsy” that is an autopsy performed on animals when speaking about the participants of this experiment (Mananda R-G, 2012).

For this assignment, I decided to do my film review on To Kill a Mockingbird (Mulligan, R., & Pakula, A. (Directors). (1962). To Kill a Mockingbird[Motion picture on VHS]. United States of America.) I have a personal connection to this film because it is one of my most beloved novels by Harper Lee. I have never watched the film so it was a nice experience to see the characters I have loved for years come to life just before my eyes. The film particularly focuses on a white family living in the South of the United States in the 1930s. The two siblings, Jem and Scout Finch, undergo major changes while experiencing evil and injustice in their small town of Maycomb. Jem and Scout’s father is named Atticus and he is a well-respected man in the town as well as being a lawyer.
Not many African Americans had the opportunity to be involved in the process of major productions. Because racism in To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is underplayed in the film, it shows society’s unwillingness to address the issues even during the Civil Rights Movement. The movie focuses more on Tom Robinson’s case itself, than the social caste issues with the citizens of Maycomb (Dave). The movie was made in Hollywood during the the civil rights movement, which proves that the lack of racial issues addressed is intentional.
In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, a constant theme that runs through the book is one that highlights the need for action. Atticus Finch, a lawyer in 1930’s Alabama, is faced with challenging “a white man’s word against a black man’s” (Lee 187). Unfortunately for Atticus Finch, during this time and in cases such as this one, the “white man always wins” (Lee 187). Atticus wanted to believe that “in [The United State’s] courts, all men are created equal”; however, the defendant, Tom Robinson’s case went into “the essence of a man’s conscience”, and in Atticus’ conscience, he kne...
“You never really understood a person until you consider things from his point of view—until you climb into his skin and walk around it.” Atticus Finch is a man of extreme integrity. He, as both a lawyer and a human being, stands up for his democratic beliefs and encourages his children to stand up for their own, though they may stand alone. Harper Lee showed how far respect went in To Kill a Mockingbird when Atticus defended Tom Robinson in his rape trial. He did not think twice about being ridiculed by th...
Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee’s performances as Sergeant Howie and Lord Summerisle respectively, help bring Anthony Shaffer’s script to life and add to eeriness the film gives audiences. Not to mention the giant wicker man at the end where Sergeant Howie
1) Netflix’s currently does not have a user-friendly method for customers to stream videos onto television sets. Netflix is entering agreements with the manufacturers of game systems, Blu-ray disc players, and televisions to include software capable of streaming Netflix videos. 2) There is strong competition with other companies that offer video streaming at no extra charge. Additionally, Netflix and its competitors are attempting to enter the digital world.
Why not Hulu or other providers? Hulu may get TV shows the day after they air but Netflix has significantly more shows and movies in general. Both Hulu and Netflix work on mobile devices, game consoles and link to social networks. Thor Jensen, author of the article Netflix vs. Hulu Plus states that “with the correct hardware, Netflix offers the best experience in streaming.” Netflix also has little to no ads, while Hulu depends on them. Offering ad free streaming has proven to be quite a leg up in the competition in terms of allowing subscribers to enjoy their favorite shows almost instantly. When compared to cable, Netflix has more recent movies and shows. It is convenient and easy to stream, one could watch it on their phone or laptop on the go. As compared to only a few years ago when consumers would have to drive to the nearest location to pick up the movie and return it within the time it is
