Twenty-one years ago, over ninety-five million people turned their television sets to local and cable news channels to watch a historic car chase through Los Angeles. The police were chasing a famous football player and actor by the name of Orenthal James (OJ) Simpson as he sat in the back seat of a 1993 white Ford Bronco holding a gun to his head. The owner of the Bronco and long-time friend Al (A.C.) Cowlings was driving, aiding and abetting the fugitive. Five days before the famous car chase OJ Simpson was accused of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in front of her residence. The low-speed chase lasted two hours and ended in front of Simpson’s home without incident. With Simpson captured and behind bars, the stage was set for the trial of the century. murders proves that OJ Simpson committed murder. Anyone who is familiar with this case will say OJ Simpson committed the crimes. OJ Simpson was accused of the murders and during his trial, he was acquitted because of the terrible mishandling of evidence. The evidence strongly points towards OJ Simpson and the nation was shocked when he was acquitted. The prosecution in this case claimed that OJ Simpson killed Nicole because of his intense jealousy and uncontrolled rage (Egan, 1995). Nicole and OJ’s life seemed to be perfect until Nicole suspected OJ to be womanizing and later found to be unfaithful.
Like any marriage, this soon caused many problems with the relationship. Nicole had a bad temper and the world found out later that their beloved football star, OJ Simpson had a worse temper. OJ not only became unfaithful to Nicole, he also became abusive. Nicole was seen several times with marks and bruises on her body from OJ. On January 1st, 1991, Nicole made an emergency 9-1-1 call reporting OJ for abuse (Hunt, n.d.). When police arrived, Nicole ran out from behind some bushes of their home covered in blood insisting that OJ was going to kill her. OJ quickly came outside and insisted that the bruises came from a mutual wrestling type fight. He became enraged once he found out he was going to be arrested and snuck out a side door and drove away. The next day he was apprehended. During that fight, Nicole wrote in her statement that OJ threatened to kill her. Although this incident landed OJ with two years of probation, the abuse continued until Nicole filed for divorce in
1992. When OJ and Nicole’s divorce was over, Nicole won a tax-free lump sum of $433.000 and $10,000 monthly child support payments. Once Nicole was divorced, she started to see other people and witnesses say that this would turn OJ inside out with jealousy rage. What is ironic about this story is that the two of them actually stayed close even after all the fighting and the settlement of the divorce. The two had reconciled on a couple of occasions and even went on vacations together with the kids. There are eyewitness accounts that Nicole saw OJ out on a date after their divorce and was screaming jealous obscenities towards both OJ and his date. During OJ’s trial, the prosecution believed OJs jealousy was the cause of Nicole’s murder. The day of her murder, the Brown family had made plans to attend Sydney’s dance recital. OJ made plans to attend as well. Nicole and the Brown’s did not reserve a seat for OJ and when he arrived after Nicole and her family were seated, he became enraged that he had nowhere to sit. Witnesses state that after the recital, Nicole, OJ, and her family appeared very social and that OJ was no longer upset about the seating situation. After the recital, Nicole and her family were scheduled to eat at a restaurant where OJ’s oldest son Jason worked, in which OJ was scheduled to attend. At the last second, Nicole changed her mind and decided to go to the restaurant that Ronald Goldman worked at and told OJ that he was not invited. Familiar with Nicole and Ron’s friendship and knowing Goldman worked there; OJ was enraged of this decision.
One of the most famous cases of the mid-nineties (and possibly one of the most controversial) of the wealthy being above the law is the O.J. Simpson trial, who fatally stabbed his ex-wife Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman. During the time that O.J was on trial for the murders of Nicole and Ronald, everyone who was following the hearing had a deep sense of fear and pity. The accusations developed about O.J left people who didn’t even personally know him in tears. People were so sad about his downfall. Furthermore, since he was found not guilty, there was a large part of the audience that felt a sense of release and emotion, and some felt bad that he was ever accused of this, but rather he just in the wrong place at the wrong time. On June 13, 1994, Nicole Brown, ex-wife of O.J. Simpson, was found murdered alongside Ronald Goldman (Dershowitz 19). Chapter one of Reasonable Doubts describes how many people jumped to the conclusion that O.J. carried out the murders. Incriminating evidence emerged that more than pointed to Simpson’s guilt (Dershowitz 21). Soon enough, media reports claimed that Simpson would be charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Simpson’s reluctance to be peacefully taken into custody was illustrated by his famous Los Angeles free-way chase that ended in his eventual surrender (Dershowitz 23). Dershowitz chose to join the defense team when offered the opportunity, claiming that the case could greatly educate people, especially his Harvard law students, on...

Several news organizations requested access to photographs of the crime and transcripts of conferences held in the judge’s office. A lot of this information was sensitive material that was still being decided upon whether to reveal to the jury, but the media still wanted to have
The People of the State of California v.
