How does power change the way that people think about you? In the book Of Mice and Men it shows how power changes the way people treat you.The more power you have the higher in authority you are. Having less or no power will entitle you to less respect.Or maybe that’s not always the case. Curley had power and respect because of his money what if one day lost all of his money would other people still respect him? Do people actually respect Curley, for who he is? Why can you have power over some people but not others? The more power you have does not entitle you to respect. Just because you have power does that mean that people will respect you? In the book mice to men Curley was their boss’s son and he was usually left in charge. Curley had power because the men feared that if they disrespected him that they would lose their jobs, and he was an x-boxer. Lenny feared Curly he said,”Don’t tell Curley said none of this.he’d slough me. He just don’t give a damn. He won’t ever get canned ‘ cause his old man’s the boss.pg (27)”. Curley wasn’t respected because of his authority he was respected because he was a potential threat. Slim was another man in the book who was well respected, he wasn’t …show more content…
respected for his money because he had none, he was respected for his authority and who he was.” He had so much respect, this made him have power. “His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject, be it politics or love”(pg 33). He was so well respected that , it made him an authority figure. Well because we know who has the power, you might want to know who dosen’t have the power and why? One person that didn’t have power was crooks. Crooks was black and this book takes place during the time of segregation. Crooks felt left out and he said, “ You aint got no right to be in my room , I ain’t allowed in your’s so you ain’t allowed in mines”(pg 68).Back then black people were viewed as powerless therefore, being that crook’s was black he was viewed as powerless and he was alienated. Another person that didn’t have power was Lenny, Lenny had special needs and he was looked at as stupid so automaticly anyone that he came across him felt that it was their place to tell him what to do, how to do it and when to do it. George always told Lenny what to do he once said,” You just stand there and don’t say nothing. If he finds out what a crazy bastard you are, we won’t get no job, but if he sees ya work before he hears ya talk,we’re set.” George felt as if it was his position to tell Lenny what to do, It’s not Lenny’s fault that he was powerless. Does your authority persuade people? In the book mice to men the men were to trying to persuade Candy into killing his dog One man in particular who was trying to persuade Candy was Carlson. Carlson was trying to persuade Candy so hard, but he failed. Slim was able to persuade Candy into killing his dog. One thing that stood out to me was that Candy didn’t respect Carlson, so he didn’t respect Carlson’s oppinion. Carlson didn’t have power so he wasnt respected. In the book mice to men it said, “His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject, be it politics or love”(pg 33). So that means that the more authority you have the more your oppinon is valued. If Carlson had as much authority as Slim did ,Candy would have taken Carlson’s word. Another example of power Is George, George’s power was very minimal the only person he could tell what to do was Lenny. The only person George gave orders to was Lenny, George had no authority so his word was hardly ever taken. Does not having power restrict you ?In the book mice to men Curley’s wife could not follow her dreams because she was a woman, women in her time were powerless.
She couldn’t follow her dreams because she was restricted because of her gender. Another example is Lenny, Lenny has special needs so he was seen as powerless. Being powerless restricts you from doing what you want. Lenny was not able to do what he wants in the beginning of the book mice to men George said to lenny,” Lenny for God sakes don’t drink so much...you gonna be sick like you was last night”(pg 3). Being that Lenny was always told what to he got got in a habit of letting people telling him what to do. Lenny wouldn’t be able to survive if people didn’t tell him what to
do. After reading this article i hope you learned something. But you never should think that being powerless makes you a weak person. Lenny was powerless but he had Strength which made people fear him. And Just because you have respect doesn’t mean that people will respect you. It is better to have respect than power because when someone respects you they respect you because of who you are. Curley had all of the power put had no respect.
Would you be able to kill your lifelong companion? George Milton had to make that choice in John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men. After a whole bunch of misadventures with his mentally handicapped giant, Lennie Small. Lennie accidently murdered a woman out of innocence. While the ranch men search for Lennie, George made the decision to give Lennie a merciful death. I believe that George should have killed Lennie because he would have been put in an institution, Curley would have been cruel to him, and George had to give him a merciful death.
What is power to a human? As time has gone by, there have been many forms of control and influence in the world. Many strive to achieve total rule over a society or group of individuals. Yet the question still presents itself to the average man. Why does man desire power so greatly even though there is visible trouble that follows? Shelley’s Frankenstein, Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron”, and Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, whether through the situation or the character themselves, depict the evils and hardships due to an imbalance and poor management of power.
This passage comes from the fourth chapter in Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. George and the other workers are “gone into town” (69). Lennie, Crooks and Candy are the only men remaining on the ranch. This excerpt characterizes Crooks and promotes the themes of loneliness and dreams. In addition, this passage characterizes Lennie and reinforces the theme of companionship.
Through the ages, archetypes have constantly shown up in all forms of literature. One specific classic, the quest, is most notably known from many literature novels. The character Lennie in the novel Of Mice and Men demonstrates the archetype of the quest by facing trying challenges, and the goal of a peaceful life.
When somebody abuses a great amount of power, that individual can lose all their power. The struggle against someone who abuses power is perfectly depicted in the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, by Ken Kesey. When someone abuses their power, they can impose certain feelings and actions onto others. If someone tries to conceal their personality, . Finally, if someone abuses power and is constantly challenged by another individual who is trying to take the power abuser’s power away from them, the power abuser will always be frightened of his or her challenger. When someone abuses power and takes full control, they can lose all their power and respect quickly.
"OF MICE AND MEN IS A NOVEL WHICH EXPLORES THE BURDENS OF RESPONSIBILITY AS MUCH
Has loneliness ever creeped up your spine? Has the palm of lonesome ever managed slapped you across the cheek, leaving a mark that is unable to be faded; physical pain from such a mentally-fitted emotion? Of Mice and Men is a book about two men - George and Lennie - who travel together, both having a dream of grabbing a plot of land to begin their own farm. Furthermore, foreshadowing is an important aspect of this book; but, what is foreshadowing? To answer this in Layman's terms, foreshadowing is the process of hinting at future events. In Of Mice and Men, there are various traces of the writer’s use of foreshadowing. This includes the title itself, Lennie accidentally harming various creatures, Crook’s skeptic-attitude towards George and Lennie, and the general inhumanity of people at that time.
When you’re in a position of high authority, it comes with a great sum of power. Having a great deal of control can corrupt and can lead to the abuse of it. Abuse of power is using their power for their own benefit even if it may harm others. In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the effects of the abuse shown by Curley and Curley’s wife to the other characters will ultimately lead to a tragic end.
The book, Of Mice and Men is not just about the death of Lennie, as one might think, it’s also about power. Throughout the book, one can observe each character’s attempts to gain influence over the ranch crew, or at least to be accepted into a society. However, only one man can be on top, and that man became Slim, the ageless jerkline skinner. Unlike Curley, he lead with an understanding mind instead of abusing the power gained by achieving the American Dream.
Power helped some people in this novel by helping them do what was right. Like George, he was the new guy, the guys still accepted him because he seemed like a kind and trustworthy person. So he never really had problems with people except Curley but Curley was just that kind of person because he thought he was better than everyone else and bigger. He also had power though since his dad owned the farm he practically could do whatever he wanted so no one really wanted to mess with them because if he wanted to he could get people canned. His dad had power over everything since he owned the farm he controlled who worked there and who did not and what kind of jobs people would do. Slim had power too because he was kind of like a leader and he was a nice guy. He was also very respectful and knew where his place was and did not run into trouble since no one had a reason to mess with him. Carlson had some power to in this book when he took control and killed Candy’s dog, “I’ll put the old devil out of his misery right now and get it over with.” (47)
Power has been defined as the psychological relations over another to get them to do what you want them to do. We are exposed to forms of power from the time of birth. Our parents exercise power over us to behave in a way they deem appropriate. In school, teachers use their power to help us learn. When we enter the work world the power of our boss motivates us to perform and desire to move up the corporate ladder so that we too can intimidate someone with power one day. In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness Kurtz had a power over the jungle and its people that was inexplicable.
5.) Crooks- Crooks, the black stable-hand, gets his name from his crooked back. He is isolated from the other men because of the color of his skin. Soon, Crooks becomes fond of Lennie, and even though he claims to have seen countless men following empty dreams of buying their own land, he asks Lennie if he can go with them, because he wants to hoe in the garden.
Lennie to take care of. The next day George convinces the farm boss to hire
Characters have played a large role in setting the theme of abusive power; they gain power over a group of individuals and misguide them. One obvious example from Lord Of the Flies was Jack. Towards the beginning of the novel, when the “elections” for the leader of the group took place Jack tried to get power. “‘I ought to be chief,’ said Jack with simple arrogance, ‘because I’m the chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp’” (Golding 22). After losing the election to Ralph, he became the head of the hunters. Here he abused the miniscule powers given to him over the small group of boys formerly known as the “choir”. Jack’s influence possibly corrupted the minds of the young boys and made them into cold blooded killers going from killing pigs for food to harming humans for enjoyment. “The circle moved round. Robert squealed in mock terror then in real pain… Jack had him by the hair and was brandishing his knife.” (Golding 114). The significance of this was that it was the first major point that lead to the collapse of society on the island. Jack thought that Ralph did not appreciate what he was doing for the group by gett...
In this world, they always say that power will give you more respect from people. However, none of of that is completely true in this story of Romeo and Juliet. Instead of giving respect, power makes you lose love and respect from not just your peers, but from your family too. In Romeo and Juliet, power negatively affects the relationships which conflicts in what is expected and demonstrated loss and respect.
