Literary Analysis Sometimes people can be unfair and treat people unequally. Whether you are a boy or a girl people may find ways to treat that with disrespect. You may be called degrading names or given dirty looks from someone across the room when your gender should not have anything to do with how others act around you. This shows through in Of Mice and Men with one certain character. In Of Mice and Men the male characters should realize that gender does not define how one should be treated. Gender or any other traits should not define how others should treat you. “Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely..” Lennie said “well, I ain’t supposed to talk to you or nothing.” (86). Curley’s wife is talking to Lennie in the barn about how she is treated …show more content…
You will also be the topic of conversation. Such as this occurrence between Slim and George “Ranch with a bunch of guys on it ain’t no place for a girl, specially like her.” (51). Slim and George were playing cards and talking when the conversation went to Curley and his personality then as always goes to his wife and how she does not belong on a ranch like there own. They always seem to end up talking about her, but if they don’t talk to her or interact with her, why do they feel the need to talk about her all the time. Also, if they don’t like her, why keep talking about her instead of leaving her alone. In the story, Of mice and men, the men choose not to be friends with someone because of the way she dresses. Gender does not define how one should be treated. You should not be treated differently due to your gender. If you are given a dirty look or called a degrading name and show them that you love how you are and gender doesn’t define anything about you. Whether you are a boy or a girl, your gender does not define anything about
When asked about John Steinbeck’s career, people often refer to Steinbeck as a playwright, journalist, and a well-known novelist. The book Of Mice and Men is a popular novel by John Steinbeck and a required read for most high school students. Most of Steinbeck 's novels have a central theme focusing on the relationship between man and his environment. The American dream for George and Lennie, two of the main characters in Of Mice and Men, is to have a place of their own, to be respected, and to work hard for everything they earn and deserve. In Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, the land and a hope of a better life becomes the talisman of an American dream for Lennie and George that is left unfulfilled.
This situation goes for not only women but men as well. From an early age, both boys and girls should be taught humanity, in terms of how both men and women should be treated. Unfortunately, this rarely occurs and generations of boys and girls grow up thinking that this is the way of the world. Therefore, the vicious cycle of unfair practices is still going on to this day with little to no advancements.
It is a widely accepted notion that social context and setting is very dependent upon gender. However, the converse is what appears to be true. Sex is biological and static, however gender is a social construct that is almost entirely dependent upon the social context in which it is placed. Contrary to what is often believed, gender is an idea that society constructs and students learn at a very early age. Once gender roles are learned, it can be incredibly damaging to act out of these roles because peer criticism as well as sheer belittlement will likely ensue. In Learning Silence by Peggy Orenstein, and Pascoe’s Dude, You’re a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School, this reality that gender is dependent upon social context is discussed. More specifically, male masculinity and its dependency on femininity, or in any case, a lack of masculinity.
...male students had no problem befriending me, as well as the female students. I did know of a lot more “emotional” male students that were bullied, mainly by other male students. The main point of this article was to show that femininity is still looked at, as a bad thing because of the traits it has been given. It also brings up the fact that people are treated; whether they are male or female different, if they tend to lean more towards the feminine gender side. A persons gender is how they act and how they are but it is not what they are and that is the overall argument of this article(Shaw, Lee 126).
Society places males in one category and females in another category, although some say it could be detrimental to one if they are not sure what role to identify with or how to be accepted. An article stated by Sara Reese, “Making kids to stick to gender roles can actually be harmful to their health. States a researcher did a study that observed fourteen years old interactions over a three month period. “Usually we think of gender as a natural and biological, but it’s not... we actually construct it in ways that have problems and largely acknowledge health risks.” Several things Pereia found were aspects of what one would consider bullying today. For example, she observed girls who loved to play sports sometimes avoided them all together because it would be “the famine thing to do” Pereia said, “All of the girls were within very healthy weights, but they were all striking their intake of food in some way, so what we 're really talking about is fourteen year old girls who’s bodies are changing and developing, depriving themselves at every meal.” They boys in the study felt they had to prove themselves in some form or fashion. Pereia stated, “All faced intense pressure to demonstrate the extent of their manliness”. Today’s studies give one another a difficult time or poke fun for the smallest thing. Bullying is more prevalent today because of how society’s outlook. Girls and boys both struggle in middle school with their changing in their bodies. Their hormones change and they are changing into adolescents. Never the less the metamorphic change of their bodies is one thing, but being accepted is another aspect to take into

The discrimination of a person based on their sex has always been prevalent in society, and even though both genders can be affected by sexism, it is typically associated with females. Throughout history, women have been expected to avoid competing with men in regards to education, employment, politics, and the media.
Author and feminist Alix Kates Shulman said once: “Sexism goes so deep that at first it’s hard to see, you think it’s just reality” (McEneany). That quote sums up perfectly the way our society runs. There is no class teaching children how to act according the their gender. Yet little boys and little girls learn at a very young age what is expected of them. They get ideas about their gender roles from their parents, their school teachers and subconsciously from the toys they play with and the television shows they watch.
Gender discrimination is the action of being treated worse than others, simply because of your gender. It can occur once or continually over time, by the opposite or same sex. It is an illegal practice here in the United States, based on laws enacted in 1963-4.
Growing up the only girl with six brothers I experienced gender discrimination. I was treated differently and more unfairly than my brothers. As an adult, I was subjected to sexual jokes, harassment, and innuendo. People have implied I could not do things because of my gender. This impacted me negatively by preventing me from attempting certain things in life.
Gender is a defining character trait in regards of mentality. It influences the way a person thinks, and evidently controls how a person navigates. And although there may be many different ways for
To continue that earlier example, that baby who was assigned male at birth but who identifies as a girl may choose to express their femininity by wearing dresses, and thus is perceived by others as a girl. It is something that is choosen at birth but living in a free country everyone has the right to act the way they want to. If someone does not like being a guy they can change their way of living and dressing up and become a women. No one is going to question them as to why they are doing that. However, this also means that they could choose to have close cropped hair, a beard, and only wear traditionally masculine clothing and still identify as a girl. This gets a bit
Gender roles designate that women are not as able as men are. People who were raised during anytime before about 1980 were probably raised to believe that women were there to do housework and have kids, not to have a job and be successful. Now that the children who were brought up during these times are adults, they are bringing their objectifying views with them. They don’t see a problem with it, as it was so common before the United States and some other countries began to see how women were equal to men. These people will see treating others this way as okay, as it has been accepted for so long and it is what they were taught.
Throughout society, we see that gender and sexism plays a huge role in many aspects during an individual’s life: job opportunities, results of domestic violence, and many activities. As a woman, we are seen as people who are kind, sweet, loving, and respectable. However, these actions can be true and very wrong. Many women can be very aggressive and hostile towards others. Although, we do not realize it many individuals take gender as an aspect in determining rather or not a male or female can participate in such a thing as cheerleading, football, being a mechanic, or a welder. Sometimes being categorized as a woman and male can be very difficult because many people are quick to judge. So, therefore, there are many things that individuals go
Gender roles are a completely overrated aspect of life through the eyes of society which govern the lives of others accordingly, making them live up to the standards of others. Gender inequality is something that has been going on for decades and, even though it hasn’t, is something that has been needed to get eliminated for years. My whole life I’ve been judged by members of my family because, to them, I do not act or dress how a young lady should. Trying to change people will often make them feel insecure and be unhappy with themselves because not all men and women are the same. Not all men are athletic & enjoy the outdoors just like not all girls like dressing up & playing with dolls. Societal standards aren’t fair to either gender and shouldn’t
