The book Of Mice And Men has very many themes within it, some good and uplifting, others sad and depressing, but through all of the themes to me one theme shines and shows itself more than any other, and that theme is friendship. Friendship shoes itself many times in the story Of Mice And Men for example when Lennie and George are camping outside, because they had not yet made it to the farm, and Lennie offers to leave George and go live in the mountains in a cave and never bother him again. George responds to him by saying “no-look! I was jus’ foolin’, Lennie.’cause i want you to stay with me.” This shows how George likes lennie’s company, and doesn't want him to leave because he's his friend, and he always wants to be by him. important, but does not limit itself just to lennie and george, as seen in this next scene when slim and george had just finished bucking barley, and were talking about how well Lennie worked then George slips up and has to explain what happened in Weed, even after Slim hears the story he isn't afraid of Lennie or worried that Lennine might do something bad, he has trust in Lennie and George and likes them. What he says to George's story is only “He ain’t mean,”Slim said”I can tell a mean guy a mile off” Slim realizes that Lennie and George are good guys, he enjoys being around them he see’s them as good friends. For the last but certainly not least example of friendship we return to the iconic duo of George and Lennie, who’s examples of friendship are almost endless, in this scene Lennie has accidentally killed curley's wife, and ran off into the woods where George had told him to go if he did anything bad.
George realizes what he must do, as Lennie's friend he comforts Lennie by telling him, he is not mad at him and about their dream of having there own house and rabbits, and how they will one day “ live on the fatta the lan” Then …………….finally george does what he must do¨ and george raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it to the back of lennie's head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger. The crash of the shot rolled up the hills and rolled down again. Lennie jarred, and then settled slowly forward in the sand, and lay without quivering.¨ george may not have wanted to kill lennie but he knew that he had to or else curly or carlson would have and he wanted to let lennie die by his hand instead of one of theirs. Friendship is shown many times in the story of mice and men and friendship the primary theme of the story one that is shown time and time

Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, is a book that can be analyzed and broken down into a vast majority of themes. One of the predominant themes found in this book is loneliness. Many characters in this book are affected by loneliness and they all demonstrate it in one way or another throughout the book. Examples of these characters are Curley’s Wife, Crooks, and Candy.
One of the most memorable friendships of the early 2000s is portrayed in the movie Napoleon Dynamite. When the two main characters Napoleon and Pedro meet, they become fast friends. Napoleon and Pedro stay loyal to each other throughout the entire movie, despite what others might think. This is similar to how John Steinbeck portrays friendship in his novella Of Mice and Men. The friendship between the main characters of the novella, George and Lennie, is unexpected. They choose to stand by each other regardless of society’s expectations. Through this, Steinbeck communicates the theme that a loyal friend can be a haven in a heartless world.

There was a heavy rain outside, but other than that, the room was silent. George stared at the bunk where Lennie slept, unable to sleep. He was filled with hatred of the world that forced him to kill his own friend. As the night dragged on his hatred shifted to Curley’s wife, then Curley. “If Curley hadn’t let his tramp wife go around and cause trouble Lennie would still be here” George thought. Just then, Lennie appeared in front of him with a look of deep sadness and pain. Seeing Lennie’s pain and suffering, sent him over the edge. “That god damn Curley!” George thought, grabbing Carlson’s gun while he slept. “This is all his fault!” he thought, consumed by rage. He shuffled over to where Curley slept and pulled out the gun. George aimed the gun at Curley and pulled the trigger. An instant later he is horrified by what he has done. Do you know what the meaning of friendship is? In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, you learn about George and Lennie taking care of each other. They also support one another in striving after their shared dream. George and Lennie make sacrifices for one another and are responsible for one another. George and Lennie’s relationship shows us the true meaning of friendship.
Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is a story that shows how weak people can be in the sense of loyalty. This loyalty, defined as putting strong will and strength into a relationship in all cases is being put into a light of making choices. This means you have to make the decision between Loyalty and "Friends", which also can be described as people that are together but basically are lonely for themselves and that decision-making is important.
Of Mice and Men and The Fault in Our Stars are similar in how they demonstrate themes such as the negative effects of loneliness and the value of friendship. In both books, the effects of being lonely led Crooks and Peter Van Houten not knowing what has happened and becoming an alcoholic. Another theme the book both represent includes how much each character loves each other to make a strong, forever lasting friendship. Whether it’s giving ketchup or an international plane ride, the friendship the characters have can not be avoided. All in all, being lonely is no fun, and having a close relationship is how you will become happy. Remember, if people are by themselves, become their friend. Making some lonely to having a friendship could impact that person’s life completely.
Overall, I consider friendship and human nature the main aspects of the story, Of Mice and Men. Although there could have been many other themes in the story, I don’t feel like any of them were as present throughout the story as friendship and human
Due to Lennie’s many involuntary crimes, George is nearly forced to shoot Lennie. If George had not done this, not only would Lennie be severely tortured, George would also never have a normal life. So, it is obvious that Lennie is destroyed due to his death, but George is destroyed emotionally. He knew Lennie did not deserve to die, he knew Lennie did not do what he did on purpose. “Lennie never done it in meaness. All the time he done bad things, but he never done one of ‘em mean” (Steinbeck 95) . George no longer had a companion, someone to rely on, or family. He was truly lost, just another one of the guys on the ranch. “Nearly every character struggles with some type of loneliness or feelings of separation” (60) . This quote describes how George was left in life; alone, and without Lennie. However, another quote follows this event, leaving some optimism for George. “George is left alone after Lennie dies, but there is still hope when he leaves with Slim” (Hinds) .

The bond between two people can be very simple and at the same time very complicated. Take Lennie and George for example from Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Friendship is the bond between people who hold mutual affection for each other; friendly disposition or feeling for another; the bond of friends. Throughout this novella Steinbeck shows many themes of friendship between the two, the strongest ones demonstrated are father-son, brotherly, and love-hate.
Written in the late 1930's, the novel "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck is a perfect representation of the loneliness and depression which surrounded the citizens of the United States in the Great Depression. In a time period where the weak were eliminated, "Of Mice and Men" tells the story of two friends (George and Lennie) and their tragic pursuit for contentment. Throughout their journey, these two friends encounter several people who reflect the grim reality of the era. Although all of these characters have very different backgrounds, all of them hold in common the burning desire for companionship. Unfortunately, this burning desire is a euphoria that no character obtains.
Of Mice And Men shows true brotherhood throughout the novel and what it means to be a friend, George is a very smart man in this novel but Lennie is not so bright and gets himself in trouble because of it. George knows that Lennie gets himself into trouble a lot so he is always with him so he can’t get in trouble any more. In these actions that George takes to watch out for Lennie shows that he is a true friend and how he will never be fake towards him and never leave him and always protect him. In this novel it shows how everyone has their dream on what they want in life, where they want to be and what they want to do. But these dreams are impossible because of the times they live in and how poor they are. These are the main themes in
Friendship, it can be for pleasure, money, or self gain, but the friendship that is the most scarce is that of a true friendship. True friendship is that which “stands as a challenge to the tenor of our times”.(May) True friendship is shared mutually between two people that are open and intimate. When you share personal details and experiences in your life to one another and trust one another, you develop a true friendship that is not about money or personal gain, but about being involved with the life of another human being. An example of one of these friendships is the friendship between Lennie Small and George Milton in the book Of Mice and Men.
