“Of Mice and Men” was written bye John Steinbeck and is a fictional book. “Of Mice and Men” is a book about two life long friends named George and Lennie. They go to a farm to do some farm work after having to run away from their old town Weed. In their new farm, they meet many people including Curley, a little boxer guy who hates big guys like Lennie, and Curley’s wife, who is a tart. Lennie and George have many grand adventures on the farm, but one day while George is out playing horseshoes, Lennie accidentally kills Curley’s wife. Lennie runs away but when the guys come back to find Curley’s wife dead, George is forced to kill his friend. The four people responsible for Lennie’s death are George, Curley’s wife, Lennie, and Curley. The person most responsible for Lennie’s death is George. The reasons why I think this is mainly because George shot Lennie in the end of the book. Also George left Lennie alone in the barn giving Curley’s wife a chance to come and talk to him, and that is when Lennie killed her. George should have given Lennie more instructions on what he was supposed to do while George was out with his friends. The second most responsible for Lennie’s death is Curley’s wife. The reasons why I think this is because she provoked Lennie into talking to her and into petting her hair. She was lonely and wanted someone to talk to, but she also was very flirtatious with Lennie. When she yelled she scared Lennie which made him hold on to her neck harder. Curley’s wife shouldn’t have been flirting and seeking other men while she had a husband. The third most responsible person for Lennie’s death is Lennie himself. The reason I think this is because Lennie killed Curley’s wife, which made George have to kill Lennie. He also has no control over his strength since he was retarded, which is another reason why he died. And more importantly he disobeyed George by talking to Curley’s wife, which George told him absolutely not to do. The last responsible person for Lennie’s death was Curley. Curley was very mean to Lennie and was picking on him for only the reason that Lennie was bigger than Curley. Curley was also very possessive over his wife, which lead her to look for other men.
C/R: It is true that George was only trying to save Lennie from a horrible punishment that the boys were going to bring upon him however, there were other options than killing Lennie. George didn’t have to kill Lennie, they could have run away from the mob that was chasing them, for George got to Lennie before anyone else did. They had time to escape. Therefore, George is at fault for Lennie’s death; if George really thought of Lennie as family, he would have thought of another way to get out of the problem.
Curley's wife, an accident that seals his own fate and destroys not only his dreams but George's and Candy's as well. In the beginning Lennie used to pet mice that his Aunt Clara used to give him, he would always end up killing them because he didn't know his own strength. Lennie never killed any pet or person purposely; he pets too roughly and kills them accidentally. An example of his rough tendencies is in the first chapter (page7) when Lennie wants to keep a dead mouse and George wouldn't let him Lennie says" Uh-uh. Jus' a dead mouse, George.
Lennie he killed a little puppy by accident unlike George, Lennie didn't plan to kill it. Lennie also killed Curley's wife by accident, only because he got scared. Carlson also killed something, but nothing happened to him, he killed candy's dog with a pistol. At the same time George was just trying to help Lennie out by killing because he knew that Curley would kill him.
Because of Lennie?s mental impairment and immaturity, he would not be able to handle such animosity. In saying that Lennie is not to blame for the death of Curley?s Wife, Lennie should not have to face the merciless people at the farm. George knows that Lennie is unable to survive in the world. As disappointing as it is for George to know that he and Lennie will never be able to fulfill their everlasting dream, George realizes that the best possible thing for Lennie is to end his complicated and unachieved life on Earth.... ... middle of paper ...
When lennie got in trouble in weed, he was holding on to a girls dress and she screamed which got him in trouble. As lennie quoted in document B, “Jus’ wanted to feel that girl’s dress, Jus’ wanted to pet it like it was a mouse. When he saw her dress he wanted to pet it, so when he went to go pet her dress he grabbed on when she started screaming and he wouldn’t let go, and then they sent people after george and lennie so they had to run away. Lennie has also killed the pup that was given to him by petting it too hard. Lennie said in document B, “ why do you got to get killed? You ain’t so little as mice. I didn’t bounce you to hard, you wasn’t big enough’. Lennie had killed the pup when he was just petting it, he didn’t want to kill it he was just patting it and since he is a gentle giant, he didn’t know he was patting it to hard. Lennie definetly made a clew, that he was going to kill curley’s wife, because in all the other events he got in trouble in he would end up doing a bad thing, just like in weed, and just like when he killed the
Although there are some reason why George had to killed lennie there are other reasons to why George made the
Another way that death and loss is evidenced by this novel is when Lennie killed Curley’s wife. When Lennie is in the barn (after killing his new puppy) Curley’s wife came into the barn and came on to Lennie. Lennie not knowing what was happening let her lull him into touching her hair. To Lennie it was like petting any other animal. Curley’s wife became flustered when Lennie became scared and would not let go of her hair. She started to scream and Lennie tried to cup her mouth, which concluded in him killing her. Lennie was truly remorseful after this action. Soon after killing her Lennie can be heard saying to himself, “I done a bad thing. I done another bad thing (121).”
Lennie didn't kill Curley's wife on purpose, Lennie and Curley's wife were arguing and that led Lennie to kill Curley's wife.
However, she could have prevented it. She obviously knew that Lennie had the strength to obliterate Curley’s hand, as after everyone agreed to blame the broken hand on a machining accident, she says, “Well, O.K. Machine,” proving that she knows it was Lennie who was at fault. Later on in the book, for most of chapter 5, she tells Lennie to feel how soft her hair is, knowing that Lennie was a force to be reckoned with, and then forcibly places his hand on her head, which is possibly the worst thing she could’ve done in this
So, he said “ I will go off into the mountains and find a cave and wait for george to come” (92). Lennie’s mistake caused george to be involved with the tragic incident and thus ruin his reputation of living in the dream. However, steinbeck shows that lennie’s stupidity and shortsighted actions lead george to killing him. When, curley’s wife entered the bunkhouse (in a arrogant way) this caused ruptured chaos between George and lennie because lennie was obsessed about curley’s wife. Although, due to this Curley shows, that he lets his anger control him in a naive way all because he is afraid that he might be alone. George says to lennie “ you better stay away from that girl or you will get yourself hurt” (26). Lastly, this proves that curley is obsessed with his wife for her safety and protection from lennie (because he is the more physically opposing). Now, Curley is afraid that he might become alone because of the actions of lennie. This explains that curley doesn’t want anyone flirting with his wife’ However, Curley’s wife caused the emotional discharge between lennie and george
In short, the killing of Lennie was justified, and the reasons are very clear. Firstly, Lennie was saved from a bad situation he wouldn’t want to be in. George also didn’t want him to someone else’s problem. Another thing is, George did not want Lennie to hurt someone else. Lennie took a life on accident, not knowing what he is
In the story Of Mice And Men the character George killed Lennie but it was for a good reason mercy killing was the right thing to do in this situation. One of the reasons was because Lennie was probably gonna mess more things up plus he killed Curley's wife. So that means Curley was gonna try and kill him himself or torture him so George took it into his hands
Curley's wife came in while Lennie was worried about George wouldn't let him to tend the rabbits. She tried to talk to Lennie. However, Lennie didn't want to talk to her, so she told Lennie about her dream. Lennie said he likes to pet soft things so she let Lennie to touch her hair. She yelled to Lennie when he didn't let her go. Lennie was in a shock and muffled her face and accidentally killed her. Lennie decided to hide in the brush like George told him to. Candy found Curley's wife's dead body and told George. George didn't want the other men think he asked Lennie to kill her. Therefore, George asked Candy told them after he left. Curley was furious and wanted to find Lennie and shoot him immediately. Moreover, Carlson found his Lugar was stolen and suspected Lennie took
In George's time of helping Lennie he was one of the only people who tried to care for him properly. Others often saw Lennie as too stupid to function or believed he wasn't worth helping. “I ain't saying he's bright. He ain't.” People choosing not to help Lennie led to his death because George cannot be there to help Lennie at every moment and George's inability to always be with him created a sense of loneliness in Lennie. The loneliness that Lennie felt caused him to turn to Curley’s wife as a friend rather then keeping away from her as George told had told
George and Lennie are characterised as best friends while sharing a parent-child relationship. Once George finds out that Lennie kills Curley’s wife, he learns from Candy that Curley will definitely kill him. At this point, George most likely decides that Lennie is not good for this world as he is too dangerous and likely to murder innocent people. George eventually decides to let Lennie die but he has to kill Lennie instead of letting Curley to kill him, which is confirmed when George steals Carlson’s gun. George chooses to kill Lennie because Candy teaches him that he should be responsible for the person he loves, in this case, Lennie, or in Candy’s case, his dog, as Candy put it “I shouldn't ought to of let no stranger shoot my dog" (30). During the final conversation before Lennie dies, George engages Lennie in a friendly conversation while planning to kill Lennie behind his back to save Lennie from suffering and also leaves Lennie’s last impression of George a wonderful one, this emphasises that George cares deeply for Lennie. In the final moment, George struggled to kill Lennie, as Steinbeck writes: “George’s hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied” (53), but he knows that he has to do it so “he pulled the trigger (53)” right before Curley and the others arrive. This moment is the most important in the story as this is the
