A paradox is a contradictory statement, it includes two opposing ideas which are spontaneously true, yet cannot be. The paradox in Oedipus Rex illustrates the contradiction between vision and blindness, which translates to knowledge and truth. In this case, Teiresias is blind, but is considered to be the one that can truly “see”. Oedipus can physically see, however he is figuratively “blind” to the truth.
For example, when Oedipus consults Teiresias, he is told that “you are the murderer whom you seek”, to which he replies with “Now twice you have spat out infamy. You’ll pay for it!” (320). Even after Teiresias, who is known for his intellect and wisdom, tells Oedipus the truth, he refuses to acknowledge it because he believes that he is unable to do wrong. He simply reacts to the news in anger, considering Teiresias’ response to be rude and treasonable.
Additionally, when Jocasta reveals the curse that was put upon Laius’ son, Oedipus fails to realize that this is his curse, despite how similar it is to his curse which he learned about when he spoke with the Oracle of Delphi. She describes that “an oracle reported to Laius once that his doom would be death at the hands of his own son - his son, born of his flesh and of mine!” and that “the king has pierced the baby’s ankles and left him to die on a lonely mountainside”(334). A modern example of this is Chevy Chase; once he became a famous actor, his fame and arrogance got the best of him. He disrespects others, which makes him difficult to work with and a terrible role model. He fails to realize that this attitude he presents to others is so problematic, which caused his downfall without him being able to prevent it.
