Odysseus came in contact with the Cyclops, Polyphemus, and had to come up with a strategy in order for him and his men to escape the Cyclops's cave. The crew is helpless and directs the attention to how Odysseus rescues his crew by blinding Polyphemos with a spear. He has escapes by having his men hang on the underside of rams. An epic hero is a noble and brave person that accomplishes large goals. These noble and brave people have characteristics such as being selfless and loyal. What makes these characteristics so important in an epic hero? Being selfish can make the epic hero stray from the objective. On the other hand, being loyal shows commitment and dedication. An example of epic heroes are Dory and Odysseus. Disney’s movie Finding Dory is about Dory’s journey to find her parents. Homer’s epic The Odyssey, Odysseus goes on an expedition home after the Trojan War. Both Dory and Odysseus face many risks on their journey. However, Disney’s Dory and Homer’s Odysseus are both heroes that accomplish immense feats, but Dory is a more exceptional heroine than Odysseus as Dory is more loyal and selfless than Odysseus.
The definition of a hero is unique for every individual; however there are several regulations that majority of individuals can agree on. A hero must exhibit traits such as humility, kindness, and courage. Once the candidate expresses hubris, displays cruelty, or retreats from a formidable challenge, he cannot be considered a hero. Lastly, a hero candidate must overcome challenges that defy the odds. He must deliver a gift to society that benefits society as a whole; such gifts can be freedom, liberty, or hope. Odysseus in The Odyssey, by Homer, fulfilled these requirements and rightfully earned the title of a hero. Odysseus is well deserving of the title hero because he has put the needs of others before his own, shown signs of courage in the face of adversity, and displays humility by ridding himself of his hubris.
The next trait that shows Odysseus as an epic hero is his intelligence. While on his Grand journey to get back to Ithaca, he gets caught in many situations where using brute strength is not enough to get out so he must rely on his intelligence to
The question has been raised as to whether or not Odysseus, the hero of Homers The Odyssey, is an epic hero. An epic Hero portrays many classic properties, including being very strong and courageous. Odysseus is an epic hero, because he portrays many of these and other traits, such as having a goal that is foremost in his mind, and having descended into the underworld.
The epic poem The Odyssey, written by Homer, centers around the main protagonist Odysseus and his long journey back home. Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, returns home after defeating the Trojans in a ten year war. On his way back, he angers Poseidon, god of the sea, by blinding his son, Polyphemus the Cyclops. Due to Odysseus’ actions, Poseidon refuses to let Odysseus reach home, and Odysseus and his crew are forced to go through a series of obstacles throughout the epic. Through this adversity, Odysseus must show his heroic attributions in order to survive. Homer portrays Odysseus as a hero by giving him characteristics such as: craftiness, loyalty, and bravery.
In conclusion, there are many aspects to being considered an epic poem hero. Odysseus is a prime example of one because he travels to many lands throughout his quest back to Ithaca. Also, in this epic, he fights many monsters and has to face the wrath of chosen Gods that make his journey more difficult. Therefore, Odysseus is considered an epic hero because he travels to various lands, fights monsters, and the Gods interfere with the human world to make his journey more difficult.
People are heroes in different ways for different reasons. American soldiers are heroes because they fight boldly for their country. Corrie Ten Boom is also a hero because she took risks and saved hundreds of Jews. Abraham Lincoln is another example of a hero because he fought for what he thought was right and helped free all slaves. Similarly, Odysseus, the main character in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, possesses all of these characteristics and many more, making him a true epic hero.
In conclusion, Odysseus’ intelligence, loyalty, and strength are all key aspects which make Odysseus an epic hero. Besides having those characteristics, he has passed impossible tasks and could be compared to many American superheroes such as Batman. Both have relatively the same characteristics: strength, loyalty, intelligence, courage, and pride, but what makes them an epic hero is not entirely what they have been through. It is actually their ability to portray what their civilization finds most heroic in a person that makes them an epic hero.
An epic hero is a brave and noble character in an epic story, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events. He has both many strengths and weaknesses. His many achievements make the hero seem almost god-like yet he always remains recognizably human. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is the epic hero. He encounters goddesses, sea monsters, dead spirits, and Cyclopes. While lost at sea for twenty years away from his homeland Ithaca, he faces many dangers. Odysseus will stop at nothing to see his native land once more. He possesses many qualities superior to most ordinary men such as his intelligence, bravery, and strength but his biggest weakness is his arrogance.
Can you be a hero and still have terrible flaws? In modern heroes, this is up for debate. For Odysseus in the Odyssey, he is good at what he does, but has flaws that would make him quite the opposite of a hero in a modern scenario. Often when we think about the modern hero, we think of them as being better than the normal human morally. This can be observed through their actions or deeds. As the story of the Odyssey progresses, we get an insight into who Odysseus actually is as a character. If the Odyssey was set in a modern society, Odysseus would not match the definition of a modern hero.
The main character of the Odyssey, Odysseus the King of Ithaca is given a complex personality to an extent where it is hard to identify whether he is a true hero or not. True heroism is only achieved when a person achieves certain qualities that portray heroism. Odysseus is not a hero based on the standards of merciful, selfless, and gentle because of his actions of sacrificing his men, killing the suitors and being ruthless throughout the Odyssey. Along with many others qualities these three are helpful and necessary in a hero. A hero must be willing to do service for others and put the needs of others safety and protection before his own. Odysseus does not even come close to matching these qualities because he is a person, who only serves of himself, and he sacrifices his allies to achieve his goals and often he takes action ruthlessly.
