The Odyssey Helen Keller was a woman famous for overcoming blindness and being deaf. Keller once said, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved. This means that character traits are developed as an individual has to deal with experiences. In the book The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus has to overcome many obstacles that shape some of his traits. A couple of Odysseus’ traits include loyalty and being crafty; meanwhile, I have the same traits. Odysseus and I practice loyalty in multiple ways. Odysseus comes up with the idea to “thrust and grind [a] spike in Cyclops’ eye” when the cyclops falls asleep so that the cyclops will be blind and unable to see them escape. This is witty because Odysseus came up with a plan that would manipulate the cyclops, but not kill it. He had to come up with a plan that wouldn’t kill the Cyclops (the Cyclops is the only one strong enough to push the stone out of the exit) so that he and his men could escape. As well as that Odysseus portrayed being slick when he “disguises himself as a beggar” (943). Him disguising himself is very witty because he came up with a sly plan to achieve his goal, which was to get his wife back. He knew that he if the other suitors for Penelope discovered that he actually was Odysseus, they would kill him to kidnap his fame and fortune. I too am somewhat astude. Once when I was a little girl, I seen that my mother had bought tomatoes; however, I hate tomatoes! I took each tomato out of the fridge and replaced every single on with a red jelly bean. The tomatoes were put under the logs in the fireplace. This demonstrates my ability to be clever, because I had a problem and slyly fixed it. Another time I showed this skill was when I came up with a plan to just explain my presentation from writing it out on the whiteboard.
