Odysseus: The Altruistic Hero

Romain Rolland once stated: “A hero is a man who does what he can.” Heroes don’t have to be physically strong or have magical powers. True heroes are those who are able to try their best for the sakes of others. No matter what the circumstances are, they will keep on trying as if there is nothing impossible. The ideals of heroism have changed as time goes by, but they still share one common, a hero is the one that can make the impossible possible. Similarly, the epic poem, The Odyssey, by Homer tells the story of Odysseus’s long journey back home while he deals with many adversities along the way. However, he is able to fight over those obstacles by using his intelligence, great leadership and faithfulness. As a result, he is able to return back to Ithaca. Those traits are evidence for his capability of being a true hero. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus is proven to be a hero with intelligence, leadership and faithfulness, and thus reveal the possible theme that says: what makes a man a hero is his selfless actions for the sake of others, to make the impossible become possible itself.”
Odysseus’ heroism is shown through his intelligence. In lines 118, Odysseus replied to Calypso that he “longs for home, long for the sight of home.” This line shows how Odysseus intelligently tricks Calypso into thinking that he does not wish to be with his wife as much as he wants to be with her, but he does long for his homeland, where his heart and soul lie on. Through this action, readers can assume that Odysseus is a clever man who can find his way out of danger without getting harmed. Another example of his intelligence is shown through lines 356-360, when he states: “Cyclops you ask my honorable name? Remember the gift you promise me, and ...

...made the impossible no longer impossible. Based on the evidence, a message of this epic poem may be “Perfection doesn’t make a hero. What makes him a hero is where his heart truly lies on and the actions he has taken selflessly for the sake of others.” As the poem reveals Odysseus foolish and stubborn action, it also shows Odysseus’s ability to overcome his weaknesses through his dedication as a leader and intelligence. These good qualities of his are shown through every risky action he takes in order to save his men and country. The poem reminds the readers of how the society has been for all these years. It is always full of unknown danger and temptation which can only lead to despair. However, somewhere, out there, a hero is on action. He is, with all his might and possibilities, trying to sketch a ray of hope and lead everyone out of that dark, woeful world.
