Odysseus: A True Hero

There are many different ways that a hero can be described or imagined. Everyone has their own ideas of what makes someone a hero. Also, for many heroes it is debatable whether they really are a hero. In The Odyssey by Homer, translated by Robert Fitzgerald, Odysseus is one such debatable hero. Odysseus is a hero because he is brave, level-headed, and he shows faithfulness and respect to important figures in his life. First, Odysseus shows bravery in many ways throughout The Odyssey. He shows bravery when he is with allies and friends, which is much easier to do than when one is by themselves. He shows this bravery when he goes to investigate the Kyklops’s cave, “I wished to see the caveman, what he had to offer,” (IX, 248-249). Here Odysseus shows bravery with friends because his shipmates are with him. He shakes the fear from their hearts and convinces them to stay a little longer. Odysseus knows that he could be setting himself up to be eaten, but he is brave enough to stay and convince his men to stay. The other type of bravery Odysseus shows is bravery when he is alone and without much help. He shows this bravery when he leaves Ogygia, “joy for Odysseus when he shook out sail! Now the great seaman, leaning on his oar, steered all the night unsleeping,” (V, 278-280).When he leaves he is overjoyed and ready to face anything. He is on a small raft that he made by hand in the open sea. Any normal man would go crazy at the thought of doing what he did. Also, he is alone with the god Poseidon against him. Next, is when he must face all of the suitors alone for a time, “Now shrugging off his rags the wiliest fighter of the islands leapt and stood on the broad door sill, his own bow in his hand. He poured out at hi... ... middle of paper ... ... your servant; lord have mercy on me,”” (V, 467-473). Here he begins his atonement and begins to make amends for his mistakes with Poseidon. He shows respect to the god and Poseidon has mercy on him. Like other heroes Odysseus realizes that he is not above the gods and that he needs to respect them all. Also, he has disposed of his hubris and learned humility. Odysseus keeps his respect and is faithful to his family and the gods throughout the journey. In summation, Odysseus is a true hero. Through his bravery, level-headed attributes, and his respect and faithfulness for important figures Odysseus receives the title of hero. He successfully fits the definition of a hero. Although often hard to determine if a person was a hero it is easy to see that Odysseus meets the requirements. Through examination any person can be determined as a being a hero or not.
