All of us most probably wish and strive to work towards a certain dream, goal, or utter accomplishment. When so is done, we experience satisfaction and happiness. Ups and downs are bound to be encountered throughout our journey, however, once we reach our goals, immense awards shower the hard work which has lead us to our dreams. In Joe Johnson's "October Sky", just is shown with a dynamic and shifting emotional environment with suspense and exitement, as part of the film adaption of the award winning memoir "Rocket Boys" (also known as October Sky) by Homer Hickam, Jr. Based on a true story, this biographical motion picture follows Homer Hickam, Jr, a coal miner's son who was inspired by the launch of Sputnik in

1957 to take up rocketry against his father's wishes, and who eventually became a NASA engineer. This film approprietly organizes depressing and happy happenings and moments throughout the movie, which can definetly change your mood in a second, thus is a very appealing quality of this film. Suspense is evident across the board, and will leave you hooked for more. A very inspirational piece of art, which I, and I'm sure many others, will continue to enjoy and love. Set in October, 1957, in the unincorporated community coal town of Coalwood, West Virginia, The coal mine is the town's largest employer and almost every man living in the town works in the mines.
John Hickam (Chris Cooper), the mine superintendent, loves his job and hopes that his boys, Jim (Scott Miles) and Homer Hickam (Jake Gyllenhaal), will one day join him in his mine. When it appears that Jim will receive a football scholarship to attend college, this leaves Homer to fulfill his father's dream, although his mother, Elsie (Natalie Canerday), hopes for more for her son. As inspired by the launch of Sputnik 1, Homer Hickam sets out to build rockets of his own with fellow friends he has recruited, in an desperate effort to enter the science fair and get work for NASA, whislt doing so with the lack of support from his father. The story was definetly concise, relatable, and interersting. Many of us can relate to the story of Homer Hickam, and how our dreams are not always well received by others. The plot is filled with utter suspense, and will leave the audience wondering what John will do next to interfere with his son's journey to his dream, and what successes and failures Homer will encounter. My emotions were always changing throughout the movie, as this film appropriatly implements mood. At the end of the movie, when John puts his arm around Homer and smiles, nothing but happiness had taken over me. Also, when he actually comes to Homer's rocket launch, it definetly …show more content…
did suprise, as Homer didn't come to any previous rocket launches, nor was he supportive of Homer's aspirations. On the contrary, when Homer temporarily lets go of his dream to due the arrests made on him and the "Rocket Boys" and the lack of his fathers support, depression is present among the viewer, thus providing a very dynamic environment. Homer Hickam is outstandingly played dynamically by Jake Glylenhaal, which many will know him through his other popular movies, such as Donnie Darko and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. His acting is emotionally active, and different aspects of Homer Hickam's personality and characteristics are clearly shown with emphasis and meaning. Both Chris Cooper and Natalie Canerday play Homer's characters fairly well, although I do feel that John Hickams emotions were very flat, as he seems depressed throught the entire movie, and only in the ending scene does he seem happy, whislt very static emotional characteristics. I do think Homer's mother should have had a bigger role in the movie, and she is just portrayed as the mother of Homer Hickam who just seems to make him feel better in times of distress. Miss Riley is played by Laura Dern, which she does a good job of showing Miss Riley as an appropriate character who is of great influence to Homer Hickam and the "Rocket Boys", therefore providing them with motivation and positiveity to continue to build their rockets. Chris Owen beautifully shows off Quintens nerdy personality through appropriate style of speech and facial expressions, and William Lee Scott will make you laugh through his dirty jokes as Roy Lee. The use of music and sound effects were perfected for this movie, as it has a dynamic influence on the mood and emotion of the story and movie.
In the beginning, sad, orchestral violin music is used to express the depression of the people of the United States of America after the launch of Sputnik 1 by Russia during the space race. Immediently after, Roy Lee is shown playing funky rock music inside his car while waiting for Homer to get in, thus providing a joyful mood and exciting emotional atmosphere.
This film definetly deserves five out of five stars, as the of plot of this film which is based on a true story is excellent, the actors behind the characters are marvelous, and the inclusion of appropriate music and sound effects brilliantly enhance the emotion and mood of the story. Designed for a mass audience of various ages, I would definetly not hesitate to recommend this movie to a friend, and neither will
you.
John struggled with the whole idea of rocketry. Because it was such a foreign science at the time, John could not see how it could take Homer out of Coalwood. Elsie accepted Homer’s passion and drive to learn rocketry and this put a strain on Elsie and John’s relationship. This is seen at the end of the movie when Elsie threatened to leave John and the Hickam family system if John did not help Homer build a new rocket. It appears throughout the movie that John had the most power, or the ability of an individual family member to influence others, in the family, but Elsie showed a tremendous amount of power when she gave John the ultimatum (lecture). In this instance, Elsie aligned or created a subsystem with Homer to gain power, in order to influence John (lecture). When Homer decided to get involved in rocketry, he disrupted the equilibrium in the Hickam family system because he tried to change the goals or feedback of the Hickam family (lecture). Homer received negative feedback from his father when he tried to change because the change was denied and John tried to get Homer to forget rocketry and work in the coal mine
Out of a scale of 5(as being the best), I would give it a 4 and a half. The movie had a real good plot. It showed an American soldier leave his post and communicates with the Indians, which was very shunned upon. The American got very friendly with the Indians and also had a liking towards one of the females. While there relationship goit stronger they got married and when he went back to his post to get some things, he was caught by his troops, which thought he was an Indian. When they found out he was a soldier who became an Indian, they were going to try him of treason. While he was on his way back home, the Indians came and saved him from the white men.
In my eyes I loved the book I rate it a 9/10, its had a good twist and turn to it. I loved this
October Sky is set in the small mining town of Coalwood, West Virginia during the 1950s, the time of the space race between America and Russia. The film tracks Homer Hickam, a young boy interested in creating and building rockets. Homer eventually gets a group of three friends from school to help him create a rocket. Unfortunately, Homer faces a lot of challenges including trouble getting the right materials for the rocket and he faces pushback from his father who disapproves of his dream of building a rocket and winning the science fair. However, there is also a group of people in the town of Coalwood that support him and help him out.
In the movie October Sky produced by Larry Franco, Homer Hickam faces many sacrifices to pursue his dream. Homer lives in a small town, he spends his time with his friends Roy Lee, Odell and a later friend, Quinton. Homer lives in a home where he’s expected to work in the coal mining industry after his dad, but he has bigger plans, as big as rocket science, literally. Homer was inspired by mrs. Reiley his science teacher to build a rocket with his friends while making big choices along the way.
IV. Film Plot: This film pretty much is all about the advances in American technology and how it affected the space race against the Soviets. It revolves around the Mercury 7 crew and test pilots competing with Soviets for the race to outer space.
“There once was a time in this business when I had the eyes of the whole world! But that wasn't good enough for them, oh no! They had to have the ears of the whole world too. So they opened their big mouths and out came talk. Talk! TALK!” (Sunset Boulevard). The film Sunset Boulevard directed by Billy Wilder focuses on a struggling screen writer who is hired to rewrite a silent film star’s script leading to a dysfunctional and fatal relationship. Sunset Boulevard is heavily influenced by the history of cinema starting from the 1930s to 1950 when the film was released.
Chicanos and Chicanas are often stereotyped by people based on crude and unfair assumptions but at the same time, these stereotypes are often based on the truth. Movie directors are no exception as they attempt to understand and give representation to entire Chicano/a and Latino/a culture in society. I believe that E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is the best movie of all time and here is why. The film E.T. directed by Steven Spielberg, was nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. Not to mention E.T. superseded Star Wars: A New Hope as the highest-grossing film of all time in the United States. Also, this movie was filmed in chronological order so the emotion between the characters were real which resulted an emotional response from the audience. Finally, E.T. is a timeless film, any age or generation can enjoy it because of its universal
Moonlight is a motion picture with a tender, heartbreaking story of a young man's struggle to find himself, told across three chapters in his life as he experiences ecstasy, pain, and the beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality and dealing with his more difficult past. Moonlight describes a touching way of those moments, people and unknown forces that shape our lives and make us the way we are. A major theme of Moonlight is the black male identity and its interactions with sexual identity. The motion picture combines acceptance and love with pain and narrow-mindedness. In it’s simplicity the movie is a chronicle of the childhood, adolescence and burgeoning adulthood of a young black man growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.
“The Mission” is based on a true story that occurred around the borderlands of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil in the years 1750’s according to the film and history. The Treaty of Madrid of 1750 with the Spanish and Portuguese caused both havoc and death for the people of the Guarini and the members of the Jesuits. The Jesuits, members of the church, tried to bring Christianity and civilization to the natives while keeping at peace with Spain and Portugal. The Jesuits were the teachers for the natives; Teaching them not only the Christian religion but also civilization. Father Gabriel, a Jesuit, is first introduced in the film when he is showing his respects to a former Jesuit priest killed by the natives. He walks through the South American
District 9 is a film that takes us into a realm of a different world from the one that we know now. It combines extraterrestrial life with immense science fiction to illustrate a story we could only imagine to ever actually occur. Although it was created for entertainment purposes, the motion picture can be compared to many different types of individuals and situations. District 9 displays many underlying concepts throughout the movie about racism, prejudice and discrimination. While studying and analyzing the plot and characters, these concepts became more translucent to me, the viewer. This paper will discuss the treatment of District 9 residents and equate their treatment to people with disabilities.
...r, this movie is lack of depth of storyline. The audiences can even predict what will happen in the next scenes. Moreover, the ending of this movie is too cheesy and irrational according to me. If only they change the ending to become more interesting and rational, I will give a four or five stars out of five. In spite of a lame twist ending, this movie is a perfect example to show that managers should be able to motivate and challenge their employee. It is important to remember that a happy employee means a productive employee.
Interstellar, directed by Christopher Nolan, was a very complex and interesting sci-fi movie. This movie in particular has a lot of factors playing into the movie. Everyone is able to find their favorite part about the movie, and various people can watch this movie and connect with it. This movie came out in 2014, and shocked millions of people by its intense ending. Interstellar was awarded for best visual effects, and then nominated for many other things including, best original score, best sound mixing, and best sound effects which played a huge role in making the movie. The image and sound complement each other, but I thought that image dominated over sound because there were so many silent moments throughout the movie. I thought the plot
