The relationship between Oceola and Mrs. Ellsworth is kind of a mentor and mentee relationship. Mrs. Ellsworth is the mentor and financial manager here, while Oceola is the mentee piano playing artist. The basis of this relationship is their shared genuine love for pure art and music. Mrs. Ellsworth loved beautiful art in all its forms, while Oceola the pianist could deliver beautiful music by playing on the piano. Mrs. Ellsworth appreciation of pure beautiful art made her treat Oceola as her own protegee . Mrs. Ellsworth love of good music made her like and kind of adopt Oceola and her pianist artistic talent. As for Oceola, she kind of distrusted Mrs. Ellsworth in the beginning but grew to respect and trust her later on. Oceola the black talented pianist could deliver good piano music, while Mrs. Ellsworth did not mind spending her money to finance and support an African-American piano artist.

This story is appearing in The Ways of White Folks collection and it contributes to this project by showing how the white folks in that era were starting to participate in what was called “the white response patronage” at that time.
The white folks were providing financial support for the black artist at this era of 1920s. The white folks celebrated and supported black artists, and also supported clubs. The white folks started adopting a new response to the african-american artist which was called the “responses to New Negro” period. The famous Harlem renaissance of the time started attracting these white folks to go to Harlem a predominantly black neighborhood to watch black artistic performances, arts, and entertainments. This white response patronage of financial support was marked with a patronizing attitude towards the black artists and
performers. The overall message of Hughes’s story is to inform the reader of the ways of the white folks era. He communicated to the readers how the white response patronage evolved in the 1920s era. He was trying to show to the reader that the culture has changed and white folks started to get close to black artists and performers. Hughes message was to encourage black artists to celebrate their African-American culture and heritage. Hughes pride of culture and heritage was always celebrated through his poetry and writings. Hughes believed that an African-american artist, needs to be celebrated for being an African-american artist. Hughes assertion of racial pride started in the Harlem renaissance where he wrote in his poetry “I too is American, I am just as American as you are”. In “The Blues I’m Playing” according to Oceola, “the cultured negroes were always saying art would break color lines, and art could save the race and prevent lynchings!”. Even females in this Harlem renaissance era were just as confident and as proud of their art, culture, and African American heritage as the males were. This story is also showing us how Oceola’s strength of character made her stand up for her love to Pete and not follow Mrs. Ellsworth desires and instructions. Mrs. Ellsworth patronage and financial support could not lure Oceola and make her sacrifice her love for Pete to fulfill Mrs. Ellsworth patronizing wishes. The discussion question about this reading is: How successful were the people of this era in implementing the new changes in their society? How long did this renaissance period last? And how much cultural changes were they able to impose on their society?
The Harlem Renaissance is a term used to describe the expansion and development of African American culture and history, particularly in Harlem. It is believed to have started around 1919, after World War I, and ended around the time of the great depression. During this time period African Americans writers, artists, musicians, and poets all gathered in Harlem and created a center for African American culture.
Between 1910 and 1930, Harlem began thriving with African- American arts such as literature, theatre and painting, and music. This era was soon known as the Harlem Renaissance. During this time racial pride became a very big thing among African- American artists, but the only problem was how to best show this pride. Both high art and folk art can give a good expression of racial pride.
After reading the slavery accounts of Olaudah Equiano 's "The Life of Olaudah Equiano" and Harriet Jacobs ' "Incidents In the Life of a Slave Girl", you gain knowledge of what slaves endured during their times of slavery. To build their audience aware of what life of a slave was like, both authors gives their interpretation from two different perspectives and by two different eras of slavery.

The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement of blacks that helped changed their identity. Creative expression flourished because it was the only chance blacks had to express themselves in any way and be taken seriously. World War I and the need for workers up North were a few pull factors for the migration and eventually the Renaissance. A push was the growing discrimination and danger blacks were being faced with in the southern cities. When blacks migrated they saw the opportunity to express themselves in ways they hadn’t been able to do down south. While the Harlem Renaissance taught blacks about their heritage and whites the heritage of others, there were also negative effects. The blacks up North were having the time of their lives, being mostly free from discrimination and racism but down South the KKK was at its peak and blacks that didn’t have the opportunities to migrate experienced fatal hatred and discrimination.
During and after World War One , the Great Migration caused many African Americans to move from rural areas of the country to the northern states. Many people flocked to Harlem, New York in hopes that they too would become a part of the culture phenomenon taking place. This culture boom became known as The Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was an intellectual and literary period of growth promoting a new African American cultural identity in the United States. The decade between 1920 and 1930 was an extremely influential span of time for the Black culture. During these years Blacks were able to come together and form a united group that expressed a desire for enlightenment. This renaissance allowed Blacks to have a uniform voice in a society based upon intellectual growth. The front-runners of this revival were extremely focused on cultural growth through means of intellect, literature, art and music. By using these means of growth, they hoped to destroy the pervading racism and stereotypes suffocating the African American society and yearned for racial and social integration. Many Black writers spoke out during this span of time with books proving their natural humanity and desire for equality.
The Harlem Renaissance, originally known as “the New Negro Movement”, was a cultural, social, and artistic movement during the 1920’s that took place in Harlem. This movement occurred after the World War I and drew in many African Americans who wanted to escape from the South to the North where they could freely express their artistic abilities. During the 1920’s, many black writers, singers, musicians, artists, and poets gained success including Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Marcus Garvey, and W.E.B. Du Bois. This essay will examine what was new about the new negro from 1920-1936. During the years 1920-1936 African Americans began to rebrand themselves and change their image. However, the Renaissance was imprisoned by its flaws. Rather than celebrating the unique culture of African-American’s, it oftentimes caters to what the White Americans would want to see and hear.
In the play “Hamlet,” Gertrude and Ophelia share similarities and they are also contrasting characters. Gertrude, the mother of Hamlet, is a loving, honorable, protective mother. Ophelia, Hamlet’s love interest, is young, foolish, and underestimated. One of the main stances, to which they both contrast, is their love for Hamlet.
