I am applying for the 2017 Ocean Science Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program. I am interested in the program due to the amount of additional knowledge I can gain from being around some of the top minds in the marine industry. I have developed a fascination for underwater robotics and their practical applications in the industry and I have been involving myself in the as many aspects of the field as I can at Northwestern Michigan College where I am currently enrolled in their Bachelor of Science, Marine Technology program. I have worked with the ROVs that Northwestern Michigan College has acquired and it has only fueled my admiration of the technology that goes into them. Along with ROVs, I have also worked with; multibeam, side scan, and profiling sonar systems, and I am amazed at the capabilities they have. When these systems are implemented they allow us a new and better understanding of the world below our lakes and oceans.
I have worked several hours on NMC’s research vessel the Northwestern and have worked through problems and issues that arose with the

I had a hard time picking 3 mentors from the list that REU selected all of the mentors have done amazing research in their fields respectively; and to narrow them all down to 3 people took me the majority of the time I spent working on this application. The mentor list opened my eyes to even more fields that I did not know were part of the marine industry. Marine biology has always been on my mind as a possible field of interest, though I have not taken any courses relating to the field. I would like to work with what I am currently knowledgeable in, the integration of new technology to ROVs and
Seaworld is a giant marine life theme park. The greatest attraction to these many theme park would be those killer whales. In fact, these killer whales are the face of the park. As gigant as these mammals are, seaworld is keeping them in some pretty tight quarters. Mr. Jett and Mr.Ventre says “Wild killer whales can swim a hundred miles daily as they socialize, forage, communicate, and breed. In stark contrast, with little horizontal or vertical space in their enclosures, captive orcas swim only limited distances, with most spending many hours surface resting.” The animals don't have the freedom they need. Also when taking the whales out of their natural habit the whales tend to be depressed and not as heath in that situation. They need their freedom in the big ocean blue. Bring them into the small living units, breeding whales in captivity all for the entertainment of humans. At young ages the calves are taken away from their mothers on to a new seaworld park. Mothers of the calves have even been seen denying their offspring.
...t was not for these precursors then the continuation of unrestricted submarine warfare might still be a threat to the vessels that now transport hundreds of thousands of people all over the globe.

The aircraft needs to use two beams to ensure that the pulses return to the aircraft. In certain situations the pulse may not return to the aircraft due to flat glassy water surface (because of the law of reflection) . The Lads software automatically compiles arrival times and fixes errors in the data like tidal variations. Maps can be made after data is compiled from the aircraft by using Global Positioning Satellites, which constructs coordinates and data collected.

As an Earth and Oceanographic Science major at Bowdoin College, the courses offered at Bowdoin are more generalized for all earth systems such as rock processes, surface processes, and ocean processes. I want a more intense study of ocean processes, like the carbon cycle and biological pump. I am very interested the field experience I could gain on a tall ship. This is
With few exceptions today’s weather tracking technology is only continuing to evolve. The use of satellites allows for accurate readings and predictions of upcoming weather events. These findings in conjunction with such inventions as the Marine VHF radio which can send for help at a maximum range of 60 nautical miles help warn the crew of impending doom before the storm hits. Though many ships have been destroyed by storms in the past, today’s technology is humanity 's solution against the relentless forces of
Review: The opportunity and endeavor of exploring the Earth’s oceans can reap great rewards for mankind and unravel many of the mysteries that the Earth has left to discover.
The Ocean Sea novel by Alesandro Baricco is a unique novel of several people who have different identities, goals and functions. All of the characters have somehow ended up in the Almayer Inn. The Ocean Sea defines all of the people in their identities, goals and functions except one unseen, but felt man who live in the seventh room of the Almayer Inn. Baricco distinguishes the Almayer Inn from other ordinary inns not only by giving some clues of an existing of a spiritual power in the Almayer Inn, but also by its location and its different guests. The Almayer Inn is on the beach and the guests are several people who have nothing in common; they do not share an age neither a goal. However, there is a mysterious man who live in the seventh room of the Almayer Inn and believed to be playing a significant part of all of the other people in the novel. In the end of the novel, the mysterious man leaves his room and disappears. Analyzing the facts that the children “the hosts” and the mysterious man were in the Almayer Inn first and leave last, children read their guests’ minds, act like
The navy adopted the technology for use by submarines to detect objects in the water.
What do the scientists plan to do to measure Ocean Acidification on this cruise? Scientists plan to measure ocean acidification on this cruise by equipping each mooring line with a ‘CTD’ that measures the water’s conductivity (salinity), temperature, and depth (pressure). In addition to measuring these tracers, each line is equipped with current meters (RCM-8 and ADCPs) that determine both themagnitude and direction of the water flow. Continuous measurements of current velocities, temperature and salinity supply the information needed to construct an annual budget for heat and salt transport through the Strait.
