Meta Description: Studies have shown that car crashes are more likely to occur after daylight savings time. This article will outline why this occurs.
Experts have warned that daylight saving's time is bad for one's health. People have debated about whether we should continue the practice of moving time forward and backwards. Proponents of this argue that daylights savings time helps reduce electricity. People who are opposed to daylights savings time have stated that this practice disrupt's people's sleep schedules.
Regardless of whether one is for or against daylights savings time, studies have shown that car accidents are more common the Monday after daylight savings time. Sam Schwartz is a former NYC traffic commissioner. He now works
The number of traffic accidents is likely to increase due to an earlier sunset as well as the sleep disruptions that are commonly associated with Daylight Saving Time.
Traffic is caused by multiple reasons including accidents on the road, commuters traveling at the same time, bad weather, and construction activity. If we do not do something about the traffic problem now, finding workable solutions in the future will become very difficult. Some solutions are to increase the amount of roads or decrease the amount of cars, building an alternative freeway, government incentives for carpooling, or even restrictions against a certain amount of cars in one household. If even friends and family enforce these solutions, traffic may decrease. There are other options such a change in the days considered weekends. For most people, the weekend is Saturday and Sunday, but what if there was an option to change those days? If there were two certain days during the week as some peoples’ weekends instead, there would be fewer cars on the road on certain days. For example, you may get the option of having your weekend on Wednesday and Thursday instead of Saturday and Sunday. If this idea works out, this could reduce the amount of cars and traffic on the road. Another
Ben Hogan, a famous golfer, once said, “ the only thing a golfer needs is more daylight”. Daylight saving time not only impacts the world’s golf games, it also affects the economy, outdoor activities and comes with many health concerns.Daylight saving time(also know as DST) was used as a way to save energy and have more natural light in the summertime, but it was as affected and it also came with many consequences to the countries and states that still use this time. It was first used in the USA in 1918 and has been on and off for many years , but now DST is used seven months out of the year. There are two times during the year we change the clocks. The first Sunday in March, we “spring forward” with the clocks and the second Sunday in November we “fall back” one hour. However, daylight-saving time should be abolished from the rest of the world that uses this time throughout the year.
Many opinions come along with Daylight Saving Time due to the possible consequences that result of it. DST is said to increase 3 times the risk of car accidents towards pedestrians (Douma). According to Michael Douma, “Recent research indicates that pedestrian fatalities from cars soar at 6:00pm during the weeks after clocks are set back in the fall.” However the early daylight in the winter helps the younger pedestrians like children and teens see their way to school in the mornings safely. DST is also to be said to bring health problems to society such as depression. The lack of daylight has put 8 percent of people in a sad state of mind as the sun sets early in the winter (Scudellari). This switch also is said to affect those with sleeping problems like
Likewise, humans function on circadian rhythms like many animals. “Our bodies are verified to have a regulatory mechanism to adjust the circadian rhythm” (Guo 2013). They perform daily activities like work during the day and rest/sleep at night. But there are some people who perform oppositely. They tend to sleep/rest during the day and work at night. These people tend to have some sleeping disorders due to their circadian rhythms being shifted. Until they readjust circadian rhythms they will continue to have sleep problems and impaired performance while being awake.
Daylight savings time has been something that individuals born post World War I have always had implemented in their lives. Many people never really consider the point of daylight savings time until it rolls around twice a year nor do they realize the original purpose. There are approximately 70 countries out of 196 that observe daylight savings time, at least in a portion of the country. Daylight savings time has had many changes throughout the history of it, but is it time to move on? Although there may be advantages such as more natural light, but disadvantages such as the disruptions with our circadian rhythms outweigh the advantages.
...ore, during, and after the Daylight Saving Time period of 1991 and 1992. They blamed this percentage jump to the lost hour of sleep. We could blame this on many things, but regardless of the reason, there is no denying that changing out clocks has a significant cost in human lives.
Daylight saving time has been around for almost as long as advanced civilizations have been here, all for the sole reason that people tend to rise with the sun. The body’s natural response is to awaken with the sun, many people view this as a biological clock. With new technology, and an abundance of artificial lighting, many people wonder that if loosing an hour of sleep is still needed? Clearly this is a question that has been asked by many people, including myself, no one likes to wake up in the dark, and lose an hour of sleep. Daylight saving time can cause confusion, accidents, negative psychological effects, and general discomfort. Though it previously made sense to adjust the clocks twice a year, I believe, it is now not necessary to have daylight saving time.
Drivers that take road trips and drivers happen to work late night shifts are the tops contributors to sleep related car crashes. People that plan on driving for long periods of time should stop once they feel too tired and get a hotel room.
There are many people that drive in this world. In this day and age it's kind of a necessity to be able to drive. People generally need to drive to work on a very regular basis, usually five days a week. This means that there is a lot of different things happening, both good and bad, that create many statistics. I will be discussing some of those statistics today. There are definitely many different statistics I could discuss with you. Just a few of them are distracted driving statistics, teen driving statistics, texting and driving statistics, and even drunk driving statistics. There are even more I could list off, but that would be a very long list.

A resource from Harvard Medical School states that our internal clock is regulated by light. There are cells in our eyes that detect light and tell our brain when it is nighttime or daytime, this way we know when to sleep. But since the invention of the light bulb, we are exposed to light later in the day when there is usually no light. Because of this, our eyes tell us the time is earlier than it actually is, so our bodies want to prefer later sleeping times. So the light causes our internal clock to reset, and makes us prefer different sleeping times.
ways. The use of electricity will reduces the usage of the earth’s resources such as gas and oil.
Doctors have been saying for years that you should not stay up late, or not to sleep in during the day. Doing these things can lead to dementia, heart disease, and early death. One part of sleep is actually found to be more important.
Lack of sleep may cause an accident. As you get drowsy, your reaction becomes slow as much as driving drunk.
