Introduction
Occupational therapy is a form of therapy for those recuperating from physical or mental illness that encourages rehabilitation through the performance of activities required of daily life (O’Brien & Hussey, 2012; American Occupational Therapy Association [AOTA], 2014). The goal of OT intervention is to increase the ability of the client to engage in everyday activities, for example, feeding, dressing, bathing, leisure, work, education (O’Brien & Hussey, 2012; & AOTA, 2014).
The Mental Health Act (MHA) is the law which sets out when you can be admitted, detained, and treated in hospitals against your wishes. It is also known as being ‘sectioned’ (Institute of psychiatry, psychology, & neuroscience, 2014). For this to happen, certain …show more content…

There is a difference between the OT intervention practice and receiving help from a psychologist from rehab. This can cause aggressive behavior and irresponsible conduct. The danger to either the OT practitioner or the client will need back up and ask for help from other practitioners in case anything dramatic happens. They come together as a team to treat the client (Harvey, 2010).
Another negative is that this new legislation gives patients relatives the right to take out the patient when they choose to and can replace him or her of their choosing. The nearest relative has discharged the patient without due regard for the individuals or the public’s safety. (Harvey, 2010) A patient should get their complete intervention and complete treatment while being treated with mental or behavioral health to recover. If by any means, they get discharged by a relative without receiving full treatment it can affect the patient twice as much. (Harvey, …show more content…
