International students battle with several different obstacles in the process of moving to the United States to seek a better education. The number of international students studying in the United States, as of today, is 975,000 (Turner). Many international students have the desire to study in the land of opportunities for its quality of education, which allows them to obtain a respectable degree in their choice of major. Kwon Yangyi, a college student, did a study regarding international students and some of the factors that affects them. One interesting conclusion from Kwon’s study was that female international students were more subject to homesickness, isolation, and loneliness. This is understandable as females tend to be more family oriented than males. Moving to a foreign country where you might not know anyone, may put these international students in a state of depression due to being away from family. This realization that you have to form a new life in a different country away from your love ones can add to the depression. Staying in contact with family is important for international students. Maintaining communication with their love ones will help them to feel less lonely in a new place where they may not know anyone. Finding things to do that they enjoy can also help them feel more at home. Additionally, keeping a positive mindset will help these international students adapt faster to their new environment by helping them to start focusing on the positive aspects of moving to the United States. Many international students come from countries where their morals and values differ from that of American morals and values. Before this point, children are not able to pick up a second language as quickly as older children or adults” (Elsworth). Having that language barrier can cause frustration among students. For instance a foreign student may misinterpret what another person is saying to which could possibly have a negative impact on the new student. Language is very important when attempting to get to know someone. It allows us to help each other and learn from one another. Matthew Murrie, an English Instructor at Westminster College, points out how in college most interactions happen outside of the classrooms. Most international students are afraid to approach other students, which makes it hard for them to find new people to interact with (Hopkins). Students from all over the world notice a difficulty in dealing with the Americans and mentally understand them. Therefore, Rebekah Nathan argues that in her article “As Other See Us” and discusses the differences between the American and the international students. Moreover, she uses different evidence based on students from different backgrounds and cultures. Nathan goes over opinions and stories that happens with the international students in the US and what they think about these situation, which they considers weird in the eyes of the international students.
Upon arriving to college, many students face the challenge of finding a community to belong to. I believe the student affairs professionals on campus are the resource to building communities within the student body. Reflecting back on my first semester of college, I found my community within two organizations; Dance Marathon and UI Alumni Association Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (S.T.A.T.). Within the organizations I met two advisers who opened my eyes to the world of student affairs.
Recent years have witnessed more and more international students study in the United States. From my personal experience as an international student, I recognized the differences in culture between the international students and the American students. Likewise, a Rebekah Nathan’s chapter, “As Others See Us,” demonstrates that how an international student as minorities see American students. Nathan, a professor who goes undercover as a student in her university, conducts an ethnographic study to examine the interaction between American students and international students. Nathan shows how international students have problems with American students because American students tend to form superficial relationship. This is because American students do not express the close relationship within family and friends. Moreover, international students have a difficult time making friends because American only seems care about themselves, they do not seem to care about the rest of the world. Nathan claims that international students usually stay within their own ethnic group is valid. However, Nathan claims that Americans do not make the effort to make friends with international
Causes of depression in international students revolve around the number of friends one has, financial difficulties, language barriers, academic difficulties, perceived discrimination and cultural shock.
Weighing the contribution international students give and the value it adds to their life by allowing them to work in United States, there is every reason to grant them the right. Under good regulation and monitoring channels it can be a very effective strategy to integrate in all institutions of learning that is of importance to the government, beneficial to individuals and society.

In the last few years, studying abroad has become an increasingly popular choice for higher education among international students (Accessibility Navigation, 2014). An average of 10% of students in universities all across the UK are international students from countries all over the world. (Accessibility Navigation, 2014). Although the experience is different for each individual student, there are many common problems that international students face. Those problems include: culture shock to varying degrees coupled with emotional issues(Bailey, 2005), Language barriers along with other communication problems (Sherry et al, 2009), and academic problems due to a change in school curriculum (Ramachandran, 2011). This essay will expand on the common problems faced by international students in the UK, offer solutions for handling the problems, and making the process of acclimating to a new environment easier for students.
Coming to the United States for college can introduce cultural differences that even the most prepared students might not anticipate. From campus life to classroom etiquette, US school can be quite a different experience from learning in other countries around the world. It is rather natural for students from other countries to join communities that somehow remind them of home and give them the opportunity to remain connected with their roots and at the same time bring the world a little closer to fellow classmates. By raising collective cultural awareness, organized expressions of diversity which create a cultural spillover from which we all benefit.
In addition to spending more on the actual education and university fees, the international students also have to spend on boarding and food. Finding a place to stay that is conveniently near to the university and other places of interaction, is affordable, accepts immigrants, and suits the basic requirements - is hard, sometimes impossible. A compromise on at least one criterion of the above is required to sustain in the new country.
Going to study in a new country can be a stressful experience, from learning the culture norms to new foods. Culture shock is common with international students. Culture shock can include, meeting new people, language barriers, social behaviors, and a sense of community. A students comfortability with the culture of their new home can determine their learning experience. It can be an emotional rollercoaster, being so far away from family and friends. American culture is difficult to understand. International students find Americans to be confusing. Social norms vary depending on the part of the country a person is in.
Language is the main way to communicate with others, and when a foreigner comes to a new country, the communication is the major thing he has to deal with. According to the text, “the first is so obvious it hardly needs mentioning-language. Vocabulary, syntax, idioms, slang, dialects, and so on, all cause difficulties, but the person struggling with a different language is at least aware when he is in this kind of trouble” (p. 69). Language is an obvious blockade in a cross-culture communication, because of the different grammar, words, slang, and so on. If a person knew the language of that country, at least he could know when he is in the trouble and what kind of the trouble, and I perceive this as the most important thing, to be able to understand. The difficulty of learning a language, is not only know the vocabulary and syntax, but the actual meaning of the sentences.
