Social networking websites, such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter, have blown up immensely in just a short span of about 5 years; most people nowadays have found that these and other social networking sites have become a “necessity” in their lives and must constantly be checking in on them. Social networking sites such as the ones mentioned above allow anyone to make new friends, reconnect with old ones, and blog just about anything under the sun. For that and many other reasons it is not unusual nowadays to hear people talk about their status updates, picture uploads and the friends they have made on social networking sites on a regular basis. In reality, what they are going through is called the “obsessive factor” (“Are SNS Good for our Society?”). The obsessive factor is a condition where a person who is logged in to a social networking site cannot seem to log off, even though they claimed they would just update their status, or upload a few pictures. A great number of people on social networking sites today display this symptom. Spending an excessive amount of time online comes with other problems. Face-to-face interaction with other people decreases significantly, possibly leading into a state of isolation, which has been proved to happen to some people. It has also been found that teens now spend an average of nine hours per week on social networking sites, which is a considerably large amount of time to be sitting in front of a computer (“Are SNS Good for our Society?”). Not only is a large amount of time spent on the computer, but healthy eating habits, exercise and overall health are thrown out the window since people spend so much time sitting in front of a computer. They become too lazy to go exercise or would rather go out to get some fast food, as opposed to a nice healthy homemade meal. Although some people may still find time to do so, others do not. Those problems, however, are not the only ones that come with social networking addiction.
The use of social networking sites is rising at great rates. According to a report conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in 2012, ninety-five percent of individuals aged 12-17 use the internet; and eighty-one percent of those use social network sites (Pew Interest). Although it is known that social media can have a useful impact on lives, often times people forget that with a positive comes a negative. The continual use of social network sites will impact teen lives more negatively than positively because they can cause huge distractions from valuable and critical pursuits like education; they can also cause mental health issues and a reduction in communication skills.
Believe it or not social media sites can make a person an addict. For example, a person checks their Facebook, or twitter page every five to ten minutes. This can be very time consuming because of the time that is being used to check them, which could be used for something else.

Karrie Lager, a child psychologist practicing in Los Angeles, says. “However, excessive internet use can have serious negative consequences,” she explains in response to a survey published by CASA Columbia (Stein, 2014). Dr. Lager has a great point, she believes that the use of technology for communication is a great thing for children, but she also agrees that using it to excess can be harmful and dangerous to a child. A lot of children, as well as adults use social media as fuel to their self-esteem and their self-worth, by doing so they become addicted wanting to use it more and more to never feel less than they should. Unfortunately because of this the addictive tendencies are becoming more apparent “Social media is simply providing a quicker peeling of the onion, however in most cases the problems were already there,” Dr. Sophy says, “Many people are genetically predisposed to use excessive amounts of potentially harmful tools (sex, substances, food, social media, etc.) to self soothe. And yet there are others who learn these behaviors due to life circumstances and events” (Stein, 2014). As you look closer to the problem one can understand that there are beneficial factors to social media but they can also see that there are factors that are harmful. If children are using social media more and more there is naturally going to be
Today’s society revolves around social media and impacts each person in a different way. The occurrence of giving and receiving “likes” and the desire of today’s teens to increase views, shares, comments, and likes are not only helping improve someone’s profile, but also of the brands that they like. As companies observe the data collected, the social media marketers work together to carefully turn “likes” into profit for the brand. People have no idea what the value of liking something is. The more teens that utilize social media, the more money companies are likely to make.
