Obsession has always been a good thing in society eyes, and people look at it as one of the major keys to success. Most People think Being obsessed with something is always representative of people passion, beliefs, and ego. The great writer, Mark Barrowcliff, once said: “An obsession is a way for damage people to damage themselves more” (Barrowclif). Director, Christopher Nolan, has the same point of view on obsession as Mark Barrowcliff. Nolan started making short movies at the age of seven and made his first movie, called Memento (2000) at the age of 30 (IMDB, Biography). Nolan shows the obsession of the main characters in his movies by showing how they put their job before their family. In the movie The Prestige, Alfred is a character who loves his daughter and wife, but he still keeps secrets from them. At (1:17:52, The Prestige) Alfred, Freddy, and Olivia his assistant are joining Sarah, Alfred's wife at a restaurant. Alfred is acting unusual and is trying to seem normal. Sarah asks him what is wrong and he tells her that he lost something valuable. When Sarah asks him that what it is, he refuses to answer so she says “I see, more secrets” and Alfred answers “ Sarah, secrets are my life.” As a magician, secrets are Alfred’s life so he refuses to share any secreted that are job-related with his wife because he thinks that no one should know his illusions and what he is doing. He is sacrificing his relationship with his wife for secrets, and that reveals his obsession with his job and the negative impacts that it has on his life. Robert Angier travelled to America to meet Tesla and asked him to make him a machine for his illusion called transported man. At (1:24:00, The Prestige) Angier go to Tesla to see the machine that he made him. The machine has a signature look but when they try to run it, it doesn't work quite as they wanted to. It turns out the machine works as a replicator. The special effects were used to visually describe Tesla’s machine and how it works. When the machine is turned on, you can see the electricity that is going through the machine, and it makes the machine look expensive and shows how much money Angier spent on this machine. He spent money and waited for almost a year just so he can do one
