Compared to the older students I observed, much less time was spent on homework in this household. The only assignment was to review sight words. He struggled with this in the beginning of the year, because 50 words at once was too much for him at once. His mother started showing him just 10 a day and gradually building to the 50 within a week. She now adds two to three each day and he has begun to excel. The student has difficulty sitting still while doing homework, and during most tasks the mother tells me. He hops from one side of the sofa to the other, at one point spinning on the floor. Before leaving I thank the student for allowing me to observe and tell him how smart he is to know so many sight words and be getting so close to reading on his own. He tells me he can count to 100, and demonstrates before I leave. The mother tells me the requirement for the end of the year is to be able to count to 20, and he is already at 100. She explains that he loves all things Math, and is always excited to show off what he has

For less than two hours, I observed the grandson of a visitor at my aunt’s home.
Another rather consistent observation I saw was the indication that most children used their parent as a secure base. A secure base is provided through a relationship that harbors one or more responsive caregivers who meets the child’s needs and to whom the child can turn to as a safe haven, when upset or distraught. This relationship can be seen in many of the observations I made. The one that stands out the most and that clearly depicts how a child uses a secure base is Susy. Susy used her parents as secure base when she was frightened by the boy that was older than her and whom she didn’t know. She ran to her parents for protection and comfort from the stranger. Another clear depiction of a secure base was when Susy demonstrated separation

Hopefully as he keeps doing the activities he likes he will be rewarded, however as mother letting my child know that I’m also proud of him should be a priority. This can be turn to letting the kid know that he should be proud of what he is doing himself. And that if he is not proud that he shouldn’t continue. Now, it’s a fine line between giving up because its hard, than letting go because it’s not valuable. Therefore persistence need to be in the picture in order to truly know which one it is.

His attitude about school work is far from acceptable. He doesn’t care about any school work, or homework his teacher assigns. If he can’t finish it in the hour of allotted time given to him in the class, then he will simply not do it. He shows seemingly no care in his grades. He celebrates C’s and is okay with D’s. Many of the teachers believe he has a hidden intelligence that no one knows about. He just doesn’t have the desire to show it.
